These clients enjoy cooking and entertaining, so their vision was to open and connect three separate rooms—the kitchen, sitting, and formal dining rooms—to create a single open and modern space where everyone could engage and participate in the activities. Opening these spaces required complex structural engineering. The wall removals required supporting the loads from the second floor and meeting the engineering requirements for shear wall and lateral support. These beams and their connections to the posts they sit on were a challenge to install because of the complex nature of the home's original framed. All these loads had to be carried through the finished basement below and rest on new footings below the basement floor. The center kitchen island was expansive, with a single slab countertop that would provide both workspace and counter seating. This slab, at 64x120 and 789 lbs., required careful planning for on-site labor, transfer routing, and precision installation. Natural daylight now floods the space from all directions. Recessed can lighting runs throughout the space, all on dimmers for maximum control of ambiance. The Better Builders design team guided the selection of hardwoods, staircase details, cabinetry, countertops, tile, and color. The muted palette and clean lines work well with our couple’s eclectic furnishings and artworks. Now, traffic and activities flow better, and every inch of the previously divided space is utilized and enjoyed. The outcome is exactly as our homeowners envisioned…and as we intended.

The charming nonchalance of a luxury kitchen With floor-to-ceiling front windows and seamless (also in terms of material) transitions from the patio, you can move almost imperceptibly from the water to the bar kitchen to collect freshly made salads, dishes, and cocktails – the kitchen effectively only differing from the surrounding nature in its geometry. Such a “natural” way of planning a luxury kitchen is not always possible. But here, the architectural design emphatically considered nature. Does nature know handles, bright colors, and dark walls? Precisely. The result: the lines of the fronts are all the more elegant, the wood looks all the more beautiful, and the rhythmics of the table surfaces and the play of sand-colored serenity and swinging shades all the more lively.

The Rock Cottage sits atop a rocky lakeside cleft in the eastern Ontario township of Rideau Lakes. Six small cabins previously occupied the site which was largely preserved in its naturalized state and used as a recreational fishing retreat. The concept of a ‘grouping of cabins’ became a guiding principal for the design of the cottage. The use of natural materials was a response to a desire to make the cottage feel like it was an extension of the surrounding natural elements while keeping true to the essence of place. The palette consists of wood, stone, polished concrete, metal and glass.

This Edgemont site offered a good slope for capturing water coming off the house and planting it into the landscape — before it ever reached the road or the drainage ditch. The resident, a passionate plant person, helped guide the vision, and has taken loving care of it ever since, helping it grow into the example it is today. The intent was a low, meadow-like feel, with spent flower seed heads left standing through winter for texture, food, and habitat.

A swooping charcoal-gray stone wall tells the story of this modern home in one gentle but generous gesture. Enveloping trees, entry, living room, and vistas all at once separates the main wing for two from an in-law suite and carefully guides this ensemble around a set of mature tress. Lightly placing this house on a heavily wooded Charlotte, NC site while keeping the natural setting intact, paired with concerns of privacy, sunlight, and views of nature has made the initial design phase especially fun and challenging.
