MLB Design Group"I want a big island that everybody can gather around," said the client, and that was an important driver for our design development work. The homeowners love to cook and entertain, and often are joined by their two teenage daughters for also enjoy cooking and socializing in this important room.
After considering other options, we decided the best design solution was to add space to the kitchen. Basically we added the "missing corner" to the existing L-shaped space to create the room you see. The doorway to the dining room was enlarged - and the hardwoods extended and refinished - to tie these rooms together visually and functionally. Now guests and family can be in the dining room, but still part of the kitchen activities. A new folding glass door at the dining room leads out to the deck, so now it's possible to easily circulate from kitchen to deck to dining.
The beam is wrapped in a custom-stained rustic wood meant to blend with the darker cabinet finish. (This beam shows up in the BEFORE picture as a painted thing.) In our renovation, we decided to play up the strong horizontal line of this beam -- we extended that element around the space by adding "non-structural boards" at the top of the surrounding walls. You'll see other "posts and beams" in other views of this room.

Our team worked closely with the client to develop a bespoke design plan that would fulfill their vision for a more innovative and functional kitchen.
One of our major objectives was to create an open-concept floor plan by removing the kitchen and dining room walls. This immediately created a more spacious feel to the room and encouraged greater social interaction between family members. The result is a kitchen that feels both contemporary and inviting.
Our client was particular about the custom look he wanted for his cabinetry. We listened to his specifications and delivered on our promise of a unique cabinet color that complemented the rest of the kitchen design. The effect is striking, and the cabinets now serve as a focal point of the room.
To ensure the kitchen was fully equipped with the latest and most advanced appliances, we specified Wolf appliances. These state-of-the-art appliances are renowned for their functionality, durability, and stylish design. Our client now has access to the latest cooking technology, making meal preparation easier and more enjoyable than ever before!
In order to accentuate the beauty of the kitchen space, we installed teardrop recessed lights and pendant lights above the sink and the peninsula. These elegant fixtures not only provide ample lighting, but also add a touch of sophistication to the kitchen.
Rather than refinishing the floors, we opted to install new prefinished wood floors in an espresso color. This choice adds depth to the room and creates a cozy ambiance ideal for spending time with loved ones.

RD Design Team & Architectural ConsultantsThe Courtyard House is a ground-up infill project, designed, developed and built by RD Design Team in the Longview West neighborhood of Central Phoenix. The house is 1,898 square feet with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and a conditioned garage that doubles as a bar and social area.
The main design inspiration behind this project is the interior courtyard inspired by the haciendas of Mexico. We designed the house around not one, but two interior courtyards. The kitchen opens up to the main courtyard with a wall of glass and huge transparent patio doors that allow for the indoor/outdoor lifestyle so appropriate to the climate in Phoenix. The second interior courtyard is an open space between the house and the exterior garage space, which we converted to a space for people, not cars. The back courtyard acts as an accessory space to the converted garage, making for another versatile indoor/outdoor gathering space.
Another design motif of the project was creating a special approach to the house. We choreographed a sensual procession from the street to the front door starting with a long concrete bridge over a drainage basin that lights up at night. An entry courtyard with a metal trellis flanked by a perforated wall welcomes visitors and creates a special threshold space filled with dancing shadows. A fountain hidden behind a wall adds to the sensual experience of the approach with the refreshing sound of a steady waterfall. When you open the front door, you stand on an open grate that spans the drainage basin and are greeted by the bright and open space of the living room and kitchen. Further inside, you cross a second transparent bridge at the entrance of the master bedroom, which gives a delightful glimpse of the desert floor below. Throughout the ultra modern house, you see materials appropriate to the desert Southwest, including a sealed wood fence, rusted metal detailing, and a rusted metal stair that leads to a roof terrace above the converted garage.

VA RenderingsProject Overview: The Backyard Renovation 3D Rendering project was developed to visually communicate the design intent and vision for a residential outdoor space. The project aimed to provide clear and engaging representations for both the contractor and the homeowner's association, facilitating a shared understanding of the proposed enhancements.
Key Features:
1. New Driveway with Automatic Gates: The design features a contemporary driveway equipped with automated gates, providing convenience and improved security for the property.
2. Exercise Gym with Yoga Area: A dedicated space for fitness activities that includes both a traditional exercise gym and a serene yoga area, encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle.
3. Coffee Station with Juice Bar: This inviting area is designed for relaxation and socialization, featuring a coffee station complemented by a juice bar to enhance outdoor entertaining.
4. Secluded Meditation Space: A tranquil retreat is included, featuring a soothing wall fountain, cold plunge, and sauna, all surrounded by lush tropical vegetation to create an oasis for relaxation and mindfulness.

Studio H2OPool and backyard landscaping are the only previous features that remained from the original home, minus a few walls on the interior and newly installed waterless grass for the ground cover.

Designed with a standing seam metal roof, with internal drainage system for hidden gutters design. Rain chain and rain barrels for rain harvesting.
Retrofitted with Hardy Frames prefabricated shear walls for up to date earthquake safety. Opening both walls to the backyard, there are now two 14' folding doors allowing the inside and outside to merge.
