The doors from Kokeena were a particularly inspired choice. Beth and her spouse started designing their kitchen before IKEA released their new SEKTION line. They were a little let down when they previewed the new IKEA kitchen line in the store. The cabinet doors and drawer fronts seemed cheap to them. In fact, they “felt like molded plastic.” Beth emailed her dedicated IKD designer, Ana, and said, “I can’t do those doors!” Of Ana’s 2 suggestions, Beth and her spouse chose Kokeena’s Modern English Shaker-style door fronts which felt more solid than IKEA’s choices yet were still less expensive than custom doors. IKEA door handles helped keep the cost low. A friend suggested mounting the handles in the middle of the doors rather than along the top, for a more modern feel.

The client had Oak cabinets, circa 1990 with a raised panel cathedral arch style of door. The cabinets were refinished in a dark stain 5 years ago, which was done professionally. Unfortunately, the finish did not last and was peeling and flaking in numerous locations on the doors and cabinetry. The owners chose to have their existing cabinets refaced with Maple plywood veneer in a CC Café stain. The matching color solid maple doors selected were in a shaker style with a beveled edge detail; the drawer fronts were a solid maple slab type. New base shoe moldings were also added to complete the project. New Blum hinges were installed using Blumotion soft-close hinges. Amerock Antique Silver pulls were chosen to compliment the cabinet refacing project.

Starting its life as a dark, walled in space with inadequate cabinetry and multiple awkward components, I knew the only way forward with this penthouse kitchen, was for it to undergo a complete rebuild. The clients were hoping to welcome a child in the years following this renovation, however they love to entertain so also wanted a modern and sophisticated kitchen. Therefore, the task became marrying functional indestructibility with clean, elevated design, resulting in a timeless, architecturally forward kitchen with sensible storage and innovated finishes. The first and most important task when addressing the modernization of this kitchen, was to remove the existing walls that closed off the space. Accomplishing this allowed for a more free-flowing feel and opened the sightline to the rest of the unit. This also invited the opportunity for a new, more welcoming floor plan including the addition of a large island with ample counter space and optional eat-in functionality. In order to maximize functional efficiency and overall aesthetic value, I knew the plumbing required substantial relocation. However, with concrete ceilings and floors, combined with a strata unwilling to allow trenching of the slab, moving the plumbing to the most effective location was no easy feat. Ultimately, I was able to accomplish this by creating a hidden channel inside the cabinetry that allowed the plumbing to be redirected to the ideal location without visible detection. Creatively, I was inspired by the idea of injecting dimension, by way of juxtaposing materials that wouldn’t necessarily be found together in nature, yet worked harmonious when combined. You’ll notice the cabinet fronts are all made of solid Dekton – a manmade stone that while costly, is nearly indestructible. This created the base in which we inset the countertop, backsplash and surround, all made in a wood-like material. As if a huge ice-cream scoop glided into a slab of solid stone, uncovering beautiful layered depths of wood. I worked with a local company to custom manufacture this is a high impact, one-of-a-kind laminate specifically for this project. It’s nonporous, fingerprint resistant and antimicrobial. It offers a matte finish which has a beautiful hand-feel resembling real wood but because it’s manmade, it’s not subjected to the same expansion and contraction of natural wood, making it an exceptional choice for this application. Final details also include a touchless kitchen faucet, integrated appliances, hidden storage, Italian lighting, delicate Australian hardware and smart switches and plugs.

Presenting a case study of a client located in Nagoya, Japan. This client resides in an 85 square meter, two-bedroom, two-living room residence. The overall style of the house incorporates a blend of Japanese wooden and Nordic modern aesthetics. The client discovered us through a Google search and sought our expertise in recommending and selecting lighting fixtures suitable for their living room and dining area. The client expressed a preference for localized lighting, indicating a high requirement for accentuating specific areas. After reviewing the floor plans and renderings provided by the client, we assisted them in making their choices. Starting with the dining area, which is a separate space occupying approximately 10 square meters, the client has a solid wood dining table measuring 1.8 meters in length. Their preference for warm lighting led us to recommend the PH5 Macaron Pendant Light in a Nordic modern style. This pendant light offers a wide range of color options, and the client personally selected a combination of white and orange, paired with warm light sources. The actual result of this combination is truly remarkable. As the client had additional auxiliary lighting such as light strips installed in the dining area, the pendant light primarily serves the purpose of focusing the light on the food, perfectly meeting the client's requirements. Moving on to the living room, the client also has light strips installed on the ceiling and track lights in place. They expressed a need for a floor lamp beside the sofa to provide localized lighting, as they enjoy reading in the living room. Hence, we selected a unique umbrella-shaped wooden floor lamp that complements the pendant light in the dining area. This choice harmonizes well with the overall style of the dining area, which showcases a Japanese wooden aesthetic. When the client received the products, they expressed their complete satisfaction with how well the lighting fixtures aligned with their needs. Elliot Street is one of our favourite floating stairs to date! This modern art deco staircase was part of a home renovation where the owners were adding a new addition to their Auckland home. It was designed with a steel zig zag balustrade and a wooden walnut handrail over the top of it which was cut and hand shaped on site. This style of metal balustrade is a solidly fabricated steel that is quite a heavy aesthetic, which we at Stairworks have noticed has been the preferred choice over glass this year. The steel single stringer underneath is the structural signature feature of this style of floating stairs. That in addition to the open risers and L shape is not only space saving but also gives a beautifully airy illusion that fits into that modern design. The wooden treads are made of walnut which we really loved working with as it is a very high end timber choice. The owners were able to reduce the cost by choosing to laminate the walnut treads to have the same look and colour. This was done by using pieces of small timber rather than one big chunk. The treads also have anti slip strips of aluminium running along and protruding 1mm off the end of the tread as an added safety feature to stop anyone from slipping down the stairs with socks on. We then hid the fixings of the balustrade with the help of a walnut end cap to cover all the fixings. This floating staircase was quite labour intensive in the installation because we at Stairworks take pride in our finishings meaning everything needs to be done correctly down to the last detail. In the end, both we and the homeowners were very happy with the end result!
