This job was at house in Polwarth, a small parish through which flows the Union Canal, running from Falkirk to Edinburgh. The client had requested a clean for a Victorian tiled hallway set in the narrow reception area of the house. The tiled floor had been painted over by the previous owners of the house using a thick, red paint. Painting a tile floor in such a way can affect its wash-ability, and the paint can peel off over time especially in a high-traffic area such as a reception area or hallway such as this. The red paint would have to be removed in order to restore the tile underneath and reveal its natural state, as well as provide a thorough and much-needed clean. The first step in the paint removal process was to spray the floor with a strong solution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean mixed with Remove & Go. Pro-Clean is a heavy duty cleaner and degreaser, suitable for use on tile, stone and grout. Pro-Clean combines well with Remove and Go, which is a multi-purpose stripper capable of removing most sealers, adhesives and, particularly important for this case, paint. The solution was left to dwell after application to allow it to soak into the tile and soften the paint and dirt. After 10 to 15 minutes we scrubbed the floor in order to remove as much of the paint as possible. The owner of the house was surprised to see the true colours of the tile appearing, which had been hidden beneath the paint for a significant period of time. As the red paint coating was particularly thick, we had to scrub the floor multiple times. In some areas the paint proved tricky to remove so it was necessary to use a steamer to steam clean the stubborn areas. Once all of the paint had been successfully removed, the unveiled tile floor was treated to another clean using Pro-Clean, before being given a wash down and neutralised using Concentrated Neutral Tile & Stone Cleaner. It’s important to ensure any trace of strong cleaning products are removed from floor before the next step of sealing as it can impact the sealer leading to un-even results. The floor was left to dry off overnight and we came back the next day to seal the tiles using four coats of Tile Doctor Seal & Go which is an ideal sealer for Victorian tiles as it provides stain protection whilst also bringing out the colours resulting in a subtle sheen appearance. You can see from the photos that after a thorough cleaning and sealing the floor was back to looking its best. I do wonder why someone would want to paint over such a fantastic Victorian tiled floor!

Living in the home only part-time, spending their summers in Oconomowac, Wisconsin, John and Barb had an idea of what they wanted, but didn’t know how to bring it to fruition. They also needed someone who they could trust to renovate their home while they were away in Wisconsin. Their vision for their home started with a new kitchen, family room and wet bar. Enjoying their time outdoors and on their lanai, they also envisioned improving their indoor-outdoor living space. With the help of Progressive Design Build, this couple’s home was designed and completed remodeled while they were away, transforming the common area of their home into a more user friendly, functional space. Emphasis was placed on the kitchen and the open floor plan. New tile flooring was installed throughout the space, with all new painting that matched the homeowner’s style and taste. This beautiful North Vancouver home belongs to a nature-loving and health-conscious couple, Emma and Vince (names changed), their two young children, and their dog, Jasper. When they contacted us about renovating and furnishing their kitchen and family room, we walked in and saw a world of potential waiting to be uncovered. Before: Larkhall Crescent Home: Like many original North Vancouver homes, the interior was definitely dated. We encountered late ‘80s finishes in powder pink and teal green, old carpet, and a kitchen that wasn’t maximized to suit this family’s modern-day lifestyle. However, the size of the rooms offered us a ton of space with which to get creative. Knowing our clients’ love of cooking, need for work spaces (Emma and Vince both work remotely), and growing family, we developed a design concept that would increase usable space, optimize storage, and create intimacy in this large area. As for the style, we were inspired by their European roots, inventing a new and modern take on “Belgian Farmhouse” style. Now, the home is truly one-of-a-kind. After: Warm & Cozy Family Room: Fresh, bright, and comfortable, this living area has been transformed! We started with the fireplace as a focal point, selecting aged brick tiles for added texture and a crisp wood mantle. The taupe-coloured sectional infuses the room with visual warmth and serves the added purpose of separating the family room from the kitchen. Emma and Vince were also keen on using non-toxic materials in their home, and we were happy to oblige. To meet their needs, we sourced natural wood elements and sought out Canadian-made products - that adhere to high health standards - whenever possible. Look closer at the elements of this space, and you will find this stunning, honeycomb-patterned rug in earthy gold, beige, and charcoal tones. It’s plush to the touch and full of visual texture that brings this room’s colour palette together. We sourced these two-tone chairs with caning, petrified wood side table, black sconces, and botanical prints in greyscale from local artist, Heather Johnston. We topped off the space with this dark wood and rattan console that offers storage facing the kitchen and presents an opportunity to display cherished items. The result is a cozy lounging space brimming with comfort and functionality. It’s perfect for enjoying quality family time, or Emma can simply slide the coffee table away to make room for her morning yoga practice. The natural wood accent mirrors the fireplace mantle, and the choice of off-black wood-grain cabinets not only continues our black-and-white colour palette but adds a sense of depth and contrast. The corner sink is located to the right and perfectly positioned with a view of their thriving backyard. To invite more of this family’s character into the space, we mixed metals for interest — matte black, dark pewter, and warm brass — and created open shelves in white oak for their plants and decor. You can also glimpse the tumbled edge of the backsplash tile, which echoes the rustic brick of the fireplace. It adds that farmhouse charm while still feeling timeless and sophisticated. Last but not least, we designed this dining banquette in the bay window (with integrated bench storage, of course), where the family can share a meal together, the kids can do homework, or Emma and Vince can work and enjoy a change of scenery from their offices. In All Weather’s latest episode of the hit HGTV series Celebrity IOU, comedian, actor and producer Kevin Hart gives back to his close friend and personal trainer Ron, aka “Boss.” who helped him walk after his serious 2019 car crash. The 42- year old comedian expresses his deep gratitude by transforming his “brothers” backhouse into a sleek man cave complete with a barber shop, as a nod to how they met nearly 19 years ago. “My life got flipped upside down by a tragic accident and Boss was there with me every step of they way,” said Kevin. “This is a small token of my appreciation that Boss won’t see coming and that will hopefully floor him, This renovation is well-deserved because of the person that he is.” Kevin combines forces with the Property Brothers and All Weather to turn Boss’ crumbling backhouse into a stylish retreat where he can relax with friends. Created as a sanctuary for a family of six, this beautifully renovated lake home in a private gated community serves as a calming respite from the hustle and bustle of this family's everyday lives. Soaring views of the wooded lake area beyond are brought indoors with the dining area chandelier's gilded branches, while watery blue hues in the artwork and furnishings reflect the water and sky. Warm woods and earthy charcoals also help reinforce the nod to nature. To brighten the open concept living area, lighter finishes were introduced to reflect the natural light, streaming in through the two-story windows. Layered artificial lighting also helps lighten up the rooms. To highlight key design elements, darker hues were repeated on the fireplace, stove, hood, backs of the shelves, and the windows. Accent lighting on the shelves and underneath the floating cabinet also add a warm ambiance. The rich walnut stain on the floating cabinet and shelves contrasts boldly with the stacked stone fireplace creating a strong focal point in the hearth room area. A dark hued stove hood contrasts sharply with the quartz backsplash in the kitchen creates another strong focal point enhanced by a contrasting color island, bold chandeliers, and contrasting counter stools. The wood hood and island warm up the white wall of kitchen cabinets. The kitchen boasts multiple zones for family and friends. from a large island for gatherings and a lit up hidden coffee bar with a water spigot to swivel chairs for watching the fire or falling snow. The abstract painting in the dining area draws the eye up to show off the two-story room, while the centerpiece feels like someone just crafted it from the clay outdoors. The laundry room was enlarged so it could also serve as a mudroom with cubbies and a butler's pantry where laundry becomes a joy instead of a chore. The guest bath continues the nurturing theme of livable luxury with a focus on calming blues and texture over pattern.
