The owners with their passion for Architecture and their love of cooking and entertaining hired George Siwy of Artisan Kitchens & Baths at Appliance Associates to make this dream a reality. The project started with the removal of a load bearing wall that structurally supported two stories above. The project called for a structural engineer to design the right size beam that can be supported by two columns that were built flush into the walls to give the space a more open feel. George Suggested in bringing in the homes architectural elements by choosing materials and details that were historic to the era of the home. Such details consist of the inset cabinet doors and its recessed panel and molding details, which relate to the quarter sawn oak stair case existing and wainscoting panel details found throughout the first floor of the home. The perimeter cabinetry in the kitchen consist of a maple wood species with a reversed raised panel door style painted white. The island and bar cabinetry consist of a wood species quarter sawn oak stained in an onyx color to relate to a historic cast iron stove inserted into a fireplace which is all original to the home. The imperfect glass seen on either side of the mullion glass windows, which are original to the home, is repeated within the design of the hutch and bar areas with a “seeded glass” material. The natural countertop materials chosen for this project were seen in the early 20th century era homes, such as Carrera marble which was used in the island and bar areas as well as the Soapstone material used for the perimeter cabinetry. The well thought out design has made the homeowners dreams a reality, with a kitchen that relates well to its existing architectural elements and brought up to date with modern conveniences of today. I removed several pieces within the kitchen, including dated appliances, a few gingerbread valances, brass knobs, yellow paint, and a boring chandelier above the kitchen table area. I added a mixed materials backsplash, new oil rubbed bronze hardware throughout the home on all cabinetry and doors with the exception of the newly remodeled master bathroom. Large imposing faux pillars dominated the dining area, and once removed, allowed the open floor plan to flow. Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter paint was used throughout the house except in the master bath where I used Sherwin Wms. Pediment. I added custom window treatments to all bedrooms and the living room, and the client opted for new furniture in the kitchen, living room and dining room, rounding out a most lovely new, and improved, transitional style. New lighting was added throughout the three bedroom home, and a covered room pergolas was added to the exterior patio area. The client, newly relocated to the Pittsburgh area from New York wanted a very specific master bathroom, and that is what was delivered: a top of the line, sleek, spa-like space that will allow seamless aging in place. Overall, the project went flawlessly and my client is very pleased with the results.

Scott and Deneen Knisely built their handcrafted log home in Lock Haven Pennsylvania with hope to preserve a piece of their community’s history. In 2002, the Kniselys lived near a 20-acre property that included the Rocky Point Lodge, a locally known log house dating back more than 70 years. The building was serving as a restaurant at the time, but had taken on many roles over the years—first, and most notably, as a Boy Scout camp. When Scott heard a rumor that the property might be going on the market, he had a word with the owner, expressing his interest in buying it. Six weeks later, the acreage was his. “We loved the property and the building,” says Deneen, “but it was too damaged to be saved.” So they got to work researching companies to build the new home that would replace the old one. Since so many local people have fond childhood memories of time spent at the lodge, the Kniselys decided that the new structure should resemble the old one as closely as possible, so they looked for a design that would use the same footprint as the original. After a quick trip to Virginia to look at an existing house, they chose a modified version of the “Robinson,” a 3,750-square-foot plan by Hearthstone Inc. “When the house was being built, I researched things such as period molding depth, wainscoting height and the look of the floors,” says Deneen. Hearthstone even had the logs sandblasted to give them a weathered look. “We just love the rustic, warm feeling of a log home,” Deneen adds. “No other home compares.” The home is made from large-diameter eastern white pine in a profile from the Bob Timberlake series. “The log is sawn on two sides, then hand-hewn to a 6-inch thickness with varying heights,” says Ernie. To top off the home’s vintage look, Pat Woody of Lynchburg, Virginia, got to work on the chinking. Pat specializes in period reproductions and historical homes. The variations in the chinking are the perfect finishing touch to bring home the 19th-century flavor the Kniselys desired.
