Nestled between multiple stands of Live Oak trees, the Westlake Residence is a contemporary Texas Hill Country home. The house is designed to accommodate the entire family, yet flexible in its design to be able to scale down into living only in 2,200 square feet when the children leave in several years. The home includes many state-of-the-art green features and multiple flex spaces capable of hosting large gatherings or small, intimate groups. The flow and design of the home provides for privacy from surrounding properties and streets, as well as to focus all of the entertaining to the center of the home. Inspiration for a transitional living room library remodel in Minneapolis

This Westlake site posed several challenges that included managing a sloping lot and capturing the views of downtown Austin in specific locations on the lot, while staying within the height restrictions. The service and garages split in two, buffering the less private areas of the lot creating an inner courtyard. The ancillary rooms are organized around this court leading up to the entertaining areas. The main living areas serve as a transition to a private natural vegetative bluff on the North side. Breezeways and terraces connect the various outdoor living spaces feeding off the great room and dining, balancing natural light and summer breezes to the interior spaces. The private areas are located on the upper level, organized in an inverted “u”, maximizing the best views on the lot. The residence represents a programmatic collaboration of the clients’ needs and subdivision restrictions while engaging the unique features of the lot. Lafayette Square is a historic district in the City of Saint Louis. The home was built before the turn of the last century. The kitchen had been remodeled several times since the 1880s. The clients of this DC rowhome opted for ceramic floor tile that resembles hardwood. Radiant heating underneath keeps the room warm from the floor up in the winter.

Conceived as a remodel and addition, the final design iteration for this home is uniquely multifaceted. Structural considerations required a more extensive tear down, however the clients wanted the entire remodel design kept intact, essentially recreating much of the existing home. The overall floor plan design centers on maximizing the views, while extensive glazing is carefully placed to frame and enhance them. The residence opens up to the outdoor living and views from multiple spaces and visually connects interior spaces in the inner court. The client, who also specializes in residential interiors, had a vision of ‘transitional’ style for the home, marrying clean and contemporary elements with touches of antique charm. Energy efficient materials along with reclaimed architectural wood details were seamlessly integrated, adding sustainable design elements to this transitional design. The architect and client collaboration strived to achieve modern, clean spaces playfully interjecting rustic elements throughout the home. Photographer: Tom Crane Made of 300, 10-foot steel blades set upright 8 inches apart, the award winning Cor-Ten Cattails Sculptural fence was designed for a home in Berwyn, Pennsylvania as a yard sculpture that also keeps deer out. Made of COR-TEN, a steel alloy that eliminates the need for painting and maintains a rich, dark rust color without corroding, the fence stanchions were cut with a plasma cutter from sheets of the alloy. Each blade stands 8 feet above grade, set in concrete 3 feet below, weighs 80-90 pounds and is 5/8 inch thick. The profile of the blades is an irregular trapezoid with no horizontal connections or supports. Only the gate has two horizontal bars, and each leaf weighs 1200 pounds.

Fireplace Details: The hearth is a 4" thick cast stone with a rough edge and the stone on the fireplace is Fond du lac - Cambrian Blend from Bruechel Stone Corp. Mantel & Corbels were custom designed
