This new installation highlights the benefits of paving with grass, as well as the comparative ease of installation. Concrete and asphalt surfaces occupy twice the area of buildings and are the most detrimental to clean water. Concrete and asphalt surfaces dominate the landscape of our urban environments and prevent rainwater from being filtered naturally. They send harmful polluted water straight into our streams, rivers and lakes. In urban America, concrete and asphalt pavements produce two thirds of our excess water runoff. They are responsible for significant hydrocarbon pollutants on our ground and in our water, causing ground water decline, and resulting in local water shortages. These concrete and asphalt surfaces also create huge increases in temperature known as the urban “heat island effect”.
The pollution caused by impervious surfaces deteriorate the quality of our storm water runoff and create large overflows that our storm sewer systems cannot handle. It is also important to realize that the urban forest force is drastically diminishing, causing CO2 levels to rise, which in turn causes global warming. With all the negative influences of impervious pavements now is the time to turn our attention to alternatives for the benefit of the environment.

Studio Terrain recreated this outdoor entertaining after a major home extension. Taking advantage of sweeping 180 degree views of the Puget sound, Orca Pods, Humpback whales and the Olympic mountains, the design allows for maximum view corridors from the inside while still providing space for 40+ guests.
Utilizing a louvered roof system and overhead heat for four seasons entertaining, the wood fired pizza oven provides a central gathering point year round. The lawn was engineered to the same specs as world class soccer fields providing fast draining lawn use in the wettest seasons. A clean concrete lawn edge is actually a hidden structural retaining wall with pin piles to stabilize the slope edge.

A small residential, seaside property located on Fairfield Beach, Fairfield was renovated by the new owners and adapted for their active family. Barbara was the landscape architect in charge of all of the landscape elements upgrades. She designed new bluestone curving paths to access the front and side doors and designed new landscape lighting to enhance the walks. The existing trees were saved and she designed new shade and salt-tolerant plantings which were added to provide seasonal color and interest while respecting the existing plantings. Along the beach front additional native beach grasses were added to stabilize the dunes while removing some invasive plantings. This work will be phased over the next few years in an effort to keep the sand stable. Beach roses were incorporated into a hollow in the dunes. A small lawn area was renovated and the surrounding Black Pines pruned to provide a small play area and respite from the sun. Beautiful reblooming hydrangeas line the edge of the gravel driveway. Rounded beach stones were used instead of mulch in the island planting along the edge of the adjacent road planted with Miscanthus, Mugo pine and yucca.
Barbara designed a custom kayak rack, custom garbage enclosure, a new layout of the existing wooden deck to facilitate access to the side doors, and detailed how to renovate the front door into only an emergency access with new railings and steps.
She coordinating obtaining bids and then supervised the installation of all elements for the new landscape the project.
The interiors were designed by Jack Montgomery Design of Greenwich, CT and NYC . Tree work was completed by Bartlett Tree Experts. Freddy’s Landscape Company of Fairfield, CT installed the new plantings, installed all the new masonry work and provides landscape maintenance services. JT Low Voltage and Electric installed the landscape lighting.

Located in Ovacik, an area in Izmir, Turkey, covering 2580 sqm harvested land especially for vineyards, oriented towards North-West, South-East axis, the Ovacik winery is designed as a wine manufacturing - aiming to produce 10.000 wine bottles per year- and accommodation center. The North-East facade is facing the vineyards while the South-West facade is facing the Aegean Sea view.
The wine manufacturing and the accommodation rooms are two programs in the project serving diverse user groups; seasonal employees and leisure visitors. The manufacturing area on the North-West wing designed next to the adjacent farm, blocks the noise acting as a barrier for the rest of the complex.
On the North-West parcel, on one third portion of the lot an ancient village house ruin from the late 19th century is found which is preserved and integrated into the landscape and design.
Due to the manufacturing process, wine making area require 6m of ceiling height. From the terrace level through the openings on the restaurant facing the neighboring manufacturing area, the visitors can observe the process of wine making. Also these openings allow natural ventilation which helps protect the barrel cellar from excessive heat and drought.
For heating and cooling of the facility, ground source system is integrated, allowing minimum external intervention in the future through the stabilization of the heat of ground. In order to maintain the temperature conditions for the wine storage room, the barrel cellar is constructed under the landscape.
Following the natural slope topography existing earth/soil is carried and reused above the accommodation volumes to create a green roof which can also be seen from the restaurant terrace as a part of the natural environment.

Distributed by Timspec, Accoya was used chosen as the ideal material to clad a show home in Auckland.
Accoya was selected for the black coated weatherboards on the front section of the house, due to its durability and stability benefits. Because of Accoya’s modification technique it is the ideal wood for external cladding such as this.
Generally, problems can occur with darker coatings on cladding, due to shrink and swell being exasperated by the solar gain. But, Accoya wood’s superior dimensional stability negates this problem and maintenance intervals are dramatically extended.
The cladding needed to be aesthetically pleasing as well as highly durable in order to withstand the extreme climates in New Zealand. Accoya was also chosen due to its rot resistant benefits and its ability to deter insects in these types of environments.

Set against the superb modernist architecture of Moto Designshop, and within the existing COR-TEN steel rain troughs by Studio | Bryan Hanes, this terraced garden frames and maximizes views from the rear facade to the pond below.
The garden design focused on verging wild, intermingled plant communities with the floor-to-ceiling windows of the family's living space to provide ongoing seasonal interest and visual diversity. Working closely with agronomists, aggregate substrates, calcium and humates were incorporated to ensure adequate drainage and soil health. Rapid stabilization of the very wet, narrow spaces was achieved with freely seeding Eupatorium coelestinum and plantings of stoloniferous and rhizomatous plants, such as Carex muskingumensis and Iris fulva, among cespitose clumps.

Seabreeze Sparkle Pressure Washing completed this paver cleaning, re-sanding, and sealing project in Port Orange, Florida. The pavers had built-up dirt, organic growth, faded color, and loose joint sand before service.
We pressure cleaned the surface, removed debris from the joints, applied fresh joint sand where needed, and sealed the pavers with a commercial-grade sealer to help enhance color, protect the surface, stabilize the joints, and improve curb appeal. This project shows the full process of professional paver cleaning, paver sanding, and paver sealing for a cleaner, brighter, longer-lasting outdoor space.

This style shows the privacy fence in its simplest form. This customer choose to use western red cedar to build this fence for its durability and beauty. Shown with a two post trellis. Trellis' not only look nice but they also sure up the gate posts by mating them together.

The front entry is designed combining functionality, and aesthetics. The river rock is for the street drainage that leads to a retention pond. The boulders nestled into the plantings are to help stabilize the slope, as well as adding a space to move around easy while maintaining. The grave is for a pathway that meanders through their 5 acres. Wooden screen on the right of the house is to conceal trash cans, and the flagstone path leads to the main entertaining space in the back.

Clean, simple, modern design built into a hillside on the east side of Aspen. Closed, organic Sirewall anchoring the house on one side, and an open tree house feel on the other. The Sirewall utilizes material from the excavation, minimizing the need for importing resources. It also acts as a heat sink - helping to stabilize the internal temperature and conserve energy.
