*NATURAL/DAYLIGHT* WOW! This turned out to be an extremely powerful kitchen renovation project. This client was the most easy-going guy and a craftsman himself at that. I knew then, though, he wouldn't settle for something simple. He came in and explained he had been looking for a back splash but had this really dramatic island counter top to work around. We decided on a long, creamy subway tile with a crackle finish for the main field but he wanted an accent to jazz that up. We tried an iridescent glass that looked amazing in the showroom with everything, but almost took on too much blue/green at home in his lighting. After tweaking it a bit, we decided on a matte hand painted ivory stone hexagon in the frame. We added an inset of 1X1 gloss glass accents around the hexagons to bring out some color. Never a bad idea to to mix finishes! We couldn't go too over the top, again, because of the island, but this delicate stone brings in enough interest without being distracting. I think the stone keeps the style of the kitchen more in that traditional/transitional phase, where the specific glass we started with might've been a little too modern. It's definitely an updated look, and it's fabulous. The colors in the frame worked wonderfully with the island and I think that ties everything back around. Overall, I'd say this project had a timeless and elegant feel, but also includes unique touches that add a little something different. Beautiful!

KLI was responsible for all interior finishes, fixtures, furnishings, and design including the stairs, casework, interior doors, moldings and millwork. KLI also worked with the client on selecting the roof, exterior stucco and paint colors, stone, windows, and doors. The homeowners had purchased the existing home on a lakefront lot of the Valley Lo community in Glenview, thinking that it would be a gut renovation, but when they discovered a host of issues including mold, they decided to tear it down and start from scratch. The minute you look out the living room windows, you feel as though you're on a lakeside vacation in Wisconsin or Michigan. We wanted to help the homeowners achieve this feeling throughout the house - merging the causal vibe of a vacation home with the elegance desired for a primary residence. This project is unique and personal in many ways - Rebekah and the homeowner, Lorie, had grown up together in a small suburb of Columbus, Ohio. Lorie had been Rebekah's babysitter and was like an older sister growing up. They were both heavily influenced by the style of the late 70's and early 80's boho/hippy meets disco and 80's glam, and both credit their moms for an early interest in anything related to art, design, and style. This client, a smart, energetic, creative, happy person, a man who, in-person, presents as refined and understated — he wanted color. Lots of color. When we introduced some color, he wanted even more color: Bright pops; lively art. In fact, it started with the art. This new homeowner was shopping at SLATE ( https://slateart.net) for art one day… many people choose art as the finishing touches to an interior design project, however this man had not yet hired a designer. He mentioned his predicament to SLATE principal partner (and our dear partner in art sourcing) Danielle Fox, and she promptly referred him to us. At the time that we began our work, the client and his architect, Jack Backus, had finished up a massive remodel, a thoughtful and thorough update of the elegant, iconic mid-century structure (originally designed by Ratcliff & Ratcliff) for modern 21st-century living. And when we say, “the client and his architect” — we mean it. In his professional life, our client owns a metal fabrication company; given his skills and knowledge of engineering, build, and production, he elected to act as contractor on the project. His eye for metal and form made its way into some of our furniture selections, in particular the coffee table in the living room, fabricated and sold locally by Turtle and Hare. Color for miles: One of our favorite aspects of the project was the long hallway. By choosing to put nothing on the walls, and adorning the length of floor with an amazing, vibrant, patterned rug, we created a perfect venue. The rug stands out, drawing attention to the art on the floor. In fact, the rugs in each room were as thoughtfully selected for color and design as the art on the walls. Cozy and Colorful Beach House Remodel! When you think funky little house by the beach – images like what you are about to see may not be what you would have anticipated. This furnishings project aimed to capture a colorful, fun, active space for a family who wanted to feel at home .Thus, creating casual and comfortable but not boring in the least. A little traveled, a lot of texture, and not much clutter! From the start, the space was not much to write home about! The common living areas were boxy with lower ceilings. Quirky ins and outs needed to be optimized. Overall, this project was a prime opportunity for us to really dig in. From treating each room top to bottom and finding the client’s mojo when it came to wallcoverings. Selecting funky lighting and the right mix and match of bold colors and more natural, organic textures. We came in too late to get involved with the kitchen but helped the client with a few little accents and color choices. Thus, acting as a jumping off point for the large dining space featuring a beautiful (and resilient!) wooden trestle table. We created a mix of seating that offers a little funk, and the fun additional cabinet storage to each end which offered a hideaway. We loved that this vista had such opportunity for great lighting and art, also! A Colorful, Cozy Living Room We knew we needed a cozy, lower profile seating area but also some sort of great reading nook by the fireplace. With the large windows and the main entry just off this space, a traffic pattern was delianted that helped guide decisions with the furniture. A funky, nubbier woven fabric on the sectional that hinted towards mid-century modern. The irregular shaped, petrified wood coffee table. The bold statement and colors carried through in the wallcovering and area rug. Jumping to the fireplace area where you can lounge or read with those gorgeous cognac leather recliners. This space needed to feel separate and the same all at once. The balance of scale and colors really helped achieve this! Can’t forget the bedrooms! Of course we can’t get by without mentioning a little bedroom love, either. In the master the overall designs dictated by a bold, saturated woven wood cloth on the headboard wall. We love the mix of color and pattern in here. The bold, sexier mood is 100% a byproduct of the level of rich colors and unusual combinations. Those bold hand-glazed ceramic lamps against those strict geo-pattern bed pillows – so good! Our sweet tween bedroom that should grow with her for a good, long time. All in all, filled with original art and layered in a softer palette. There was a lot of matching in here at first, but once we convinced her to trust us she started to understand why adding in the unexpected hit of bright coral and spring green made everything sing!

This room had great potential with an existing wall colour and custom cabinet unit that these clients loved. Often people think to get a fresh new look you need to start from scratch, however that is not the case. We upcycled the existing custom cabinet by painting it with a warm white chalk paint AND we think it turned out lovely! For this space we added a single bed with a rattan petal shaped headboard giving this room a whimsical feel. By angling the bed to the door, we were able to create a welcoming environment. What makes this room stand out the most is the unexpected hanging wall rug. Its vibrant colours and subtle pattern are the perfect backdrop for this small space. Hints of brushed gold, small accents and vibrant accent cushions complete this look, making for a quaint guest retreat your guests won’t want to leave.

Some projects start with a vision. This one started with a memory — a Chicago bar the homeowners couldn't stop thinking about, and an unfinished basement just waiting for its second act. Built years earlier with the intent to finish it later, this basement became a full-blown speakeasy — complete with a hidden door leading into the main bar area, because the best spaces make you work a little to find them. Reclaimed Rosewood brick lines the walls, paired with wall trim through the theater area for a layered, lived-in feel. A faux tin ceiling hides painted-to-blend speakers and lighting, so the tech disappears and the room takes center stage. Behind the bar, a mirrored backsplash catches the light, while a tile inlay surrounded by rich hardwood grounds the space underfoot. Metal foot rails, a custom cherry wood bar top, and a spill ledge on the theater bar countertop round out a room built for entertaining. The exposed I-beam could have been a problem to hide. Instead, we made it a feature — a nod to the industrial, speakeasy mood running through the space. A custom-welded glass front and sheet metal barn door carry that aesthetic through. Our partners at Bravas brought it to life with a short-throw projector and digital electrical panels that let the homeowners shift the mood at the touch of a button — bright for movie night, moody for late-night entertaining.
