To keep plants from going into the pool, I recommend planting succulents, and using only one or two varieties to maintain a streamlined appearance. If they are nearby a fire pit, as seen here, make sure that all flora stay contained inside the planter, so as not to catch on fire.

The exterior of what looks like a vernacular Hamptons shingle cottage, designed by architect Blaze Makoid, is intentionally deceiving. For the interiors, Axis Mundi typically decided not to play by the rules. Instead of de rigeur nautical artifacts, floppy sofas and wicker furniture, the firm responded to Makoid’s all-white interior envelope by injecting rooms with comfortable modern elegance that’s more contemporary Cap Ferrat than Eastern Long Island. Clean furniture silhouettes—from Cassina, Poltrona Frau and B&B Italia—a Massimo Vitali beach scene, a Moooi chandelier and industrial finishes (such as the steel of the fireplace surround and the anodized aluminum of a sleek Bulthaup kitchen) spark a creative tension between indoors and out. The gray palette provides a quiet backdrop for the nature outside, except for the master suite, where custom oak panels and blue shades create a reassuring warmth conducive to sleep. This historic home needed a kitchen refresh. We took out the black hood and had a custom wood hood built instead. We kept the original island, but painted it a new greige color. The original cutting board stayed as the homeowners love using it. We then added granite counters in a leathered finish to build it up to the same height as the wood end.

I designed a custom bar with a wine fridge, base cabinets, waterfall counterop and floating shelves above. The floating shelves were to display the beautiful collection of bottles the home owners had. To make a feature wall, as an an alternative to the intertia, expense and dust associated with tile, I used wallpaper. Fear not, its vynil and can take some water damage, one quick qipe and done. We stayed on budget by using Ikea cabinets with custom cabinet fronts from semihandmade. In the foyer beyond, we added floor to ceiling storage and a surface that they use as a foyer console table.

Inspiration for a mid-sized southwestern guest medium tone wood floor and brown floor bedroom remodel in Other with white walls

After the devastating Tubbs fire, Craig reimagined this Calistoga property into a wine country retreat for the owners' family as well as corporate/wellness guests. He approached the design by studying the natural elements of the site including trees, views and light, the vernacular design of the area and the clients’ personality. Craig designed a barn and the house – made up of a one-story and a two-story building – connected by a stunning 20-foot steel and glass breezeway. Expansive doors and windows create seamless indoor/outdoor flow and numerous patios and the pool area provide comfortable outdoor spaces. The modern and warm interior is bright, luxurious and comfortable.

Inspiration for a transitional kitchen remodel in Boston

We transformed a former office space/house into the perfect getaway. Work included lifting the structure several feet in the air, and re-constructing all the interior spaces to accommodate three private guest suites, each complete with their own bathroom. The beachy, casual vibe carries throughout the spaces, thanks to the owners' (an architect/artist duo) creative vision. The Santa Rosalia guest house is now the perfect space for launching a PNW getaway, with Edmonds' storefronts, bookshops, coffee, and beaches just steps away.
