This backyard was completely reimagined into a modern, fully automated outdoor living space designed for relaxation, entertaining, and year-round enjoyment. At the center of the design is a fully automated 11’ x 9’ inground spa, equipped with a dedicated pump for powerful swimming jets and a sleek sheer descent water feature. The spa is finished with pour-in-place coping, stack stone on the spa facing, and low-voltage LED lighting to enhance both functionality and nighttime ambiance. Adjacent to the spa is a custom rectangular fire pit, featuring pour-in-place coping, stack stone veneer, and integrated low-voltage lighting, creating a warm and inviting focal point for evening gatherings. For entertaining, we built a custom BBQ island topped with a concrete countertop, and fully equipped with an ice chest, refrigerator, trash pull-out, and ample storage space, offering both durability and a clean, modern aesthetic. The hardscape includes 24” x 12” decking pavers installed throughout the yard and continued along the side of the house, all designed with proper drainage for long-term performance and durability. A raised planter system adds structure and greenery to the space, finished with pour-in-place coping, smooth stucco planter faces, and low-voltage lighting both on and within the planters. An irrigation drip system was integrated into all planters to ensure efficient watering and healthy plant growth with minimal maintenance. To soften the design, artificial grass with stepping stones was installed, creating a low-maintenance, lush look while improving flow through the yard. For evening atmosphere, three metal posts were installed for string lighting, complemented by low-voltage lighting throughout all flat and raised planters to deliver layered, resort-style ambiance after dark. Finally, white vinyl gates and fencing were added to enclose and conceal the spa and pool equipment, topped with a privacy extension to keep the space visually clean and private. The result is a cohesive, modern outdoor retreat that balances design, comfort, and functionality. Perfect for both entertaining and everyday enjoyment.

This home sits at a dramatic juncture between a state highway and the Columbia River, adjacent to the Lewis and Clark Scenic Byway. Steps away from its namesake, Steamboat Landing Park, the home has dramatic 180 degree views of the river, Mount Hood, and Oregon beyond. Creating a connection and celebrating this stunning natural setting while keeping highway noise at bay was one of this project's primary goals. Equally as important was the goal to design a high-performance building. These goals were met by implementing an energy-efficient heat pump system, radiant floor heating, 10" thick super-insulated concrete walls, closed-cell spray foam insulation in the attic, and triple-pane windows throughout. The sustainable attributes were balanced with durable and long-lasting materials, including standing seam metal roofing, stucco, and cedar siding to create a home that will stand for generations. Honoring the homeowner's request to design an age-in-place, one-level home, the plan is a simple sequence of bars with the two largest capped by gable roofs. The tallest of the bars closest to the highway is a garage, which houses the couple's much-loved Airstream. A smaller flat-roofed bar acts as a connector between the gabled forms and serves as the home's entry with the kitchen functions beyond. The largest of the bars, and the one closest to the river, includes an open concept great room flanked by two-bedroom suites on either side. A water-front deck spans the entire living and dining area, with a twenty-foot wide multi-slide panel door offering a seamless connection to an outdoor covered entertainment area. JDBG is wrapping up work on an expansive 2-story sunroom addition that also included modifications to the existing home’s interior and significant exterior improvements as well. The original project brief was to provide a conditioned 4-season sunroom addition where the homeowners could relax and enjoy their wooded views. As we delved deeper into our client’s overall objectives, it became clear that this would be no ordinary sunroom addition. The resulting 16’x25’ sunroom is a showstopper with 10’ high ceilings and wall to wall windows offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. As we recommend with most addition projects, the process started with our Preliminary Design Study to determine project goals, design concepts, project feasibility and associated budget estimates. During this process, our design team worked to ensure that both interior and exterior were fully integrated. We conducted in-depth programming to identify key goals and needs which would inform the design and performed a field survey and zoning analysis to identify any constraints that could impact the plans. The next step was to develop conceptual designs that addressed the program requirements. Using a combination of 3-D massing, interior/exterior renderings, precedent imaging and space planning, the design concept was revised and refined. At the end of the study we had an approved schematic design and comprehensive budget estimates for the 2-story addition and were ready to move into design development, construction documentation, trade coordination, and final pricing. A complex project such as this involves architectural and interior design, structural and civil engineering, landscape design and environmental considerations. Multiple trades and subs are engaged during construction, from HVAC to electrical and plumbing, framers, carpenters and masons, roofers and painters just to name a few. JDBG was there every step of the way to ensure quality construction. Other notable features of the renovation included expanding the home’s existing dining room, incorporating a custom ‘dish room,’ and providing fully conditioned storage and his & her workrooms on the lower level. A new front portico will visually connect the old and new structures and a brand new roof, shutters and paint will further transform the exterior. Thoughtful planning was also given to the landscape, including a back deck, stone patio and walkways, plantings and exterior lighting.
