This Milford French country home’s 2,500 sq. ft. basement transformation is just as extraordinary as it is warm and inviting. The M.J. Whelan design team, along with our clients, left no details out. This luxury basement is a beautiful blend of modern and rustic materials. A unique tray ceiling with a hardwood inset defines the space of the full bar. Brookhaven maple custom cabinets with a dark bistro finish and Cambria quartz countertops were used along with state of the art appliances. A brick backsplash and vintage pendant lights with new LED Edison bulbs add beautiful drama. The entertainment area features a custom built-in entertainment center designed specifically to our client’s wishes. It houses a large flat screen TV, lots of storage, display shelves and speakers hidden by speaker fabric. LED accent lighting was strategically installed to highlight this beautiful space. The entertaining area is open to the billiards room, featuring a another beautiful brick accent wall with a direct vent fireplace. The old ugly steel columns were beautifully disguised with raised panel moldings and were used to create and define the different spaces, even a hallway. The exercise room and game space are open to each other and features glass all around to keep it open to the rest of the lower level. Another brick accent wall was used in the game area with hardwood flooring while the exercise room has rubber flooring. The design also includes a rear foyer coming in from the back yard with cubbies and a custom barn door to separate that entry. A playroom and a dining area were also included in this fabulous luxurious family retreat. Stunning Provenza engineered hardwood in a weathered wire brushed combined with textured Fabrica carpet was used throughout most of the basement floor which is heated hydronically. This modern farmhouse located outside of Spokane, Washington, creates a prominent focal point among the landscape of rolling plains. The composition of the home is dominated by three steep gable rooflines linked together by a central spine. This unique design evokes a sense of expansion and contraction from one space to the next. Vertical cedar siding, poured concrete, and zinc gray metal elements clad the modern farmhouse, which, combined with a shop that has the aesthetic of a weathered barn, creates a sense of modernity that remains rooted to the surrounding environment. The Glo double pane A5 Series windows and doors were selected for the project because of their sleek, modern aesthetic and advanced thermal technology over traditional aluminum windows. High performance spacers, low iron glass, larger continuous thermal breaks, and multiple air seals allows the A5 Series to deliver high performance values and cost effective durability while remaining a sophisticated and stylish design choice. Strategically placed operable windows paired with large expanses of fixed picture windows provide natural ventilation and a visual connection to the outdoors.

This home offers the perfect blend of sleek and modern elements. The open concept and bright white palette are inviting (and pet-friendly) from the moment you enter. A stunning open tread staircase draws the eyes up to the family room's high ceilings, creating an elevated look. The home has a marble fireplace as another main focal point; a modern kitchen with flat-panel cabinets, built-in appliances and waterfall marble island; a luxurious main floor master bedroom and ensuite with walkout access to the back patio and pool area; two second-floor bedrooms each with ensuites, and in the basement there is a bar, media room and exercise room. The family wanted a home that has both style and inspiration on the inside and the outside—and this home delivered. The design embraces the conventions of a traditional family home, while also touting a timeless appeal through a unique blend of exterior exposed steel columns, stone cladding, a mix of Maibec wood siding with Extira pre-painted and cedar soffits, and more contemporary windows. Expansive windows are strategically placed at the front and rear of the home, to let in natural light but kept minimal at the sides for privacy. The build also includes a garage on the right rear side of the home with a pool change house that matches the home in finishes and quality. The home was also built with an insulated concrete foundation in order to perform a higher r-value. Since the reveal, this home has been captured and photographed frequently by those who pass by.

Our client sought to modernize their classic 1970s home while preserving its original charm. This full-home renovation prioritized openness and functionality. We transformed the kitchen into a bright, welcoming space, leveled the sunken living room to expand the living area, and designed seamless indoor-outdoor connections to showcase breathtaking south-west facing golf course & ocean views. The result? A beautifully updated home that harmonizes mid-century character with contemporary comfort. The architecture was fun to work with, featuring dramatic roof pitches, a striking two-story double-sided fireplace, and thoughtfully designed room-to-room connections. Strategic wall cutouts and varying floor levels added interest and character, making this home a truly unique and dynamic space. The kitchen connects to the exterior, dining room, and living room, and features a peninsula and a cozy morning nook for gathering. Thoughtful flow was essential for this busy space, creating distinct yet harmonious spaces to enjoy throughout the home. Texture was thoughtfully incorporated using natural materials, including quartzite with cloud-like movement, woven light fixtures, and high-variation ceramic tile. The oak flooring, rich with knots and striking grain patterns, adds warmth and character to the space.

Designed and constructed by Los Angeles architect, John Southern and his firm Urban Operations, the Slice and Fold House is a contemporary hillside home in the cosmopolitan neighborhood of Highland Park. Nestling into its steep hillside site, the house steps gracefully up the sloping topography, and provides outdoor space for every room without additional sitework. The first floor is conceived as an open plan, and features strategically located light-wells that flood the home with sunlight from above. On the second floor, each bedroom has access to outdoor space, decks and an at-grade patio, which opens onto a landscaped backyard. The home also features a roof deck inspired by Le Corbusier’s early villas, and where one can see Griffith Park and the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance.

The Garage project is a transformative Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) conversion built within the footprint of an existing detached garage. During the initial phases, a unique hidden roof structure was discovered—constructed from the original concrete board forms used to pour the main house's foundation—which presented a compelling opportunity for historical integration. To enhance the environmental performance of the compact space, new rammed earth block walls were strategically introduced as thermal mass, facilitating highly efficient passive heating and cooling. A secondary rammed earth wall anchors the living space behind a wood-burning stove, acting both as a spatial separator and a functional thermal battery that absorbs and radiates heat. This commitment to material conservation also extended to the exterior envelope. Rather than condemning the structure's original old-growth redwood siding to a landfill, the material was carefully salvaged, stripped of its existing paint, and adaptively reused to construct custom cabinet faces—celebrating the inherent history and preciousness of the timber.
