The concept 'White on White' is a desire to play with the idea of cloaking stimuli in white, against white canvases of ceilings, walls and floors. The strategy allowed for a cool purity of white tones that managed to still breathe warmth into the living space. - www.0932.am

Madrona Passive House, a new Seattle home designed by SHED Architecture & Design and built by Hammer & Hand, combines contemporary design with high performance building to create an environmentally responsive and resource-efficient house.
The home’s airtight, super-insulated building envelope and passive design minimize energy consumption while providing superior thermal comfort to occupants. A heat recovery ventilator supplies constant fresh air to the home’s interior while recovering 90% of thermal energy from exhaust air for reuse inside. A rooftop solar photovoltaic array will provide enough energy to offset most, perhaps all, of the home’s energy consumption on a net annual basis. To manage stormwater the project employs permeable pavers for site hardscape and two cisterns to capture and control rainwater from the home’s roof and the green roof on the garage.
By investing in sustainable site development strategies, efficient building systems and an advanced envelope, the project aims to respect the home’s environmentally critical site and achieve one of the world’s most demanding building energy standards: Passive House.

The challenge with remodels is understanding the existing architectural story, before rewriting a new one. In this case, the house had a diaginal stair cutting through the main floor and blocking the kitchen from the living space. The strategy was to fuse the spaces together and make the stair handrails as transparent as possible to gave the floor an open feel, punctuated by the diagonal stair and monolithic marble island.

Hugh Lofting Timber Framing (HLTF) manufactured and installed the Southern Yellow Pine glued-laminated (glulams) beams and the Douglas Fir lock deck T&G in this modern house in Centreville, MD. HLTF worked closely with Torchio Architects to develop the steel connection designs and the overall glulam strategy for the project.

Notice the fun pocket windows along the west-facing wall. They were specifically designed to minimize the amount of glaring western sunlight entering the home and provide snippets of views of the beautiful hillside behind. They serve two other important functions: senses of security and privacy. The homeowners can see from their kitchen and living room small views of the road and who is entering their driveway, but drivers-by cannot see in.
The Crimson Bluffs Home is a sustainable smaller home with 360 degree views of the Missouri River and various mountain ranges. Energy-efficiency strategies include long-lasting building materials, passive cooling, ample natural day lighting, high insulation values, advanced framing, and a combined heating approach of passive solar heat gain and radiant hydronic floor heating, a strategy we call “Sun Smart Radiant Heating.”
Also notice the tiled radiant hydronic floor soaking up the sun's natural energy on this February 15th day. The passively collected heat is actively distributed throughout the first floor by the radiant floor in a strategy we call "Sun Smart Radiant Heat."
