Our client's central stairwell is dramatically lit by a custom domed acrylic skylight. They soon discovered that the stairwell became too bright and hot, especially during summer months. The challenge was to control the temperature and glare without overheating the acrylic of the skylight or compromising the elegant character of the stairway. The solution is a nearly 12’ long x 8’ wide horizontal OpenLight shade that operates with the push of a button. White/white 3% open fabric stops 97% of the light while allowing sufficient light to brighten the stairway. It also minimizes heating falling into the stairwell while letting enough heat dissipate so as not to overheat the skylight. The fabric itself has a fiberglass substrate so that it can withstand the heat without stretching. OpenLight shades are fabricated in the Creative Windows Ann Arbor plant and are available in an exceptionally wide selection of fabrics and creative applications. Shade shown here is partially deployed to highlight the dramatic stairwell and interesting architecture of the home. The white fabric of the shade matches the shade fabric used throughout the house. The white casing blends with the wall and trim color. The shade is an elegant solution to the problem that complements the homes modern aesthetic. Our client purchased a lakeside home in Fenton, MI that features a central stairwell that is dramatically lit by a custom 12’ long x8’ wide domed skylight. Positioned over the entry stairwell and running the entire length of the foyer below, they soon discovered that the stairwell became too bright and hot, especially during summer months. How to tie a dark wood floor to the rest of the room when you want to paint light? Porevit Inc. solves this problem by installing a high gloss dark brown stretch ceiling insert by Laqfoil. This insert also visually enlarges the space by reflecting it, dampens unwanted sound, and adds thermal insulation to the space.

This was a typical 50's era, dark, outdated house with low ceilings and prehistoric finishes. And, to top it all off, there was ONE pink bathroom on the main floor. ​ What did we change here? Let’s see… just about everything. We opened up the kitchen, added a large window above the sink. We installed new custom kitchen cabinets and an island. We created a multilevel ceiling for zone definition, and added various light fixtures to provide ambient, decorative and sufficient task lighting. With a nod to the shakers' wall stretching coatracks, the base of the coatracks is a square metal bar which is laser cut in a six-meter stretch. After this the hooks (which are 10 cm apart) are pulled out by hand. The hole the hook creates, allows you to screw the rack onto the wall. High gloss stretch ceiling in a living room!

Referencing this square footage as an internal courtyard might be a stretch. A more accurate description would perhaps be the awesome things that New Yorkers can do with the tiny spaces we have. The parameters of the project lend to its description. This Tribeca residential building’s shared amenity space and gym on the lower level opens up onto a 350 square foot space of brick walls and concrete pavers. The south wall of this space is made up by the terraces belonging to the residential units above and while the setting allows for minimal ambient light, each balcony looks down onto the shared space below. In order to provide visual interest from the gym and the overhead views, Blondie’s designers Sara Baerwald and Eva Vessio utilized Jay Scott’s rectangle containers lining the north wall as well as surrounding the utilities in the southwest corner. They then created 8 foot faux boxwood hedge on the north wall and the appropriate height to conceal the utilities. From below the hedge creates the feeling of a courtyard and from above it softens the view of the once barren space. Adding color and functionality, the concrete pavers were replaced with rubber tiles in a bright aqua. To play off of this color and add a unique level of visual impact, artist Chris Pearson designed and painted a multi-color prism mural. Primarily on the east wall and then stretching over the hedges to the south, the depth and dimension that this mural provides for the space is incredible. It is a testament to the successful solutions we conjure when thinking outside the box and allowing for unique site specific resolutions.
