This four-story townhome in the heart of old town Alexandria, was recently purchased by a family of four.
The outdated galley kitchen with confined spaces, lack of powder room on main level, dropped down ceiling, partition walls, small bathrooms, and the main level laundry were a few of the deficiencies this family wanted to resolve before moving in.
Starting with the top floor, we converted a small bedroom into a master suite, which has an outdoor deck with beautiful view of old town. We reconfigured the space to create a walk-in closet and another separate closet.
We took some space from the old closet and enlarged the master bath to include a bathtub and a walk-in shower. Double floating vanities and hidden toilet space were also added.
The addition of lighting and glass transoms allows light into staircase leading to the lower level.
On the third level is the perfect space for a girl’s bedroom. A new bathroom with walk-in shower and added space from hallway makes it possible to share this bathroom.
A stackable laundry space was added to the hallway, a few steps away from a new study with built in bookcase, French doors, and matching hardwood floors.
The main level was totally revamped. The walls were taken down, floors got built up to add extra insulation, new wide plank hardwood installed throughout, ceiling raised, and a new HVAC was added for three levels.
The storage closet under the steps was converted to a main level powder room, by relocating the electrical panel.
The new kitchen includes a large island with new plumbing for sink, dishwasher, and lots of storage placed in the center of this open kitchen. The south wall is complete with floor to ceiling cabinetry including a home for a new cooktop and stainless-steel range hood, covered with glass tile backsplash.
The dining room wall was taken down to combine the adjacent area with kitchen. The kitchen includes butler style cabinetry, wine fridge and glass cabinets for display. The old living room fireplace was torn down and revamped with a gas fireplace wrapped in stone.
Built-ins added on both ends of the living room gives floor to ceiling space provides ample display space for art. Plenty of lighting fixtures such as led lights, sconces and ceiling fans make this an immaculate remodel.
We added brick veneer on east wall to replicate the historic old character of old town homes.
The open floor plan with seamless wood floor and central kitchen has added warmth and with a desirable entertaining space.

The epitome of luxury living - an exquisite apartment that exudes unparalleled elegance and sophistication. This stunning residence showcases the masterful work of a visionary designer, Tamar Rand, where every element has been meticulously crafted to create an upscale haven unlike any other.
Upon stepping into this grand abode, you are immediately greeted by a traditional ambiance with a modern twist. Tamar Rand has ingeniously utilized every inch of space, transforming it into a seamless blend of modern traditionalism. The entrance floor boasts a charming foyer and hallway that beckon you into the heart of the home.
The kitchen, living room, and dining room converge into an open space, exuding a sense of freedom and fluidity. The dining table, an exquisite masterpiece, was born from the collaboration between a skilled carpenter and a visionary glass artist. This unique piece features a delicate balance of glass and intricate woodwork, marrying openness with the essence of traditional style.
Among the living quarters are two inviting bedrooms, each meticulously designed to offer comfort and luxury. The master bedroom is accompanied by a lavish bathroom that complements the overall opulence of the apartment. The main bathroom, shared by all, showcases Tamar’s attention to detail in every aspect of the home.
One of the most captivating features of this apartment lies below, in the basement, which has been transformed into a magical space. Descending the majestic staircase into the basement, you are greeted by a glamorous light fixture that dazzles like precious jewels, adding an extra touch of luxury to the space. This basement feels nothing like a typical underground area; it is a realm of wonder and imagination brought to life.
By utilizing the basement's potential, Tamar has created two expansive play areas, ensuring that fun and excitement abound in every corner. A cleverly installed artificial skylight, adorned with a breathtaking Barrisol stretched ceiling, mimics the vast expanse of the sky, granting an airy and open atmosphere to this lower level.
In addition to the play areas, the basement also houses a study and two additional bedrooms, each providing the utmost comfort and privacy. Tamar’s ingenuity has transformed this space into a flourishing hub of leisure and creativity.
The apartment's allure lies not only in its sumptuous aesthetics but also in the thoughtfulness that went into optimizing every aspect of its design. A hidden laundry closet in the hallway perfectly exemplifies this philosophy, combining functionality and aesthetics to create an unobtrusive yet efficient space for laundry needs.
This apartment is a true testament to the prowess of Tamar, whose custom furniture and meticulous eye for detail have transformed a mere shell into a work of art. This home stands as a true masterpiece, celebrating the beauty of tradition while embracing the comforts of modernity.

Our Austin studio decided to go bold with this project by ensuring that each space had a unique identity in the Mid-Century Modern style bathroom, butler's pantry, and mudroom. We covered the bathroom walls and flooring with stylish beige and yellow tile that was cleverly installed to look like two different patterns. The mint cabinet and pink vanity reflect the mid-century color palette. The stylish knobs and fittings add an extra splash of fun to the bathroom.
The butler's pantry is located right behind the kitchen and serves multiple functions like storage, a study area, and a bar. We went with a moody blue color for the cabinets and included a raw wood open shelf to give depth and warmth to the space. We went with some gorgeous artistic tiles that create a bold, intriguing look in the space.
In the mudroom, we used siding materials to create a shiplap effect to create warmth and texture – a homage to the classic Mid-Century Modern design. We used the same blue from the butler's pantry to create a cohesive effect. The large mint cabinets add a lighter touch to the space.

THEME Inspired by the Magic Tree House series of children’s books, this indoor tree house provides entertainment, fun and a place for children to read about or imagine adventures through time. A blue sky, green meadows, and distant matching beech trees recreate the magic of Jack and Annie’s Frog Creek, and help bring the characters from the series to life. FOCUS A floor armoire, ceiling swing and climbing rope give the structure a true tree house look and feel. A drop-down drawing and writing table, wheeled work table and recessed ceiling lights ensure the room can be used for more than play. The tree house has electric interior lighting, a window to the outdoors and a playful sliding shutter over a window to the room. The armoire forms a raised, nine-foot-wide play area, while a TV within one of the wall’s floor-to-ceiling cabinets — with a delightful sliding ladder — transforms the room into a family theater perfect for watching movies and holding Wii competitions. STORAGE The bottom of the drawing table is a magnetic chalk board that doubles as a display for children’s art works. The tree’s small niches are for parents’ shoes; the larger compartment stores children’s shoes and school bags. Books, games, toys, DVDs, Wii and other computer accessories are stored in the wall cabinets. The armoire contains two spacious drawers and four nifty hinged storage bins. A rack of handy “vegetable buckets” above the armoire stores crayons, scissors and other useful items. GROWTH The room easily adapts from playroom, to party room, to study room and even to bedroom, as the tree house easily accommodates a twin-size mattress. SAFETY The rungs and rails of the ladder, as well as the grab bars beside the tree house door are wrapped with easy-grip rope for safe climbing. The drawing table has spring-loaded hinges to help prevent it from dropping dangerously from the wall, and the table door has double sets of locks up top to ensure safety. The interior of each storage compartment is carpeted like the tree house floor to provide extra padding.
