In an unprecedented honor, Michael Merrill Design Studio submitted five spaces with every project taking first place distinction. These projects ranged in styles from stark contemporary to rich traditional and featured residential work as well as commercial work.

In this project we turned a 2 car garage into an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) in 2 Months!! After we finalized the floor plans and design, we submitted to the city for approval. in this unique garage we made it luxurious because we created a vaulted ceiling, we divided the kitchen/living room from the master bedroom. We installed French doors in the main entry and the master bedroom entry. We framed and installed a large bay window in the kitchen. we added 2 mini split air conditioning (One in the master and one in the living room) we added a separated electric panel box just for the unit with its own meter. We created a private entry to the unit with it's own vinyl gate and we closed it at the end of the unit with another vinyl gate and we made tile on the walkway.

Quax loves contemporary design and with the Havana room the sleek line and solid wood get a place in the range, confirming its place on the international design scene. Tested by internationally recognized bodies on EN-716 for the beds and EN-12221 for the changing tables and with long-term use in mind. The metal base is finished with a black powder coating. The upper structures are a mix of lacquered and solid wood panels. The charm of solid wood is reflected in its pristine patina and is the guarantee of a natural product that over time becomes increasingly unique and valuable. A contribution that should not be underestimated to the natural and the cozy interior, a caress for the senses. Depending on the tree’s habitat, color differences are possible and proof of its essence. At Quax we use sustainable materials. All the furniture boards meet the strict E1 standard on formaldehyde emissions. We support durable forestry and ask our suppliers to submit the PEFC and FSC certificates. Special care also goes to the furniture fittings. Only reputable suppliers provide us with, among others, quality sliders for the drawers and reliable connecting techniques. The paint finish is another point of attention, we only work with international quality supplierssuch as Akzo Nobel and no local producers. All producers are responsible for the certificates of their products, for example EN 71-3 with attention for the migration of harmful elements. Design also plays an important role in the business philosophy of Quax. In the Havana room the bars are milled out in the Mdf board, which does not only contribute to the fancy nature of this range but also to the sturdiness of the sideframes, not comparable to traditional bars. DESIGN CHALLENGES ADDRESSED: To anyone who may be reading this project overview, I do hope you'll have the opportunity to have a look at the 'before' photo of this space. It's quite a transformation! Our homeowners purchased their condo at the beach several years ago. As shown in the 'before' photo, at the time, their family room was a dark and dated space with unsightly paneled walls, heavy faux ceiling beams and odds and ends for furniture. Everything felt cramped and cluttered throughout the condo, especially their family room. The client's vision was for an airy and relaxed coastal vibe for their 'place at the beach'. DESIGN SOLUTIONS PROVIDED: The entire condo was taken down to stud. The faux beams were edited out and the ceiling raised. The heavy out-dated paneling was removed and replaced with fresh clean walls that were painted in a calming creamy sand tone throughout the entire condo. The existing dark and gloomy furniture was replaced with stylish updated pieces. Great thought was given to the size, scale and textiles used. The sofa and loveseat, done in a softly textured herring boned pattern, was the perfect choice. It's cremey toned easy care fabric created a 'pet friendly' environment for the clients. The homeowners have two dogs and a cat who love a visit to the beach as much as their 'humans'. Worn out window treatments were replaced with fresh custom draperies in a playful botanical print featuring tones of kiwi, leaf green and cerulean blue. A special 'solar friendly' lining was used to tame the harmful rays of direct sun. A variety of special curated accents were added to the room. The richly textured rug, round coffee table with an organic feel, comfy pillows and a few special art pieces all helped to complete this space. The overall effect of the renovation was quite dramatic and the clients were thrilled with the results. This family room went from being dark and dated to light and airy and is now a space that is inviting and relaxing which perfectly suits the homeowner's coastal lifestyle.
