FullerHouse Construction Project: Arapahoe Ridge, Boulder CO whole house remodel Our clients’ modest, 2,100 SF 1960’s Ranch had received only a few minor cosmetic upgrades since its original construction. And given a need for more space and a desire to stay in their neighborhood – the prime Arapahoe Ridge neighborhood of Boulder – our clients knew their home was due for a major renovation. By the time DAJ Designs of Louisville had completed drawings, it was clear that very little of the original house was going to remain the same. To create the space and configuration they desired, the first goal was to add a 2nd story, allocated solely for the new Master Suite, with its own private Balcony. But to create additional space needed for the Kitchen and walk-in pantry, we also pushed out into the original Garage footprint, subsequently extending the Garage to create room for 3+ vehicles. We also reworked nearly every other interior partition wall on the main floor to accommodate a spacious Great Room, 2 kids’ bedrooms, an Office, 2 bathrooms, and a dedicated Laundry room. With clean white Craftsman details for the Exterior and interior trim and doors, natural granite counters, glass tiles, and creamy white Shaker-style cabinetry, our clients’ good taste added a timeless warmth to their now larger (3,000 SF) and more functional home.

Bestlite has been in continuous production since 1930. Winston Churchill is numbered amongst its many famous users. The Bestlite design was conceived by Robert Dudley Best who was highly influenced by the Bauhaus, a school in Germany that merged practical crafts with the fine arts and became famous for the design concept that it publicized and taught. Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design and industrial design and Bauhaus style became one of the most influential forces behind Modernist architecture and modern design. Eighty years on, the Bestlite design stays close to its industrial roots and true to its original design. The client's original wooden deck, along with its aging patio cover, had deteriorated and was in need of replacement. The client's objective was to have a low-maintenance deck without a cover while retaining the existing railing. To begin, we carefully dismantled the old deck and patio cover, clearing the way for the upcoming construction. Following this, we proceeded to install sturdy cement footings to establish a reliable base for the new deck. The framework for the deck was meticulously crafted using robust 4x6 pressure-treated lumber, ensuring durability and stability. Subsequently, we laid down 2x6 joists on top of this framework, providing essential support for the upcoming decking material. To safeguard against moisture and enhance the longevity of the deck, we meticulously applied rubber flashing atop the joists. This protective layer serves to prevent water damage and reinforce the structural integrity of the deck. For the decking itself, we selected and expertly installed Trex, a top-quality composite decking material known for its low maintenance and long-lasting performance. Additionally, the existing railing was carefully refurbished and reinstalled, seamlessly integrating it with the new deck. Finally, we completed the project by installing the fascia, which not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the deck but also conceals the ends of the deck boards and joists, contributing to a polished and finished look. Throughout the entire process, we diligently adhered to local building codes and regulations, ensuring that the final result met the client's desires while delivering a high standard of construction and craftsmanship.

Subsequent additions are covered with living green walls to deemphasize stylistic conflicts imposed on a 1940’s Tudor and become backdrop surrounding a kitchen addition. On the interior, further added architectural inconsistencies are edited away, and the language of the Tudor’s original reclaimed integrity is referenced for the addition. Sympathetic to the home, windows and doors remain untrimmed and stark plaster walls contrast the original black metal windows. Sharp black elements contrast fields of white. With a ceiling pitch matching the existing and chiseled dormers, a stark ceiling hovers over the kitchen space referencing the existing homes plaster walls. Grid members in windows and on saw scored paneled walls and cabinetry mirror the machine age windows as do exposed steel beams. The exaggerated white field is pierced by an equally exaggerated 13 foot black steel tower that references the existing homes steel door and window members. Glass shelves in the tower further the window parallel. Even though it held enough dinner and glassware for eight, its thin members and transparent shelves defy its massive nature, allow light to flow through it and afford the kitchen open views and the feeling of continuous space. The full glass at the end of the kitchen reveres a grouping of 50 year old Hemlocks. At the opposite end, a window close to the peak looks up to a green roof.

Time had stood still at this 1970s ranch in Armonk when the owners invited us to collaborate with them to transform it into a modern, light-filled home for their young family. The budget was lean, so economy was a primary consideration for every design decision. The challenge was to identify the modest home’s virtues – vaulted ceilings and a lovely backyard – and accentuate them by strategically optimizing available funds. We were tasked with rectifying a dysfunctional interior stair, connecting to the outdoors with new large windows, and updating the exterior. We focused our attention on a finite set of architectural moves which would have the biggest impact and improve our clients’ daily experience of the home. Detailing was kept simple, using common grade materials and standard components. All exterior walls were revamped with new windows and siding. Although these materials were not particularly costly, thoughtful layout of boards, battens, and openings produced a cohesive, rigorous composition at each facade. Since the budget would not cover the homeowners’ complete wish list, some items were bracketed for subsequent phases. The challenge was to establish a framework that would allow future work – including a new roof and kitchen renovation – to proceed smoothly. The homeowners, both scientists, were enthusiastic collaborators, contributing their outstanding design sensibilities to selection of fixtures and finishes. Construction ended just in time for the arrival of their baby – and with that, the transformation of their family home was complete.

By annexing an unused portion of the original garage into the kitchen, we were able to open up the room considerably, improve the home's energy efficiency, and also introduce loads of natural light to the first floor. In particular, we replaced a very old boiler and water heater, and subsequently removed the chimney that originally served them. This allowed us to then install gable windows in the old garage area, which can be seen here above the double stoves.
