Menzel gets her hands dirty by swinging a sledgehammer, operating an electric hand saw and removing storage bins. “I didn’t know they get as down and dirty as they do,” Menzel commented. “I also didn’t know they were gonna have me do so much!” Menzel also helped choose the tile, cabinets, hardware, flooring and the overall color palette.

Small Kitchens in traditional older homes present an opportunity for the designer and cabinet maker. Function, space and ease in accommodating a guest or two represent a few of the necessary considerations. Careful planning while creating custom features will ensure a useful kitchen in harmony with contemporary living. Establishing upper cabinets at the ceiling height extends storage while glass doors at the bar area continues to push open the kitchen. By placing the bar surface at the same height as the counter we’ve established an unbroken line to further increase the sense of space. Designing valence and header panels over the window in the same style as the kitchen's doors provides continuity to this custom kitchen and to the history of the home.
The home was built in the 1920's in an urban Virginia environment. As was so often the case in the appointments of the home the kitchen was given little space and short attention to design. Opening the kitchen to a hall space with careful attention to simple but functional design enabled a successful arrangement serving the modern lifestyle.
Landis Architects | BuildersWe designed and built this new kitchen as part of a main floor renovation of this 1891 rowhouse. The kitchen and main floor open plan reflect the homeowner’s contemporary taste, but with a nod to the historic aspect of the home. The clients were especially delighted with our success in achieving a “light and airy” feel.
The client wanted to open up the entire floor to increase the amount of natural light that flowed into the main floor of this rowhouse. He also wanted a visual connection from the front entry to the back door. The new kitchen reflects his contemporary style.
We flipped the original kitchen and dining room, and removed the walls to make the kitchen central to the floor plan. Moving the original kitchen from the back room to a central location in the floorplan allowed us to:
• Place all the storage and appliances on a party wall where no windows would be obscured.
• Increase the size of the kitchen and provide better flow for entertaining
• Increase natural light by doubling the size of the back window and installing two new windows. A new full-light rear door also allows natural light to flow into the space.
The client did not want access from the main floor to the basement apartment, so we closed off the stairs and turned the space into closets. We created closets with hidden doors with sass hinges and touch latches.

Citadelle opened up space in her home for Ali while she went on auditions. So years later, Ali knew it was time to give back in a big way. “Her friendship has been such a gift” said Ali. “I was supposed to stay there for two weeks and it ended up being a year.”
With the help of Drew and Jonathan Scott, Ali was determined to update the entire lower level of Citadelle’s home inside and out and making these spaces as entertainment-friendly as possible for the whole family, including Citadelle’s husband and kids, to enjoy. The multipurpose downstairs basement makeover included turning the family room into a classy lounge with a built in bar, removing the basic stand up shower and replacing it with a luxurious spa tub with stone tiles and converting the guest bedroom into “an office by day and bedroom by night” courtesy of a hidden pull down Murphy bed.
All Weather Series 7000 French Swing Doors extend and connect the indoor lounge area to the new outdoor living spaces. The ultimate backyard includes a stylish fireplace, white pergola, outdoor seating and dining area, an outdoor kitchen/grill and new turf for the yard and play structure areas. THE PROPERTY BROTHERS also painted the entire house white with black trim, leveled the backyard and basically doubled the livable square footage of the home. Check out the PROJECT PHOTOS here.

UserAll Weather teamed up with the Property Brothers and Queen of Broadway Idina Menzel on this week’s episode of HGTV’s hit show CELEBRTIY IOU. In the Idina Menzel’s Slam Dunk Reno episode, Idina pivots from her award-winning stage, film and music success to give back and surprise her good friend and son’s basketball coach James, by transforming his detached garage into a dedicated office and athletic retreat.
James Hunt founded Culture Run, a youth basketball program that gives kids the skills to succeed in both basketball and life. With IDINA MENZEL’S surprise renovation, James is one step closer to running a centralized training facility and headquarters where kids can drop by for counseling, basketball tips, and more.
When the PROPERTY BROTHERS meet up with Idina to demo the garage, they involve her in every step. Menzel gets her hands dirty by swinging a sledgehammer, operating an electric hand saw and removing storage bins. “I didn’t know they get as down and dirty as they do,” Menzel commented. “I also didn’t know they were gonna have me do so much!” Menzel also helped choose the tile, cabinets, hardware, flooring and the overall color palette.
All the effort was worthwhile because Menzel was able to surprise James with the basketball hangout and showstopping of his dreams. Interiors by the Sewing RoomThe original door had years and years of cracking paint. We convinced the owner to re-use the old closet door instead, and with a little elbow grease to rework the hinges and lock set, success! It looks beautiful. All window and door trim was custom to match the original.

FENCE DEPOT INSTALLERS OF MIAMI LLCArmando called us for a free estimate, we passed by and shortly got back to him with a quote. We had to remove a very old pre-existing wood fence. We installed a full privacy wood-with frame style fence made with PT wood. We added top crown wood caps to make it look pretty. For no additional cost we converted his double swing doors on the left side of the house into a rolling gate which I recommend since he mentioned buying a boat was next on his todo list (must be nice right haha). You can also see his entrance close to the concrete which is his pedestrian swing door. On the right side we added two 6 foot swing doors with heavy duty hinges. (I always highly recommend for longevity). Overall it was a success and Armando recommended his good friend Gladis which we will be starting next week. Stay posted for her project outcome.
