Greenwich Village, NYC terrace garden. In the heart of the West Village, this 10 x 30 terrace is meant to evoke the client’s passion for a bucolic homestead on a ranch. The space overlooks a courtyard and is surrounded by other luxury condos. Thus privacy was a key component for the client, which is achieved by the planting of switchgrass along the perimeter — evoking the prairie grassland. Two Serviceberry trees (Amelanchier canadensis) create additional privacy, their perfect alignment representative of a farmstead orchard, with the rustic pergola providing either structure or hidden sanctuary (by closure of the roman shade) for al fresco dining, cocktails and hammock lounging. In this new planting, native "Northwind" switchgrass screens a busy four-lane road, backed by native shrubs and trees. Although most of the plants are deciduous, the grasses screen in the winter; by the time they are cut back, the trees and shrubs have leafed out. Also shown here: viburnums, musclewood, witchhazel, "Rising Sun" redbud, and "High Shoals" E. red cedar. "Standing Ovation" little bluestem and purple coneflower are in the foreground. Three existing dwarf arborvitae can bee seen backing the planting.

Xeric landscape designed and built by Southern Landscape. This Austin homeowner reduced their turf area by over 17,000 square feet, reducing water consumption and maintenance. The remaining turf areas were required for the septic leach field. Limestone retaining walls with leuders caps control erosion. The plant palette contains lantana, plumbago, various grasses, and yuccas, all chosen for their specific water usage appropriate to the area. Landscape lighting was also added to highlight the beauty of this large xeriscape.
