This extensive renovation designed by Eric Rawlings, AIA, LEED AP and built by Arlene Dean, completely transforms the look of the original structure. The main source of inspiration for the new design came from Greene & Greene’s Gamble House, which is considered by many as the pinnacle of the original turn of the century Craftsman Style Homes. Distinctive features from that style include the use of exposed timber framing, low pitched roof forms with large overhangs, gangs of windows, and extensive built-in furniture. We removed the front porch brick addition on the right side of the original house and reused about 90% of the original floor system along with more than 50% of the original walls. The original garage was converted into a pool house and the new garage was built in front of it. The upper level terrace on the front of the house serves a dual purpose as a carport while also creating a signature display of complex exposed timber frame construction synonymous with the Craftsman Style of Greene & Greene. The roof structure is made of 4x8 rafters about 5ft apart and 2x6 tongue and groove decking which creates an exposed wood ceiling finish as well as being the structural roof deck. This Artcraft kitchen cabinetry is a stunning combination of cool, white paint and warm, beautiful Cumaru veneers. Great attention was given to keep all components aligned with each other giving a clean contemporary feel. The SubZero refrigerator features Cumaru paneling that is completely flush with the cabinetry as is the paneling on the Bosch dishwasher. The Wolf ovens are “recessed” into the face of the oven cabinet, keeping the ovens flush with the cabinet faces. All of the base cabinetry is finished in the Cumaru veneers, including the back side of the island which gives the client a lot of extra storage in the Dining room. The Bar cabinetry is also a combination of white paint and Cumaru veneers. The Perlick wine coolers are covered in Cumaru décor panels. When it came to designing my picnic basket tableau, it was important that its design represent the values and ideologies at the core of Julie Schuster Design Studio. I chose the theme ‘Zen Garden’ because of my interest and practice in Feng Shui. I love the idea of the balance of the elements being synonymous with the idea of a balanced meal.

Lavish and splendidly striking, the De Medici Ice Oval vessel- sink, is a sculptural masterpiece majestically formed into an elegant work of art. This vessel sink, perfect and pristine, like a block of ice that has been slowly chipped away to reveal its true beauty. This luxury vessel-sink makes an intense statement all on its own, and though it will compliment a contemporary style best, it will also enhance a traditional design setting. Made out of luxurious crystal based material enhanced with its true color. De Medici Ice Oval is available in designer inspired color: Transparent. This luxury vessel-sink represents the fashion of luxury synonymous with sophistication to your bath or powder room. This single level home features three bedrooms, 2 1/2 half baths, and seamless integration with the outdoor making the home "live larger than it is". A private Courtyard connects two wings of private spaces: the entry and the rear yard which boasts panoramic ocean views of both Catalina and San Clemente islands. A vew deck that flows directly out from the grat room via the 24' of stack-back doors completes the indoor-outdoor connection. Compromising nothing in her selection of materials, the ensemble offers several brands synonymous with clean living and green sensibilities as well as the latest smart-home features. This includes the industry's most green building parts (solar set-up) all which renders the home both ecologically and technologically.

With a total of 280 miles of protective sidewalk scaffolding in front of close to 8,000 buildings in New York City, the otherwise industrial material has become synonymous with the identity and architectural experience of the city. Based on the client’s unlimited need for storage, the repurposed scaffold displays help give prominence to the duality of a brand made up of New York City and fresh ingredients.
