This lower level renovation started out as a simple project. The family wanted to install a home theater in their unfinished basement. Initially it was only going to be a space with a home theater where they could occasionally watch a movie or a sporting event. Once the theater design was complete, the clients embraced the elegance of the custom cherry wood cabinetry, columns and wainscoting. In addition, by having all of the audio video components hidden out of sight, the room would have a serene, peaceful ambience. The theater design enticed the clients to finish off the rest of the basement. A bar area was designed with an antique bar, and a lounge area with a fireplace was also constructed. As the layout evolved and the placement of the bar was resolved a perfect area for a wine cellar became evident. Once the clients realized how comfortable the space would be, they understood that they would probably be spending more time in the basement than they originally anticipated. This thought led them to want two large flat panel TVs on the walls in the bar area so they could watch several events at the same time. They love the theater. The 110” screen and quality audio video system is a constant source of entertainment for the entire family. They use the entire basement frequently as a gathering point for family and friends.

Gramophone and its Design & Build team worked together to design and create this elegant but casual theater, inspired by and evolved from the aesthetics of the client's yacht. Black mohair and alligator leather textures along with vintage touches set this space apart from others considered off the shelf. To keep the space neat, the projector was hidden away in a projector room behind the theater, while components were nestled away in a rack tower. A seaside community centred around the local wharf. The village is home to a general store, outfitter, post office, a handful of very tasty cafes, two pubs, and a smattering of small operations aimed at servicing visitors to the great outdoors. SCALA Participated in this exiting Tri-point properties Project, working along with other consultants on the Project Management, Design Coordination, and Construction Management. The Villages of Loreto Bay were constructed of adobe, compressed earth blocks that were a traditional building material. The Company evolved to become the world’s largest user of Rastra, a recycled styrofoam and concrete system which cut heating and cooling costs by 60%”. All designed in courtyard-style architecture. The owners of this property, located in the Perrinville neighborhood of Edmonds, came to H2D with a vision to design a large addition and attached garage for their home. The project evolved and grew into a partial rebuild of the home, including the new large addition. The stunning waterfront property contained a variety of critical areas which were a challenge to work with, not only in design, but also during construction. For planning purposes, the design was required to conform with the restrictions from a stream, steep slope, and the Puget Sound shoreline, as well as all the associated buffers. During construction, the builders had the challenge to bring all the materials and equipment over the small bridge that crossed the on-site stream in order to access the site and minimize their disturbance of the site due to the stream and shoreline conditions. The existing foundation and main floor system were salvaged and reused. The main floor walls were rebuilt to accommodate the new modern double shed roofline utilizing SIPS panels over exposed wood beams. A new large addition was added to create a new two-car garage at the lower floor and large primary suite at the main floor. The main floor of the home is designed with large windows and doors connecting to the outdoors and sweeping views of the Puget Sound. It feels appropriately sized for its site and is well detailed. It’s by far the best of the Shingle Style submittals.” The project is a new construction of a family compound consisting of two new houses and associated site development along South Beach. Due to the topography of the nearby dunes, the living spaces of the main and guest houses were located on the second floor in order to gain the panoramic views of the ocean and extended coastline beyond. The challenge was to create a shingle-style island vernacular architecture that did not reflect the upside-down nature of the primary living space. The inspiration was based on the desire to take a large program and break it into smaller architectural elements based on the idea that the homes could have originally been constructed in the 1920s or 1930s and then added onto over time. This concept of "implied history" is one that creates a legacy of a seaside architecture from the rich history of New England’s past, yet has evolved into how people want to live today. The Marvin products, with their hurricane-resistant capabilities, were a clear choice based on this locale. The use of the folding door systems allowed for the ease of flow from indoor to outdoor spaces in a timeless way.

We altered a master bathroom to create a spa like accessible bathroom. The toilet was relocated from it’s tight space to the right of the vanity, where a linen closet used to be, allowed for proper clearance and bar placement. One of the grab bars folds up when not in use. The former toilet area became a beautiful barrier free shower with an infinity drain along the far wall. The shower has a rain head and a Kohler Artifacts hand shower. The six shower spray heads are hooked to a thermostatic valve controlled by software that can be set via an app or control pad. It was a challenge to fit the multiple shower heads’ plumbing, the thermostatic valve box and it’s electrical in the walls with the backer the multiple grab bars required. We had to coordinate the subcontractors in this area so the backer was not disturbed and all of the systems had the space they needed. The tile in the shower has two accents, a chair rail tile over an ornate accent tile. Three niches in the wall have the quartz countertop material as the shelf. To accommodate the infinity drain, the shower floor has additional backer to support the weight of an occupied wheelchair. We removed the existing shower and installed a SanSpa wheelchair transfer bathtub with air massage. The linen closet hides the shower plumbing access. The molding at the top of the cabinet hides the wifi receiver that is needed for the shower controls. A large ornate mirror hangs at an angle above the vanity so the homeowner can be seated and use the mirror. The stunning statement countertop is Avalanche quartz from Pental. This remodel was a challenge to craft the structure behind the beauty, that allowed a master bath to evolve into a completely wheelchair accessible spa retreat.

This Winchester, MA backyard deck project reimagines an outdated patio into a stylish and functional outdoor living retreat. The gallery features a single “before” image of the existing patio alongside a series of detailed design renderings that illustrate the transformation. Our design includes durable composite decking, sleek cable railings, and custom built-in seating to maximize comfort and usability. This new home in Westborough, MA provides 2,800 sq. ft. of living space, with an open first floor plan and multi-tiered second floor designed to bring in abundant natural light and capture views of the meadow to the rear. The design evolved from plans provided by the owners, and was adapted to the unique features of the site. We were also thrilled to help the owners pursue their desired “net zero energy” goal. Careful air-sealing, insulation levels at R-60 in the roof and R-32 in walls, efficient HVAC equipment, and a 7-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array qualified the house for a HERS rating of 22 and Energy Star Tier 3 certification. Low-VOC finishes, adhesives, and other materials were selected and an HVAC system designed to optimize indoor air quality for healthy living. Custom detailing was also a major focus of the interior design, including unique maple and cherry cabinetry and millwork.
