Retired school teacher and firefighter empty nesters; now was their time. They gave to their community and put their kids first. Gut the old kitchen and removed the wall to the dining room for an open concept. This created a more spacious, functional and brighter kitchen that the two of them could enjoy together. Per owner my old kitchen was a “one butt kitchen” that was in the middle of the thoroughfare of the home. Rearranging and combining the kitchen and dining room eliminated the bottleneck and “one butt kitchen”. Classic Kraftmaid full overlay maple cabinets and luxury vinyl plank flooring with a rustic hardwood look and feel. Mexican Talavera tile back splash and dale tiffany ceiling lights adds bright colors and class to this homeowner's Kitchen Remodel.

Nestled on the shores of Coon Lake in Anoka County, this modest 1970s two-story was purchased by the son of owner John Murphy as a home to grow into. Ben Murphy, wife and teacher Lisa Murphy, fully accepted the challenge of remodeling this home with of course lots of help from Murphy Bros. Design| Build | Remodel. “I think every homeowner that accepts the remodeling challenge feels at some point they have bitten off a bit more than they bargained for,” explains Ben Murphy, now the president of the company. “But that’s just the creative nature of remodeling. I would say I have an even better understanding of what homeowners go through now that I’ve done the exterior siding, insulation, laundry, entryway, bedrooms, fireplace, kitchen, and dining room not to mention a new interior hand-crafted custom ceiling.”

By making better use of its sloped room and finding a bit of added space in an adjacent attic, the new design can truly be called a master bathroom. The homeowner’s wish list included a large shower, a soaking tub and a long vanity with two sinks. With a built-in shower bench, storage niches, and a frameless glass enclosure, the new shower transformed the space. The soaker tub and judicious use of multi-colored tile emphasizes the contemporary flair the design has achieved. The client greatly enjoys her dream bathroom. She has achieved her ultimate goal of large, usable bathroom with lots of amenities.

The best features of this loft were formerly obscured by its worst. While the apartment has a rich history—it’s located in a former bike factory, it lacked a cohesive floor plan that allowed any substantive living space. A retired teacher rented out the loft for 10 years before an unexpected fire in a lower apartment necessitated a full building overhaul. He jumped at the chance to renovate the apartment and asked InSitu to design a remodel to improve how it functioned and elevate the interior. We created a plan that reorganizes the kitchen and dining spaces, integrates abundant storage, and weaves in an understated material palette that better highlights the space’s cool industrial character.
