The original Trex railing was technically removed and modified to fit back into the new portico’s posts wrapped with a custom decorative trim configuration. The cover’s ceiling contains four new recessed can lights on a dimmer switch along with a ceiling fan for those warm evenings.

The conversion of this iconic American barn into a Writer’s Studio was conceived of as a tranquil retreat with natural light and lush views to stimulate inspiration for both husband and wife. Originally used as a garage with two horse stalls, the existing stick framed structure provided a loft with ideal space and orientation for a secluded studio. Signature barn features were maintained and enhanced such as horizontal siding, trim, large barn doors, cupola, roof overhangs, and framing. New features added to compliment the contextual significance and sustainability aspect of the project were reclaimed lumber from a razed barn used as flooring, driftwood retrieved from the shores of the Hudson River used for trim, and distressing / wearing new wood finishes creating an aged look. Along with the efforts for maintaining the historic character of the barn, modern elements were also incorporated into the design to provide a more current ensemble based on its new use. Elements such a light fixtures, window configurations, plumbing fixtures and appliances were all modernized to appropriately represent the present way of life.

The chaise lounge chairs are on powder-coated aluminum frames with Batylene mesh outdoor technical fabric. The two club chairs are an all-weather wicker intricately hand woven in a checkerboard pattern. The palms that flank the tanning ledge are integrated into the pool surround. Great design is in the details, and this technical elevation of the Herring Residence powder room highlights the rigorous planning behind our moody, modern aesthetic. To achieve the seamless "floating" effect of the vanity, we specified an exact 15-inch clearance from the floor, integrated with subtle under-cabinet LED lighting to enhance the room’s ambient glow. The drawing showcases the intentional balance between the expansive 43.5" x 84" plate glass mirror and the dramatic "Specialty Finish" 3D-textured wall. By mapping out the exact placement of the CF-3 cabinetry finish and the high-profile back-to-wall toilet, Morehouse Crafted Interiors ensures that every fixture aligns perfectly with the architectural grid of the space. This level of technical oversight is what allows our boldest creative visions to become functional realities.

Atherton has many large substantial homes - our clients purchased an existing home on a one acre flag-shaped lot and asked us to design a new dream home for them. The result is a new 7,000 square foot four-building complex consisting of the main house, six-car garage with two car lifts, pool house with a full one bedroom residence inside, and a separate home office /work out gym studio building. A fifty-foot swimming pool was also created with fully landscaped yards. Given the rectangular shape of the lot, it was decided to angle the house to incoming visitors slightly so as to more dramatically present itself. The house became a classic u-shaped home but Feng Shui design principals were employed directing the placement of the pool house to better contain the energy flow on the site. The main house entry door is then aligned with a special Japanese red maple at the end of a long visual axis at the rear of the site. These angles and alignments set up everything else about the house design and layout, and views from various rooms allow you to see into virtually every space tracking movements of others in the home. The residence is simply divided into two wings of public use, kitchen and family room, and the other wing of bedrooms, connected by the living and dining great room. Function drove the exterior form of windows and solid walls with a line of clerestory windows which bring light into the middle of the large home. Extensive sun shadow studies with 3D tree modeling led to the unorthodox placement of the pool to the north of the home, but tree shadow tracking showed this to be the sunniest area during the entire year. Sustainable measures included a full 7.1kW solar photovoltaic array technically making the house off the grid, and arranged so that no panels are visible from the property. A large 16,000 gallon rainwater catchment system consisting of tanks buried below grade was installed. The home is California GreenPoint rated and also features sealed roof soffits and a sealed crawlspace without the usual venting. A whole house computer automation system with server room was installed as well. Heating and cooling utilize hot water radiant heated concrete and wood floors supplemented by heat pump generated heating and cooling. The key was for the design not to compete with either. Strokes of three types of grass and textural interest and privacy while not distracting you from the main focus of the garden: the view!

CHAMPAGNE HOUR Soft neutrals, gilded light and quiet glamour. DESIGN DESCRIPTION This home is wrapped in a soft palette of champagne, taupe and ivory, layered with shimmering texture and gilded detail. In the living room, a cream camelback sofa, a nailhead wingback chair and a sculptural leather ottoman rest on a hide rug, beneath a cluster of gold ring mirrors and a fretwork console. The sitting room pairs a tufted sofa and brass coffee table with a quartet of antique map prints. In the dining room, a tiered shell chandelier glows above a glass-topped table with a gilded base, reflected in an oversized floor mirror. The family room centres on a limestone fireplace crowned by gold sunburst discs, with a mirrored bar cart adding sparkle. Upstairs, the bedroom is a serene retreat of damask walls, a tufted wingback bed, mirrored nightstands and pooling gold silk drapery. Every room glows with understated luxury.
