We replaced wood single pane windows with operable insulated fiberglass windows that were in some places larger than the original. Where wall heights did not allow room for wood headers, we used steel. All of the original portion of the house was sprayed with high density foam, both for thermal performance and to discourage the many rodents that had moved into the cavities from coming back. The homeowner - an internationally acclaimed Winery Owner and Vintner, worked directly with our team to properly store their incredible wine collection of over 3500 bottles. With an unbelievable collection of First Growth Bordeaux s, Burgundy Domaine de la Romanee Conti s, Cult Napa Cabernets, and more, the homeowner wanted the utmost care and expertise in creating an environment perfectly designed to store and age their wines gracefully. The team at Vintage Cellars was able to work with the client intimately, talking through and understanding this unique collection of splits, 750’s, and large format bottles from the ground up, creating a completely custom wine racking system to perfectly meet all wants and needs. The wine racking is a mixture of custom unfinished black walnut cabinetry, coupled with a showstopping bronze racking showpiece viewable through the kitchen picture window. Many wine racks are backlit with LED lighting and fully illuminated panels to add extra pop. The cellar also features space for original wooden case storage, coved trays for both standard and magnum sized bottles, custom enclaves for larger bottles, and bread boards throughout for entertaining. The entire cellar is large enough to store the collection with room to grow - upwards of 250 square feet complete with two redundant whisperkool 4000 btu ceiling mount wine cellar cooling systems, and integrated humidification features. DESIGN + INNOVATION: Award of Excellence and GREEN DESIGN CITATION PROJECT: RE_VIEW CLIENT: CMU School of Architecture, CMU BxA Staff, Bloomfield Garfield Corporation ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Urban Design Build Studio DESCRIPTION: Due to three major factors – vacancy, view, and affordability – Pittsburgh’s housing situation is ripe with the opportunity to leverage privileged views and increase thermal performance. The RE_VIEW wall system was designed to create expansive views, improve energy efficiency, and bring aesthetic features that all add to the market value of a home while being easily replicable. Features such as prefabricated modules, high density insulation, and an in-depth understanding of construction and installation methods were all considered to evaluate the effectiveness of the RE_VIEW system. JURY COMMENTS: The jury appreciated how the project encompasses urban analysis, architectural detail, sustainability, and also, ideas about fabrication while tying them together in a convincing way. This purposeful innovation to makes existing houses more useable and livable. The jury also awarded the Green Design Citation to the project because it can repurpose and bring new value to existing housing, offering an alternative to demolition and replacement.

This small community of 10 single family dwellings was designed to meet all 20 Imperatives of the Living Building Challenge. Energy efficient construction, lighting and appliances are combined with photovoltaic and solar thermal collectors to provide at least 105% of all power required by the residents. The form and density of dwellings are optimized to meet all potable water needs through an innovative rainwater collection, storage and filtration system. Graywater and onsite composting feed the permaculture-inspired landscape of community gardens and fruit trees, fostering a healthy sense of community and empowerment for the residents. The power, water, waste and urban agricultural elements are part of the site’s architectural expression, making the life-sustaining systems transparent to residents, neighbors and visitors. This reinforces the educational intent of Urban Grapevine as an integral part of a citywide network of sustainable community gardens.
