This shot beautifully captures all of the different materials used in the staircase from the entry way to the upper floors and guest quarters. The steps are made of kiln dried fir beams from the Oregon Coast, each beam was a free of heart center cut. The railing was built in place to make it look as though it was all on continuous piece. The steps to the third floor office in the top left of the picture are floating and held in place with metal support in the grinder finish. The flooring in the entry way is 2'x3' tiles of Pennsylvania Bluestone. High ceilings and light finishes keep things bright and airy and help bounce all the natural light flooding in from the large picture windows. Can we talk about that view?! We opted for black window trim to frame off the view just like a piece of art. Forgoing wood trim around the windows keeps this look clean and modern and lends to this effect. We could look at it all day long.

Benjamin Benschneider A Seattle family was expecting their third child and hoping to find space for an additional bedroom within their existing one-story home. A small second floor addition was considered but the cost and disruption to the family living space presented serious drawbacks. A new detached garage and DADU (Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit), to be located in the backyard, was proposed to free up the existing basement garage for the new bedroom. The new building is modest and simple, designed with a scale and character to complement the existing house and neighborhood.

This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. The glass bowl was made in the glass studio owned by the owner which is adjacent to the residence. The mirror is a repurposed window. The door is repurposed from a boarding house. George Mendel
