Inspiration for a large transitional home design remodel in San Francisco

The image shows the elevated garden as seen from the dining room. We installed a lot of steel in order to blow through a brick wall and fireplace and open the kitchen to this secret garden. We considered excavating the yard down to floor level, but decided that was excessive. The raised courtyard welcomes you to curl up on the window seat and nestle into the landscape.

The clients for this project wanted a home with a traditional feel that fit the local aesthetic, but with a contemporary flare. The gabled forms and materials call back, while the exaggerated knee-braces and large banks of windows lend a little modernity. With a northerly exposure towards the lake the design opens up to the view without having concerns about excessive solar gain. A personal touch was added by the client fabricating the brackets for the post and beam connections.

The design for the dining room was inspired by the selected Meroni Francesca furnishings. The wall treatment, chair rail, and wainscoting all echo decorative flourishes and Trompe L’oeil found in the table and cabinetry. The chandelier is Schonbek; the rug is an antique Tabriz with broad color variation complimenting the white and honey onyx floor.

Delightful 1930's home on the parkway needed a major kitchen remodel which lead to expanding the sunroom and opening them up to each other. Above a master bedroom and bath were added to make this home live larger than it's square footage would bely.
