The millwork in this entry foyer, which warms and enriches the entire space, is spectacular yet subtle with architecturally interesting shadow boxes, crown molding, and base molding. The double doors and sidelights, along with lattice-trimmed transoms and high windows, allow natural illumination to brighten both the first and second floors. Walnut flooring laid on the diagonal with surrounding detail smoothly separates the entry from the dining room.

This cozy gathering space in the heart of Davis, CA takes cues from traditional millwork concepts done in a contemporary way.
Accented with light taupe, the grid panel design on the walls adds dimension to the otherwise flat surfaces. A brighter white above celebrates the room’s high ceilings, offering a sense of expanded vertical space and deeper relaxation.
Along the adjacent wall, bench seating wraps around to the front entry, where drawers provide shoe-storage by the front door. A built-in bookcase complements the overall design. A sectional with chaise hides a sleeper sofa. Multiple tables of different sizes and shapes support a variety of activities, whether catching up over coffee, playing a game of chess, or simply enjoying a good book by the fire. Custom drapery wraps around the room, and the curtains between the living room and dining room can be closed for privacy. Petite framed arm-chairs visually divide the living room from the dining room.
In the dining room, a similar arch can be found to the one in the kitchen. A built-in buffet and china cabinet have been finished in a combination of walnut and anegre woods, enriching the space with earthly color. Inspired by the client’s artwork, vibrant hues of teal, emerald, and cobalt were selected for the accessories, uniting the entire gathering space.

This view of the kitchen catches a glimpse of the dining room, and shows a pocket doorway into the adjacent game room. The hutch creates an informal divider between the kitchen and the dining space. All of these elements, from the circular island, to the chandelier over the dining table, including the doorway, and the dining table with chairs, were designed and built in our shop. Each demonstrates the capabilities and vision of a custom designer, well versed in the arts of the cabinetmaker. The creation of a custom kitchen is more than a limited concern with cabinet boxes and their layout around four walls. Great custom work flows seamlessly through adjoining areas of a home.
A knowledgeable appreciation of design traditions allows reinterpretation, and entices our creativity in new directions. Revisiting our design heritage honors those who passed before us, but need not involve slavishly retreading their paths.
Primary wood species are sycamore and shedua.
Charles Renee Macintosh was a wonderful architect who brought to homes objects and features which enriched our perspectives and our daily living. We draw upon his work for inspiration for the those few who truly appreciate the design sensitivity of this great architect. chadbourne + doss architects have designed a washroom in the historic Alderbrook Station Netshed. The exterior gapped boards are inspired by cracks of light in the netshed's historic board and batten siding that shrink and grow depending on the season.

When full-time Massachusetts residents contemplate building a second home in Telluride, Colorado the question immediately arises; does it make most sense to hire a regionally based Rocky Mountain architect or a sea level architect conveniently located for all of the rigorous collaboration required for successful bespoke home design. Determined to prove the latter true, Siemasko + Verbridge accompanied the potential client as they scoured the undulating Telluride landscape in search of the perfect house site.
The selected site’s harmonious balance of untouched meadow rising up to meet the edge of an aspen grove and the opposing 180 degree view of Wilson’s Range spoke to everyone. A plateau just beyond a fork in the meadow provided a natural flatland, requiring little excavation and yet the right amount of upland slope to capture the views. The intrinsic character of the site was only enriched by an elk trail and snake-rail fence.
Establishing the expanse of Wilson’s range would be best served by rejecting the notion of selected views, the central sweeping curve of the roof inverts a small saddle in the range with which it is perfectly aligned. The soaring wave of custom windows and the open floor plan make the relatively modest house feel sizable despite its footprint of just under 2,000 square feet. Officially a two bedroom home, the bunk room and loft allow the home to comfortably sleep ten, encouraging large gatherings of family and friends. The home is completely off the grid in response to the unique and fragile qualities of the landscape. Great care was taken to respect the regions vernacular through the use of mostly native materials and a palette derived from the terrain found at 9,820 feet above sea level.
