This arrangement created a clear courtyard near the main residence while directing the 800-square-foot guest house toward the open meadow and the distant Catskill Mountains. “The unique character of the site and its history inspired the architectural direction,” says Cawse. “The intent was to create a secondary structure in the compound in clear contrast to the modern farmhouse style of the house and garage.” A Barn-Inspired Exterior Adds Visual Flair The exterior envelope evokes a traditional barn with a simple gable shape, weathered wood siding, cedar shingles, and a foundation veneer made of local fieldstone. A large sliding barn door adds a complementary feature to the courtyard-facing side, creating a dynamic opening that maintains uninterrupted views through the cottage to the meadow beyond. Upon stepping into this master bedroom for the first time a few design issues immediately struck me. One being the bed placement against what was the original fireplace in the room. The second was the wall and area rug color and the general blandness of the yellow especially against the white of the original paneled door and window moldings. Thirdly, the general fussiness and extensive amount of stuff everywhere. There needed to a more organized way to stay on top of the day to day clutter that accumulates regularly. Photo: Ward Roberts

We were hired to transform this small apartment into a tranquil pied-a-terre. Perched atop an historic landmark, the unit features unparalleled views of Manhattan. However, the layout was awkward and the finishes dated. One of the many challenges was staying within the confines of the numerous structural columns and plumbing risers. A larger foyer was created by removing a cumbersome millwork unit. Folding glass panels open the new kitchen to the view. Two, discrete bathrooms were created from one large one. All mechanical and electrical systems were updated, and each of the windows replaced to meet stringent preservation requirements. A neutral palette for the interiors was chosen to bring a sense of calm to the urban surroundings. We were hired to transform this small apartment into a tranquil pied-a-terre. Perched atop an historic landmark, the unit features unparalleled views of Manhattan. However, the layout was awkward and the finishes dated. One of the many challenges was staying within the confines of the numerous structural columns and plumbing risers. A larger foyer was created by removing a cumbersome millwork unit. Folding glass panels open the new kitchen to the view. Two, discrete bathrooms were created from one large one. All mechanical and electrical systems were updated, and each of the windows replaced to meet stringent preservation requirements. A neutral palette for the interiors was chosen to bring a sense of calm to the urban surroundings.
