This home had the original pine plank flooring. Our Customer inquired about us refinishing them to a lighter look. We suggested going over the old with new hardwood to avoid the tremendous amount of dust created by sanding and refinishing. They were quite pleased with the end result.

In the summer of 2012 we embarked on a remodel of our 1912 Craftsman. We wanted to redo the kitchen and the upper floor which contained the master bedroom, bathroom, guest room and office. We interviewed approximately 5 other architects prior to finding Mark. We knew right away he was the right person for the job. He was patient, thorough and we could tell he truly loved our home and wanted to work with us to make it even better. His vast experience showed through during the interview process which validated his portfolio. Mark truly became a trusted advisor who would guide us through this remodel process from beginning to end. His planning was precise and he came by many times to re-measure to get every detail accounted for. He was patient and helpful as we made decisions and then changed our minds! He was with us every week of the 10 weeks of the remodel. He attended each weekly meeting with the General Contractor and was at the house numerous other times guiding and really looking out for our best interests. I came to trust him enough to ask his opinion on almost everything from layout to colors and decorating tips! He consistently threw out ideas....many of which we took. Additionally Mark was a tremendous help in referring us to contractors, designers, and retailers to help us along the way. I am ecstatic over the results of the remodel. The kitchen and bath are truly beautiful and full of modern conveniences while maintaining the integrity of the 1912 structure. This master bath layout was large, but awkward, with faux Grecian columns flanking a huge corner tub. He prefers showers; she always bathes. This traditional bath had an outdated appearance and had not worn well over time. The owners sought a more personalized and inviting space with increased functionality. The new design provides a larger shower, free-standing tub, increased storage, a window for the water-closet and a large combined walk-in closet. This contemporary spa-bath offers a dedicated space for each spouse and tremendous storage. The white dimensional tile catches your eye – is it wallpaper OR tile? You have to see it to believe!

Michael Merrill Design Studio refurbished the interior of this two level residence into something at once classic and joyful. This dark and dated 1980’s kitchen and family room area was completely transformed into a large open space. The homeowners had a lot of great ideas and we worked together as a team to completely reimagine the entire layout. Previously closed off, the kitchen is now open to the family room making it a great space for family and entertaining A massive engineered beam was installed between the kitchen and family room allowing the wall separating the kitchen and family room to be removed and allowing more natural light into the space. The laundry room located off the kitchen was relocated so that area can function as a smaller kitchen that houses a second dishwasher, small appliances, a walk-in pantry and tons of storage. We also added an exterior door so the homeowners could have easy access to their herb garden. Twin doors to this small kitchen allow this area to be easily closed off if needed. Dated built-ins were removed on either side of the fireplace and the walls were framed out on either side to bring the walls forward and to allow that cabinet space to be used in the newly relocated laundry room. Venetian plaster was used to finish the fireplace giving it a clean modern look. Wide 5 inch plank white oak floors were installed throughout which help tremendously with lightening up the entire area. The bar was updated to match the kitchen and the stained shiplap wall adds warmth and interest behind the new white cabinets. Mixing metals with brass hardware and light fixtures and beautifully stainless appliances creates a timeless look.

This Houston bathroom remodel is timeless, yet on-trend - with creative tile patterns, polished chrome and a black-and-white palette lending plenty of glamour and visual drama. "We incorporated many of the latest bathroom design trends - like the metallic finish on the claw feet of the tub; crisp, bright whites and the oversized tiles on the shower wall," says Outdoor Homescapes' interior project designer, Lisha Maxey. "But the overall look is classic and elegant and will hold up well for years to come." As you can see from the "before" pictures, this 300-square foot, long, narrow space has come a long way from its outdated, wallpaper-bordered beginnings. "The client - a Houston woman who works as a physician's assistant - had absolutely no idea what to do with her bathroom - she just knew she wanted it updated," says Outdoor Homescapes of Houston owner Wayne Franks. "Lisha did a tremendous job helping this woman find her own personal style while keeping the project enjoyable and organized." Let's start the tour with the new, updated floors. Black-and-white Carrara marble mosaic tile has replaced the old 8-inch tiles. (All the tile, by the way, came from Floor & Décor. So did the granite countertop.) The walls, meanwhile, have gone from ho-hum beige to Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. (The trim is Reflective White, also by Sherwin Williams.) Polished "Absolute Black" granite now gleams where the pink-and-gray marble countertops used to be; white vessel bowls have replaced the black undermount black sinks and the cabinets got an update with glass-and-chrome knobs and pulls (note the matching towel bars): The outdated black tub also had to go. In its place we put a doorless shower. Across from the shower sits a claw foot tub - a 66' inch Sanford cast iron model in black, with polished chrome Imperial feet. "The waincoting behind it and chandelier above it," notes Maxey, "adds an upscale, finished look and defines the tub area as a separate space." The shower wall features 6 x 18-inch tiles in a brick pattern - "White Ice" porcelain tile on top, "Absolute Black" granite on the bottom. A beautiful tile mosaic border - Bianco Carrara basketweave marble - serves as an accent ribbon between the two. Covering the shower floor - a classic white porcelain hexagon tile. Mounted above - a polished chrome European rainshower head. "As always, the client was able to look at - and make changes to - 3D renderings showing how the bathroom would look from every angle when done," says Franks. "Having that kind of control over the details has been crucial to our client satisfaction," says Franks. "And it's definitely paid off for us, in all our great reviews on Houzz and in our Best of Houzz awards for customer service." And now on to final details! Accents and décor from Restoration Hardware definitely put Maxey's designer touch on the space - the iron-and-wood French chandelier, polished chrome vanity lights and swivel mirrors definitely knocked this bathroom remodel out of the park!
