With sweeping views of the Willamette river and Mt. Hood, this Atwater Place condo was designed with a balance of minimalism and livability in mind. A complete kitchen remodel brought a dark interior kitchen to the light and a full furnishings package welcomed Los Angeles transplants home to their new modern and bright residence. Our clients, a retired camera operator for both feature films and television and a producer/production manager on numerous television series including Weeds and The Middle, relocated from their traditionally-styled LA bungalow to Portland in the Summer of 2014. The couple sought a design departure from their long-term California residence and a fresh start for their new life in the South Waterfront. With only two pieces of sentimental furniture and a handful of artwork included in the plan, we set out to create a comfortable and clean-lined furnishings package complimenting the broad southeast views. Organically shaped upholstery pieces juxtaposed with angular steel and wood tables create a soft balance in the open floor plan. Several custom pieces, including a dining table designed by our studio and a custom hand-blown glass chandelier crafted by Scott Schiesel with Lightlite compliment timeless pieces from Knoll, Herman Miller, and B&B Italia. The kitchen is designed to reflect light and create brilliance in a space that is otherwise naturally dark. A material balance of stainless steel, back painted glass, quartz composite, lacquer, and mirror all play their part in creating a vibrant cooking environment. We collectively decided to forgo the traditional island pendant for a linear commercial fixture that provides tremendous light to the prep surface and creates an unexpected architectural element. The mirrored prep island creates the illusion of open space while concealing casework and wine storage on the working side of the kitchen. It is worth noting that this project was designed and installed almost entirely while our clients were still living in LA and wrapping up professional obligations and selling their home. This afforded us the tremendous opportunity to send our clients to showrooms not available in Portland to view key pieces before final specification. Textiles and finish samples were approved via mail and communication took place over e-mail, telephone, and an occasional office visit. On April 22, 2013, MainStreet Design Build began a 6-month construction project that ended November 1, 2013 with a beautiful 655 square foot addition off the rear of this client's home. The addition included this gorgeous custom kitchen, a large mudroom with a locker for everyone in the house, a brand new laundry room and 3rd car garage. As part of the renovation, a 2nd floor closet was also converted into a full bathroom, attached to a child’s bedroom; the formal living room and dining room were opened up to one another with custom columns that coordinated with existing columns in the family room and kitchen; and the front entry stairwell received a complete re-design. This modern bathroom design in Cohasset is a striking, stylish room with a Tedd Wood Luxury Line Cabinetry Monticello door style vanity in a vibrant blue finish with black glaze that includes both open and closed storage. The cabinet finish is beautifully contrasted by an Alleanza Calacatta Bettogli polished countertop, with the sills, built in shower bench and back splash all using the same material supplied by Boston Bluestone. Atlas Hardwares Elizabeth Collection in warm brass is the perfect hardware to complement the blue cabinetry in this vibrant bathroom remodel, along with the Kate & Laurel Minuette 24 x 36 mirror in gold and Mitzi Anya wall sconces in brass. The vanity space includes two Kohler Archer undermount sinks with Grohe Atrio collection faucets. The freestanding Victoria + Albert Trivento bathtub pairs with a Grohe Atrio floor mounted tub faucet. The tub area includes a custom designed archway and recessed shelves that make this a stunning focal point in the bathroom design. The custom alcove shower enclosure includes a built in bench, corner shelves, and accent tiled niche, along with Grohe standard and handheld showerheads. The tile selections from MSI are both a practical and stylish element of this design with Dymo Stripe White 12 x 24 glossy tile on the shower walls, Bianco Dolomite Pinwheel polished tile for the niche, and Georama Grigio polished tile for the shower floor. The bathroom floor is Bianco Dolomite 12 x 24 polished tile. Every element of this bathroom design works together to create a stunning, vibrant space.

The design of this home drew upon historical styles, preserving the essentials of the original movement while updating these elements with clean lines and modern materials. Peers Homestead drew upon the American Farmhouse. The architectural design was based on several factors: orientation with views and connection to seasonal water elements, glass cubes, simplistic form and material palette, and steel accents with structure and cladding. To capture views, the floor to ceiling windows in the great room bring in the natural environment into the home and were oriented to face the Spanish Peaks. The great room’s simple gable roof and square room shape, accompanied by the large glass walls and a high ceiling, create an impressive glass cube effect. Following a contemporary trend for windows, thin-frame, aluminum clad windows were utilized for the high performance qualities as well as the aesthetic appeal. (Photos by Whitney Kamman)

The conversion of this iconic American barn into a Writer’s Studio was conceived of as a tranquil retreat with natural light and lush views to stimulate inspiration for both husband and wife. Originally used as a garage with two horse stalls, the existing stick framed structure provided a loft with ideal space and orientation for a secluded studio. Signature barn features were maintained and enhanced such as horizontal siding, trim, large barn doors, cupola, roof overhangs, and framing. New features added to compliment the contextual significance and sustainability aspect of the project were reclaimed lumber from a razed barn used as flooring, driftwood retrieved from the shores of the Hudson River used for trim, and distressing / wearing new wood finishes creating an aged look. Along with the efforts for maintaining the historic character of the barn, modern elements were also incorporated into the design to provide a more current ensemble based on its new use. Elements such a light fixtures, window configurations, plumbing fixtures and appliances were all modernized to appropriately represent the present way of life.

Spring has arrived in the Newtown Bucks County "farmhouse" kitchen. Interior Designer, Nancy Gracia coupled this stunning La Cornue Fe stove with a custom zinc hood. Bardiglio hexagonal marble complement the stainless appliances and serve as a graceful backdrop to the subway marble set in a brick pattern throughout the entire kitchen. Custom beaded inset hand brushed cabinetry is a nice contrast to the thin pine planking flooring. Unlacquered brass hardware and soapstone countertops complete the custom cabinetry. This transitional office design blends clean-lined sophistication with warm, moody character. Our clients wanted a space that exuded professionalism with a personal edge—equal parts executive function and whisky-bar ambiance. The result is a refined office with tailored details, curated materials, and an unmistakable sense of style. A custom wall of built-in wood cabinetry anchors the space, framed by a rich charcoal stone backsplash and enhanced with integrated LED cabinetry lighting that casts a subtle, dramatic glow. These modern lighting elements highlight the open shelving and glass-paneled displays, giving this functional wall the presence of a luxe gallery installation. The sleek Polanco executive desk—handcrafted from oyster-cut salvaged Mexican ash and sustainably harvested European ash burl—is a showpiece in its own right, its sculptural form and deep wood grain balancing the room’s structured lines. The tufted black leather Dylan Sofa introduces softness and texture, while gold accents and a fur throw infuse the space with layered warmth. Overhead, the Bennet Chandelier provides a statement moment with organic movement and just the right touch of glamour. From the high-contrast color palette of black, brown, and gold to the refined panel molding and bold art pieces, every element was selected to support both productivity and personal expression. The space feels as inviting as it is impressive—perfect for focused workdays, high-stakes calls, or simply enjoying a well-earned break in timeless comfort.
