Designers gave the house a wood-and-steel façade that blends traditional and industrial elements.Photography by Eric Hausman
Designers gave the house a wood-and-steel façade that blends traditional and industrial elements. This home’s noteworthy steel shipping container construction material, offers a streamlined aesthetic and industrial vibe, with sustainable attributes and strength. Recycled shipping containers are fireproof, impervious to water and stronger than traditional building materials. Inside, muscular concrete walls, burnished cedar beams and custom oak cabinetry give the living spaces definition, decorative might, and storage and seating options.
For more than 40 years, Fredman Design Group has been in the business of Interior Design. Throughout the years, we’ve built long-lasting relationships with our clients through our client-centric approach. When creating designs, our decisions depend on the personality of our clients—their dreams and their aspirations. We manifest their lifestyle by incorporating elements of design with those of our clients to create a unique environment, down to the details of the upholstery and accessories. We love it when a home feels finished and lived in, with various layers and textures.

Salvaged as part of a collection of classroom maps from the Eastern Washington Teaching University, these mid-century scroll-down maps were drawn for and distributed by one of the most trusted map, globe and chart companies in American history: Denoyer-Geppert of Chicago, IL. This inviting space, warmly-lit by a 1940's Crouse Hinds prismatic pendant, features everything you need to explore the world from the comfort of your own inner sanctum.

From this angle, the spacious walk-in shower takes center stage, framed by frameless glass that preserves sightlines and allows the beauty of the marble tile to shine. Each tile was carefully placed to create a harmonious flow, with subtle veining that adds depth and dimension.
The glass entry door, paired with chrome hardware, enhances the modern-transitional style of the space. By removing visual barriers, the design creates a feeling of openness that blends seamlessly with the rest of the bathroom.
This shower isn't just about looks — it's designed for performance. The placement of fixtures, the slope of the floor, and the waterproofing system ensure a spa-quality experience for years to come, proving that true luxury lies in the marriage of form and function.

Transform Your Home with Expert Wallpaper Installation by Windy City Painters
This dining room in Evanston, Illinois, recently underwent a stunning transformation, thanks to the team at Windy City Painters. As a trusted Chicago painter and wallpaper installer, we specialize in elevating spaces with expert craftsmanship and attention to detail. For this project, we installed bold, eclectic wallpaper on both the walls and ceiling—a design style that’s making a huge comeback in modern home décor.
The ceiling wallpaper, in particular, is the highlight of this room. This intricate pattern required careful planning and precise installation to achieve a seamless look. Ceiling wallpaper installation is one of the most challenging aspects of our work. Gravity, delicate materials, and complex patterns make it a task that only skilled professionals should tackle. Every seam, alignment, and adhesive application must be perfect, as even minor mistakes can be glaringly obvious on a ceiling. This is why hiring an experienced wallpaper installer is essential, especially when working with expensive, custom, or delicate wallpaper.
The process of wallpaper installation begins with careful surface preparation. Walls and ceilings need to be cleaned, repaired, and smoothed to ensure the wallpaper adheres properly. Next comes the meticulous measuring and cutting of wallpaper pieces, taking into account pattern repeats to ensure a flawless design flow. For ceilings, additional steps include precise alignment and support systems to keep the wallpaper in place as the adhesive sets. It’s a time-intensive process, but the results speak for themselves—creating a space that feels polished, cohesive, and unique.
Bold, busy patterns, like the one used in this dining room, are becoming increasingly popular. This eclectic style is perfect for homeowners looking to add personality and drama to their spaces. When paired with complementary furniture and décor, it creates a harmonious yet striking aesthetic. In this case, the rich blue tones, paired with natural wood accents and mid-century modern furniture, make the room feel both elegant and inviting.
At Windy City Painters, we pride ourselves on being a top Chicago painting contractor and wallpaper expert. Whether you’re looking to enhance your walls or tackle the challenge of ceiling wallpaper, our experienced team has you covered.

In the middle of a bustling city block, this outdoor transformation offers a rare breath of calm and connection.
Designed for year-round gatherings and quiet moments alike, the patio features a custom concrete fire pit, architectural fencing for privacy, and a shaded overhang that transitions the indoors seamlessly outside. Sleek seating, natural textures, and bold, linear forms echo the home's modern architecture, while landscaping softens and frames the space with intention.
Crafted by New Explode Construction—Chicago's trusted boutique builder—this space reflects our belief that luxury isn't about excess; it's about how a space makes you feel. Here, simplicity becomes sanctuary.

This space transitions from kitchen to living zone with a rhythm that feels effortless and intentional. A minimalist ribbon fireplace adds emotional warmth without cluttering the design. Beside it, the floating staircase rises like sculpture—its wood treads and matte railing continuing the material language from the kitchen.
The restraint of this design makes it feel expansive. Nothing is overstated, yet everything is considered. Light is diffused. Movement is easy. Sightlines are uninterrupted. This is a moment where architecture, interior design, and atmosphere meet—and it's quietly powerful.
There's nothing here that doesn't serve a purpose, and nothing that doesn't serve beauty. This is minimalism that lives well.

This is an organic Lime Wash done with a true lime wash product as opposed to a brick mortar or concrete that is often seen on new houses. This product can be applied as a solid coating making the surface completely white, or can be applied and "washed off" in many artistic ways, as seen here. If you hate your brick or just want something unique this is a great option!

This airy bedroom pairs the timeless warmth of polished dark hardwood floors with the soft elegance of muted wall tones. A trio of large, white-framed bay windows welcomes an abundance of natural light, offering views of lush greenery and adding architectural charm to the space.
The room’s clean lines and uncluttered design provide a versatile canvas for any style — from modern minimalism to classic elegance. Whether envisioned as a serene retreat, a home office, or a creative studio, this space combines comfort, functionality, and visual appeal in equal measure.

This brick and limestone, 6,000-square-foot residence exemplifies understated elegance. Located in the award-wining Blaine School District and within close proximity to the Southport Corridor, this is city living at its finest!
The foyer, with herringbone wood floors, leads to a dramatic, hand-milled oval staircase; an architectural element that allows sunlight to cascade down from skylights and to filter throughout the house. The floor plan has stately-proportioned rooms and includes formal Living and Dining Rooms; an expansive, eat-in, gourmet Kitchen/Great Room; four bedrooms on the second level with three additional bedrooms and a Family Room on the lower level; a Penthouse Playroom leading to a roof-top deck and green roof; and an attached, heated 3-car garage. Additional features include hardwood flooring throughout the main level and upper two floors; sophisticated architectural detailing throughout the house including coffered ceiling details, barrel and groin vaulted ceilings; painted, glazed and wood paneling; laundry rooms on the bedroom level and on the lower level; five fireplaces, including one outdoors; and HD Video, Audio and Surround Sound pre-wire distribution through the house and grounds. The home also features extensively landscaped exterior spaces, designed by Prassas Landscape Studio.
This home went under contract within 90 days during the Great Recession.

A classic marble vanity top meets the refined geometry of a polished chrome widespread faucet in this detail shot. The natural veining of the marble adds texture and depth, while the faucet's precise lines offer a modern twist on traditional styling.
The widespread configuration provides a balanced look, with handles placed at a comfortable distance for everyday use. The polished chrome finish ties into the bathroom's overall hardware palette, reinforcing visual consistency.
Set against the soft reflection in the mirror, this arrangement blends form and function — delivering elegance that's as enduring as the materials themselves.
