This is an example of a modern landscaping in Los Angeles.

This is a small in-town backyard designed to have a mid-century modern look. The stepping stones are poured concrete. The turf is artificial, as is the the green vine material in the fence panels. The slit in the white stucco wall is a spillway for a waterfall, which empties into the pond below and then recirculates. An elevated concrete patio is behind the waterfall. The original design was by Eric King but this design was modified and built by Botanica Atlanta.

Two years in the making this landscape creates a private space filled with formal gardens and ornaments. From the multilevel front entry beds, to the gardens surrounding the lawn, to the stunning rear design, the entire space is incredible. The rear terrace features a pool, outdoor kitchen, 3 levels separated by stone walls and stairs, a distant terrace at the top of a bluff that offers an unobstructed lake view, and pergola that highlights a stone statue. Inspiration for a mid-sized modern full sun backyard concrete paver landscaping in New York.

This tired, unused San Francisco backyard was transformed into a modern, low-maintenance landscape with site-appropriate plantings enhanced by raised planting beds and a lead-free artificial lawn to replace the existing water-thirsty lawn. I created two separate "rooms" to break up the long narrow yard, and specified full range blue stone for the two small patio areas, connected by a curved pattern of rectangular pavers of the same natural stone. The raised concrete rectangular planting beds were incorporated to bring more movement and interest to the landscape along with gravel bed accents alongside. Some of the existing concrete remained, and was stained with a color to compliment the natural stone. These photos were taken over a three year period.
