The three-bedroom, 2-1/2 bath custom home is primarily on two floors but features a third-story look-out containing a study and presenting panoramic views of the gorge. Large picture windows on the main living floor open the interior to notable views on two distinct axes: the westerly view presents a view of the Columbia River as it winds its way toward Portland, the northerly view frames the majestic Mt. St. Helens. The bottom-most level is a two-bedroom accessory dwelling area for extended family to be used during extended visits. A three-car garage makes space for snow removal equipment, two vehicles and a limited shop. The home features a rooftop photovoltaic array providing enough electric power to sell back to the utility district during much of the year, and a geothermal loop for heating and cooling. Fatti+inlà (Move over a bit!) is a creation by Andrea Grattaroli of Studio Kuadra and is an example of his fertile creativity. The design represents an imaginary row of birds on the ledge of a building. One of the birds, the cuckoo, pushes its way out of its house taking its place in the row. The inspiring concept is quite simple but the final result is very elegant. This clock can be hung on a wall or placed on a surface. The twenty-two wooden birds are all handmade and are aligned on two perfectly balanced wooden blocks. The twenty-third bird chirps every hour moving forward and bowing. Two very fine hands tell the time. The clock comes in two versions: black with white hands or white with black hands. It is made of wood and is varnished with non-toxic paint. The back of the clock is in metal which facilities hanging and gives a stylish finish to the whole item. The battery run cuckoo mechanism has a photosensitive sensor that automatically turns off the cuckoo sound in the absence of light. It also has a switch to regulate the volume of the cuckoo sound or to switch it off completely.

With two small children and a third on the way, the owners of an original eighteenth century Cape were quickly out-growing it, but they had no desire to move away from the Cape Cod home and location they loved. They simply needed a reconfigured layout and more space. Their goals included repurposing some existing rooms, adding a new kitchen/family area plus screen porch on the first level, and creating a master suite and roof deck with an outdoor shower on the second level, connected by a new stair. Our challenge was to improve the flow between existing spaces, and design the two-story addition without overwhelming the pint-sized original Cape. We took advantage of the lower grade at the rear of the property to step the first floor of the addition down two steps from the existing main level. This allowed us to align the second floor in the addition with the existing second floor, while gaining ceiling height in the new first-floor kitchen/family area. We composed a cross-gabled form for the addition to improve the second floor headroom, while maintaining the existing eave line. We then extended some existing shed dormers to gain headroom and enhance function. We also expanded the outdoor living area with privacy walls along the roof deck. New, larger, double–hung windows that match the lite configuration of the existing windows, along with new side-wall shingles and trim which resemble the existing exterior treatment help to tie the new addition to the old Cape. Though there’s no mistaking the new for the old, the two are simpatico.
