Our client cam to us with a gently sloping property in Baldwin Borough, on which they wanted to build a new ranch style home. During the Schematic Design Phase, we developed schemes showing different styles for the exterior. Of the European style chalet, modern farmhouse, and craftsman exteriors, the client gravitated toward the craftsman. While working through the design, we also needed to reconcile the Owner’s desire to have the house face the street, yet not look too imposing sitting on top of the hill with high roof lines, and vaulted game room. Ultimately, by rotating a portion of the plan 30 degrees, we were able to hug the contours of the site, and break the facade down into smaller vignettes. These vignettes led to a more properly scaled and pleasing result through slight variations of the wall composition .

The Tice Residences replace a run-down and aging duplex with two separate, modern, Santa Barbara homes. Although the unique creek-side site (which the client’s original home looked toward across a small ravine) proposed significant challenges, the clients were certain they wanted to live on the lush “Riviera” hillside. The challenges presented were ultimately overcome through a thorough and careful study of site conditions. With an extremely efficient use of space and strategic placement of windows and decks, privacy is maintained while affording expansive views from each home to the creek, downtown Santa Barbara and Pacific Ocean beyond. Both homes appear to have far more openness than their compact lots afford. The solution strikes a balance between enclosure and openness. Walls and landscape elements divide and protect two private domains, and are in turn, carefully penetrated to reveal views. Both homes are variations on one consistent theme: elegant composition of contemporary, “warm” materials; strong roof planes punctuated by vertical masses; and floating decks. The unique opportunity and challenge for the Joshua Tree project was to enable the architecture to prioritize views. Set in the valley between Mummy and Camelback mountains, two iconic landforms located in Paradise Valley, Arizona, this lot “has it all” regarding views. The challenge was answered with what we refer to as the desert pavilion. This highly penetrated piece of architecture carefully maintains a one-room deep composition. This allows each space to leverage the majestic mountain views. The material palette is executed in a panelized massing composition. The home, spawned from mid-century modern DNA, opens seamlessly to exterior living spaces providing for the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living. This spare but stylish set of bathroom furniture unites a clarity and cleanliness of design with ultimate practicality for the bathroom with simple needs or restricted space. Attractive contrast: The one-piece, beveled-edge countertop and built-in basin is crafted from slim white gloss ceramic, an attractive counterfoil to the dark woody base. It features a soft-edged, rectangular shape which tapers to a smaller base. The whole unit is wall-mounted, to further enhance its sheer, ‘floating’, base-less simplicity. Forest tones: It brings together a single, roomy drawer finished in sophisticated dark brown composite veneer, the dramatic contrasting wood-grain evoking the tones of the mist-shrouded mountain forest, perfectly offset by the single strip metal griff handle. A bold surface full of character inspired by the Po Plain oaks and the unmistakable language of nature. The selected shades allow Sherwood to be used in classic and contemporary spaces, panelling, and fit-outs that require stylish visual and tactile details. Our client constructed their new home on five wooded acres in Northern Virginia, and they requested our firm to help them design the ultimate backyard retreat complete with custom natural look pool as the main focal point. The pool was designed into an existing hillside, adding natural boulders and multiple waterfalls, raised spa. Next to the spa is a raised natural wood burning fire pit for those cool evenings or just a fun place for the kids to roast marshmallows. The extensive Techo-bloc Inca paver pool deck, a large custom pool house complete with bar, kitchen/grill area, lounge area with 60" flat screen TV, full audio throughout the pool house & pool area with a full bath to complete the pool area. For the back of the house, we included a custom composite waterproof deck with lounge area below, recessed lighting, ceiling fans & small outdoor grille area make this space a great place to hangout. For the man of the house, an avid golfer, a large Southwest synthetic putting green (2000 s.f.) with bunker and tee boxes keeps him on top of his game. A kids playhouse, connecting flagstone walks throughout, extensive non-deer appealing landscaping, outdoor lighting, and full irrigation fulfilled all of the client's design parameters.

Our team took this traditional ranch and overhauled it to create a contemporary dream fit for it’s young family and their elevated tastes. This project included a 300 square foot kitchen addition as well as a full remodel of the existing house. This house proves that modern does not have to feel cold. We replaced the dated windows and doors with a full wall of Jeldwen windows, as well as a huge La Cantina multi slide door for ultimate entertaining. We added contemporary frameless interior doors, white oak flooring, and custom designed walnut cabinets. We finished out the kitchen island with marble waterfall edges and a matching stone splash. The bathrooms were upgraded with a clean and neutral palette that is as durable as it is beautiful. We mixed warm wood tones and creamy tiles with contemporary matte balck and brass fixtures and lighting for a perfect mix of natural texture and refined style. On the exterior- we added smooth stucco to the traditional siding and replaced the composite roof with beautiful stainless steel standing seam. Wood accents in the garage doors and entry add warmth. The end result is a Modern Ranch that exudes clean, contemporary style without losing its Montecito ranch heritage.

Rooted within the mountain landscape, this 3,500 square foot residence seeks to balance rugged and refined architectural expression through incremental evolution. Stacked stone, taken from the site itself, composes the terraced, plinth base of the home. With each level, there is a progressive increase in the degree of refinement, light, and craftsmanship to be found - the pinnacle coinciding with the gabled peak and breathtaking view of the Carson range. In many ways, the earth acts as either the author or the inspiration for every space. At the base of the sloped site, a cavernous garage is nestled deep within the hillside. From it, a wide path of paved stone leads to the entry gallery and lounge. Ascent to the third level unfolds a quiet series of private and public spaces separated by board form concrete walls and flexible enough to be completely open to the mountain air. Evoking the memory of the client's 200-year-old mountain cabin, the blackened timber roof unifies the entire composition of concrete volumes and glass as it frames the views beyond. Ultimately, this is a residence designed to be worthy of the mountain on which it rests.
