This couple in Oakville asked Betz to do a makeover of their compact backyard, including a pool for the benefit of their grandchildren. The designers at Betz used their depth of experience to maximize the number of features they could fit into the 23’ x 45’ yard.

After dark the backyard springs to life with the array of garden lights plus the strip lights on the awning frame and the ambient light from the kitchen great room. The outdoor dining table for four is located conveniently close to the barbecue on the deck.

The generous lounge area on the deck is a wonderful place to gather in the evening. On warm clear nights it’s tempting to retract the awning, turn off the lights and enjoy stimulating conversation with friends under starlit skies.

The deck’s glass railings allow a clear view of the adjoining woodland park. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the calming sounds of nature. With the yard backing onto a conservation area, special permits were required before construction could commence.

A highlight of this Gunite pool is the 5’ x7’ spa which can be accessed from the deck or the shallow portion of the pool. When the spa is not in use it serves as a secondary water feature with water spilling quietly over the grey tile ledges back into the pool.

The 10’ x 25’ footprint of the custom Gunite pool is in pleasing balance with the other elements of the yard. An interesting feature of the pool is the 20” deep underwater bench which runs 15’ between the spa and the deep end swim out step in the corner.

The first step was to remove the existing wood deck and excavate below to create a new basement walkout. This required an engineered feature wall to support the new deck and an enclosed soundproofed room to house the pool equipment and deaden the sound.
