We were given the challenge of designing a house overlooking a pond on a site constrained by wetlands. Our client had an interest in permanence and solidity and a desire to work with architectural concrete. Additionally, the client desired interiors that would showcase their substantial art collection. Our design approach began with the footprint of an L-shaped courtyard house, which in part, was determined by the limited buildable area. The house is sited on a natural rise in the land, allowing the first floor elevation to rise 15 ft above the pond’s surface; this height provides dynamic views through the trees that separate the house from the pond. Ultimately, our design leverages the inherent capabilities of architectural concrete i.e. its structural capacity; the material allows for bold cantilevers and expanses of glass, creating greater transparency between interior and exterior environments. The interior palette is comprised of rift sawn oak with 16-inch wide oak plank flooring, oak casework and millwork, a stainless steel and glass main staircase, and minimalist concrete details throughout. On the upper level, the plan accommodates a master bedroom suite, three children’s bedrooms, and a family room. The first floor includes a guest bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room, office, and family room. The ground level has a recreational room, a mudroom, and office/studio. The site plan employs native plantings and includes a small resistance pool in the courtyard. Concrete will be utilized for all of the house’s structural and insulation components. This method modulates the fluctuation of interior temperature, creating both an energy-efficient envelope and enough concrete mass to keep temperatures moderate and consistent throughout a 24-hour day. The entire assembly was removed and we installed a Marvin double front door. Going from a builder grade, single door to the Marvin Elevate Swinging French Doors really set this house apart, creating an elegant front entry. A bronze exterior clad was chosen, while the interior wood was stained to match the home’s original trim color. Two twin casement windows and one single casement window were removed. We brought in functional cabinetry, introduced uninterrupted work surfaces, and added plenty of lighting to brighten up their kitchen. They also wanted to open the new kitchen to the living room and create space for a larger dining table, so we started by removing the existing cabinetry that was visually cut the living space in two and minimized the power of the dramatic vaulted ceiling. We also extended the wood flooring into the kitchen as well to create seamless transitions between spaces. We fell in love with the idea of a two-toned cabinetry design for this kitchen and ultimately went head over heels for clean white painted base cabinets and a textured wood-look melamine on the uppers. This gave us a crisp backdrop that allowed us to bring is fun forms like the black light fixture over the table and the gorgeous silhouettes on the hardware. We played a lot with directionality in this space. The elongated open shelves and rectangular backsplash tiles give us wonderfully clean horizontal lines, but to balance those out we brought in a vertical grain pattern on the wall cabinets and added long black cabinetry pulls that emphasize the verticality of the space. Rooted within the mountain landscape, this 3,500 square foot residence seeks to balance rugged and refined architectural expression through incremental evolution. Stacked stone, taken from the site itself, composes the terraced, plinth base of the home. With each level, there is a progressive increase in the degree of refinement, light, and craftsmanship to be found - the pinnacle coinciding with the gabled peak and breathtaking view of the Carson range. In many ways, the earth acts as either the author or the inspiration for every space. At the base of the sloped site, a cavernous garage is nestled deep within the hillside. From it, a wide path of paved stone leads to the entry gallery and lounge. Ascent to the third level unfolds a quiet series of private and public spaces separated by board form concrete walls and flexible enough to be completely open to the mountain air. Evoking the memory of the client's 200-year-old mountain cabin, the blackened timber roof unifies the entire composition of concrete volumes and glass as it frames the views beyond. Ultimately, this is a residence designed to be worthy of the mountain on which it rests.

The goal in building this home was to create an exterior esthetic that elicits memories of a Tuscan Villa on a hillside and also incorporates a modern feel to the interior. Modern aspects were achieved using an open staircase along with a 25' wide rear folding door. The addition of the folding door allows us to achieve a seamless feel between the interior and exterior of the house. Such creates a versatile entertaining area that increases the capacity to comfortably entertain guests. The outdoor living space with covered porch is another unique feature of the house. The porch has a fireplace plus heaters in the ceiling which allow one to entertain guests regardless of the temperature. The zero edge pool provides an absolutely beautiful backdrop—currently, it is the only one made in Indiana. Lastly, the master bathroom shower has a 2' x 3' shower head for the ultimate waterfall effect. This house is unique both outside and in.

This customer installed our 1x6 Premium Primed Shiplap himself using tips obtained from his Contractor, Patrick Frenking from Frenking Construction. The boards went up easily and the look compliments the salvaged steel windows well! The creative process led him down the road of oak window casements which blend well with the home's 1915 craftsman style and really round out the feel the homeowner was looking to obtain. The ultimate goal was to have a Sunroom on steroids for overall better utilization of the backyard. This homeowner is happy to now have better light for the home, and loves that the shiplap helps keep it a bit causal but also increases the "keep it interesting" factor!

This project was for a family who needed more interior living space and wanted to improve their kitchen but didn't want to lose their entire rear yard.
