The coffee bar area included open and closed shelving, drawers, a pull-out trash can for easy disposal, and temporary open lower shelving that was perfectly sized and already pre-plumbed to fit an ice maker in the future. In the original drawings, we had a wall to the right of the open shelving. Once framing had begun, we decided to eliminate the wall for a more open view, which welcomed in more natural light and created a small gathering/conversational spot. Space planning in 2D and 3D (designing the layout of the space and how areas flow) is so important to have on paper, and at the same time, there has to be a level of flexibility when being present during construction. This small shift made a huge difference. Now we couldn’t imagine the coffee bar closing in on all three sides. Off the kitchen is the large walk-in pantry. It has an appliance counter, open shelving for dry goods, plenty of lighting, and outlets to operate smaller kitchen appliances like the microwave, standing mixer, toaster, etc. The barn door saves space in a high-traffic area and adds warmth to an otherwise all-white hallway. The pantry is also in close proximity to the garage, which allows for short trips from the car when unloading.

Inspiration for a transitional home bar remodel in Los Angeles

Taragano Design & Build completed this modern kitchen remodel in San Ramon, California. The ceiling set up everything else. Opening to the roof structure and adding skylights brought daylight onto the work surfaces instead of relying on fixtures, which changes how a kitchen feels at four in the afternoon far more than any finish selection does. Prep and cleanup live on the island. The sink faces into the room, so whoever is working there is part of what is happening rather than turned toward a wall. Cooking sits on the perimeter run with the cooktop under a dedicated hood, keeping heat and steam away from the seating area and letting two people work without crossing each other. The refrigerator anchors the end of that run, so unloading groceries never cuts through the prep zone. Wall ovens are stacked outside the main path of travel. Beverage service was pulled out of the kitchen entirely and given its own wall, with undercounter storage and a tall wine refrigerator, so guests can serve themselves without stepping into the cooking area.
