InnovationLandThis Houston outdoor kitchen and entertaining area offers a modern take on Mediterranean style.
Designed and built by Outdoor Homescapes of Houston, this fully loaded family and entertaining space echoes the stucco, travertine tile patio and Mediterranean style of the existing home while exuding a more modern, transitional style.
“This was a high-profile client – both VPs of different oil and gas companies who entertain affluent guests on a regular basis – so they wanted to make sure they had high-end appliances and all the latest amenities they could order,” says Lisha Maxey, senior designer for Outdoor Homescapes and owner of LGH Design Services in Houston. “They also have two kids, ages 7 and 10, and wanted a family gathering space that better accompanied their new, luxurious pool.”
What really sets apart this outside kitchen design idea, however, is the way the elements are used throughout the space.
“Usually, outdoor kitchen designs for a backyard are grouped into one island or cabinet,” explains Outdoor Homescapes of Houston owner Wayne Franks. “But here, the patio, roof and fireplace were all in place, separated by stucco columns, and the outdoor kitchen elements had to work around them.”
A 14-foot-long cooking island houses a built-in Fire Magic grill with a Magic View Window (allows the chef to check on food without lifting the lid and losing valuable heat). The island, the countertop of which is "Carnaval" granite from Lackstone, also features a Fire Magic power burner, warming drawer and trash drawer. On one side of the fireplace, forming an “L” with the cooking island, sits a built-in Primo ceramic grill.
On the other side of the fireplace is a 3-foot-long cabinet housing a bar with a wine cooler, ice maker and upper cabinet. And finally, just outside the patio door is a 7-foot-long cabinet with a modern Kohler sink with a high-arc Moen faucet (sink and faucet from Faucets Direct), a trash drawer and another upper cabinet.
Outdoor Homescapes of Houston, by the way, outfitted both cabinets with glass inserts, custom pulls and three-way sensor lighting.
“At the beginning, this was basically a blank space with a fireplace in the middle,” says Maxey. So Outdoor Homescapes upgraded the fireplace with Austin Stack Stone in white (No. 401) from Colorstonescreenshot vickers mosaic tile rectangle. "The stone added that pop,” notes Maxey.
The fireplace’s espresso-colored, distressed wood mantel (from Mantels.com) and upper wood cabinets were both stained with the Minwax color Jacobean. The ceiling fans were also updated with ones featuring similarly espresso-colored, wooden fan blades, to match.
The table in the middle - a cast-iron, Mediterranean style gem with hand-forged scrollwork designs from Patio 1 in Houston – seats 10.
“We wanted this kind of Mediterranean feel,” says Maxey. “We wanted rustic, but the appliance package was so new, with all its stainless steel, so we kept a the cabinets and the columns stucco instead of stone for a more clean, modern look and then did the custom tile backsplash and mosaic in more of a rustic, Mediterranean look."
The backsplash is a 1-inch travertine tile background with 4-inch square metallic insets, both from Floor & Decor. The tile for the 18-by-24-inch rectangle mosaic came from Great Britain Tile Co. and included a Dianno Reale tumbled border and background. The bronze, diamond-shaped insets are tumbled Dark Emperdor tile and the scrolls are tumbled Noce tile.
The client, who admits they have high standards, was more than pleased with the project – especially browsing through Outdoor Homescapes’ vast library of patio kitchen design ideas, the 3D virtual video tour that let them preview the project from every angle before construction. They also liked the personalized design consultation.

Metro InteriorsBefore, this family room had a lot of “little things” distracting the eye. We simplified things and created a fresh new design that’s decluttered, cohesive, and designed with the family in mind.
The room had a lot of wood detail – on the ceiling and the wall. We had it painted an off-white, Benjamin Moore’s “Cake Batter” to lighten things up and make the room feel more spacious. The ceiling beams are seen has harsh, oppressive energy in Feng Shui, so it was especially important to minimize their impact. We did that by matching the ceiling color with the beam color. On the rest of the walls we went with another neutral, a soft earth tone to add some warmth.
For the windows we chose new treatments that are still vertical, because that function was important to the family, but with a unique texture on the blinds to add some interest.
The new carpet is nice and soft, and we found a new leather sectional to anchor the room. It’s larger, and has an updated style, with a configuration that wraps around. It was specifically chosen for its durability as well, since this is where the family spends a lot of time – it can withstand spills and regular wear and tear. A contemporary and practical floor lamp was also added alongside the sofa for additional lighting.
The cocktail table is a great piece the homeowners previously had, which we encouraged them to keep. We knew it would work well in the design, and look brand new with the finished room’s color scheme and furniture. It was in such nice shape, and also durable; plus the size worked in perfect balance paired with the sofa in the room. We changed things up on the surface with creative accents that coordinate with the design and add some new life.
With the grouping of art on the wall before, it was hard to know what to focus on. The new piece of artwork, which we found on a trip to an art gallery, is sculptural and fun. The size also helps to create balance in the room, and its contemporary look and color effortlessly complete the room.

One special feature of the kitchen is the beverage pantry. It was something the homeowner had seen online and wanted to make practical. Because pull outdoors would have been in the way, we went with slide-in, fold-out doors like what you would see in an entertainment center.
The other unique feature of the kitchen is the center island. The blue was chosen to match the color theme of the connecting living room. The solid wood countertop is a striking centerpiece that steals the show. The cooktop was moved to the island, but because the homeowner did not want a bulky range hood hanging from the ceiling, we had to get creative with a downdraft range vent and a fan mounted on the outside of the house to pull the air out.
Another interesting aspect to the cooktop is that we had originally recommended an induction cooktop instead of regular electric cooktop. The reason being that an induction cooktop cools instantly the moment the pot is removed whereas an electric cooktop stays hot but with no visual cue to warn you. The homeowner initially decided to go with the less expensive electric cooktop. But, before we had even finished construction, one of the family members slid their hand over the cooktop while walking by just after a pan had been removed and got burned. Immediately the homeowner requested we install the induction cooktop instead.

Made a trip to the tile shop and it was smooth sailing after selections were finalized.
The tub is the first thing you see and used by the owners on a regular basis. We made it a special feature with a cascading waterfall on a slate tile backdrop.

Massey Design GroupWe tailored this major kitchen update to meet the needs of our client for whom regularly gathering her adult children and their families for home cooked meals is a tradition hailing from her southern heritage. The Wolf range, Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer, commercial grade range hood and strategically placed prep sink were designed to support her love of cooking and large scale meal preparation. By replacing a smaller island and peninsula with an expansive sixteen foot island we greatly increased both the storage and the seating capacity, providing plenty of space for family and friends to comfortably gather in this true heart of the home. Other must haves like the built in coffee maker, dedicated wine refrigerators and bar area, and a built in buffet niche for storing several dish collections make this a modern kitchen with traditional roots that is ideal for entertaining and relaxing.

Phoenix Home RemodelingEdith’s guest bathroom was showing its age and the lack of storage. She started to notice that the shower walls and tub were not allowing her to utilize the bathroom the way she wanted to.
The dated fixtures, shower head and sink faucet were not functioning the way they once were. The tub was not allowing for easy entry and wasn’t really being used.
Her desires were to create a current, modern, and brighter bathroom with a pop of color. We used a 12x24 shower wall tile called Cemento Rasato Bianco and laid it in a horizontal 3rd offset pattern.
We also took the tile to the ceiling to allow the transition around the window to look more natural. The shower pan is a light grey.
We increased the storage space in a large niche. That pop of color mosaic is called Coastal Keytones in a sea blue color mix.
The niche tile and wall color coordinate with each other to bounce lighting around the room.
We updated the vanity to a drawer unit to help Edith organize the products she uses on a regular basis. By having drawers, she will never have the endless cavity where unused product gets lost or forgotten.
The plumbing fixtures are in the brushed nickel family. The faucet is the Delta Sandover and the shower head is the Delta In2uition. This shower head features 9 different shower sprays, from a mist to a jet stream to meet the needs of her showering experience. The large mirror and dated lighting fixture were replaced by a stylish large round mirror and LED compatible light fixture.
DNB RenovationsThis full-scale gut renovation reimagined the entire home with a balance of luxury and practicality. We installed new black-framed windows throughout, integrated advanced blind and security systems, and incorporated custom glasswork to enhance light and visual continuity. Comprehensive electrical upgrades supported a layered lighting plan — from statement chandeliers to recessed and task lighting — while thoughtful paint finishes and detailed millwork tied the home together with a cohesive, high-end feel. The kitchen was fully remodeled around the family’s needs, and the bathrooms were completely redesigned, including plumbing modifications to accommodate both showers and freestanding tub options. Custom stone slabs were used throughout for a modern, luxurious aesthetic, and we added purpose-built spaces like a fully designed pantry and bespoke cabinetry to ensure every area performs as beautifully as it looks. While the clients were away during construction, we maintained full transparency through regular schedule and photo updates via our project management platforms.

Within an existing nook, we created a multi-purpose zone with convenient coffee prep space, wine decanting and buffet serving surface, and even custom storage for baking sheets and trays … perfect for baking cookies with the grandchildren! Custom push-out casement windows behind the sink speak to the home’s original architecture while bringing in an abundance of natural light. The original kitchen felt too small for the space which features stunning vaults and timber frame beams. With a complete overhaul, the newly redesigned space now gives justice to the impressive architecture. A combination of rustic and industrial selections have given this home a brand new vibe, and now this modern cabin is a showstopper once again!

TroicoThis Coquitlam home in the Harbour View area got a complete kitchen update, including our premiere Boulevard Collection Cabinetry. The perimeter cabinets are Troico White and the Island is a custom painted light grey which brings out the country feel in the room.
The sink is a white porcelain apron sink and the La Cornue Stove, from Williams-Sonoma, showcases the custom-built hood fan and cabinetry on either side.
Crown moulding was carried throughout the room and custom paneling was installed, separating the eating area from the living room. A custom hutch was also built and placed in the eating area to allow for extra storage. The end of the hutch was designed to be a computer desk. This allows for the hub of the home to be in the kitchen.
Matching laundry room and powder room cabinets were installed to match the kitchen cabinetry.
All the cabinetry installed in the home was built with furniture kicks. This gives the cabinetry a furniture feel, rather than regular recessed kicks.
