We approached this new build as a seamless, full-service collaboration between architecture and interiors. Every decision—structural, spatial, and aesthetic—was shaped with intention, not to mention collaboration, since our contractor was also our client. Our contractor said, “make the rooflines simple and direct the water away.” His wife said, “I like color.” Check, and check. The bold exterior lines of the home both contrast with and recede into the woods around it, and the interiors are layered with cheerful hues, custom details, and playful patterns. Each room carries its own moment of cheer, while the overall palette ties together into a cohesive, uplifting whole, not unlike its namesake rainbow.

This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. Another ta dah moment when we completed this master suite. It is now representing an uplifting, sophisticated casualness to the space. See all the pics to follow of this room. You should know behind those White filmy curtains behind the bed is a view of a few tree leaves but mostly a view of a very busy Venice Blvd. So we hid it a bit this way. Also White rods were used with bronze rings and finials that coordinate with the pre existing ceiling fan and we added them to the bed frame as well.

Bedroom of a new construction single-level home in Orinda, CA. Landkamer Art / Avenida Triptych 007 • This series began in a more sparse mode as shown in this piece and was primarily inspired by the swaying California coastal kelp forests. There’s a blog post about that on my site. But an additional layer of meaning was on my mind—a frightening incident when very young where I was pushed off a Minnesota lake dock and needed to be pulled out of the lake quickly as I could not swim. This series references both inspiration moments into one positive healing work. There is the beauty and power of the swaying ocean kelp linked to the turbulence and fright of being knocked into the lake and looking up to the water’s surface from below. Unintentionally the result is uplifting beauty and abundant positive energy for me. Like three frames from a film, the triptych panels communicate with each other.
