Space-saving Stairs have been used widely in Europe for many years and now have become quite popular in the US with the rise of the Tiny House movement. A further boost has been given to the Space-saving staircase with many of the major building codes in the US allowing them. Here's the stair we designed and built for a client who wanted a super-slim, non-intrusive way to access their loft. It's built at the code maximum pitch of 70 degrees and has a 102" overall rise. The build code defines an alternating-tread stair as "A device that has a series of steps between 50 and 70 degrees from level... in an alternating manner so that the user does not have both feet on the same level at the same time." So just think with me; That's how we normally climb stairs isn't it? When we climb a conventional stair, we use half of the step at a time. So the idea of an alternating-tread stair is to save a huge amount of floor space by placing the treads in the position where we would normally place our foot as we climb the staircase. Inspiration for a mid-sized transitional light wood floor entryway remodel in DC Metro with beige walls and a white front door

This over 100 year old home has some great features that the homeowner wanted to keep and improve on to keep the feel of the 1899 home, but still modernize it to today's comforts. A 600 square foot addition was added to the back of the home, enlarging the kitchen and master suite. Engineered hardwood floors were added throughout the home, distressed and custom colored stained beams were added to this period home. The stairs were completely redone with wood and white painted accents. Upstairs has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and an open study. The soft patterned carpet is throughout the upper level and compliments the neutral tones in the home. A metal chandelier hangs over the stairs to add more light.

This 1960's home needed a little love to bring it into the new century while retaining the traditional charm of the house and entertaining the maximalist taste of the homeowners. Mixing bold colors and fun patterns were not only welcome but a requirement, so this home got a fun makeover in almost every room! Original brick floors laid in a herringbone pattern had to be retained and were a great element to design around. They were stripped, washed, stained, and sealed. Wainscot paneling covers the bottom portion of the walls, while the upper is covered in an eye-catching wallpaper from Eijffinger's Pip Studio 3 collection. The opening to the kitchen was enlarged to create a more open space, but still keeping the lines defined between the two rooms. New exterior doors and windows halved the number of mullions and increased visibility to the back yard. A fun pink chandelier chosen by the homeowner brings the room to life.

An original 1930’s English Tudor with only 2 bedrooms and 1 bath spanning about 1730 sq.ft. was purchased by a family with 2 amazing young kids, we saw the potential of this property to become a wonderful nest for the family to grow. The plan was to reach a 2550 sq. ft. home with 4 bedroom and 4 baths spanning over 2 stories. With continuation of the exiting architectural style of the existing home. A large 1000sq. ft. addition was constructed at the back portion of the house to include the expended master bedroom and a second-floor guest suite with a large observation balcony overlooking the mountains of Angeles Forest. An L shape staircase leading to the upstairs creates a moment of modern art with an all white walls and ceilings of this vaulted space act as a picture frame for a tall window facing the northern mountains almost as a live landscape painting that changes throughout the different times of day. Tall high sloped roof created an amazing, vaulted space in the guest suite with 4 uniquely designed windows extruding out with separate gable roof above. The downstairs bedroom boasts 9’ ceilings, extremely tall windows to enjoy the greenery of the backyard, vertical wood paneling on the walls add a warmth that is not seen very often in today’s new build. The master bathroom has a showcase 42sq. walk-in shower with its own private south facing window to illuminate the space with natural morning light. A larger format wood siding was using for the vanity backsplash wall and a private water closet for privacy. In the interior reconfiguration and remodel portion of the project the area serving as a family room was transformed to an additional bedroom with a private bath, a laundry room and hallway. The old bathroom was divided with a wall and a pocket door into a powder room the leads to a tub room. The biggest change was the kitchen area, as befitting to the 1930’s the dining room, kitchen, utility room and laundry room were all compartmentalized and enclosed. We eliminated all these partitions and walls to create a large open kitchen area that is completely open to the vaulted dining room. This way the natural light the washes the kitchen in the morning and the rays of sun that hit the dining room in the afternoon can be shared by the two areas. The opening to the living room remained only at 8’ to keep a division of space.

This fantastic home needed a new take on the traditional staircase to match the home’s modern design aesthetic. Blank and Cables installed a continuous handrail consisting of hand rubbed bronze and a “floating” glass guardrail to evenly disperse light and add modern appeal to the classic architecture style found in this San Francisco home.
