Olamar InteriorsThese Northern Virginia residents have owned this vacation home for about ten years. With retirement imminent, they decided to give the entire home an over-haul. With it’s great bones and amazing location, this seemed like a very sound investment for their future. Paola McDonald from Olamar Interiors had been working with the clients for the past three years, helping them to renovate their Sterling, VA condominium and their Moorefield, WV weekend home. It seemed fitting that they would also hire her to help them renovate this home as well.
For this project we took the home down to the studs and practically rebuilt it. The renovation includes an addition to the basement level and main floor to create a new fitness room, additional guest bedroom and larger kitchen and dining area. It also included a renovation of the facade of the home. The exterior of the home was completely re-sided and painted, and we added the tall windows at the stairs. The lower entry deck was expanded and an upper deck was added just off the kitchen in order for the homeowner to keep his grill away from the strong ocean winds. A new deck was also added off of the master bedroom. New stainless steel railings were added to all the decks. We opened the homes stairwells, adding custom glass railings and new lighting to create a much more open feel and allow for natural light to flood the entire main living area. The original, tiny kitchen was expanded substantially, adding a large custom eat in bar, wine storage area and plenty of storage. We utilized Decora’s Marquis Cabinetry in an espresso finish to give the kitchen a very clean, contemporary feel. Carrara marble countertops paired with a grey quartz, single slap marble backsplash, and stainless appliances create a clean look. In the new dining area, a simple Modloft dining table was paired with a Regina Andrew bubbles chandelier and Jessica Charles dining chairs for a sophisticated feel accentuated perfectly by beachy colors and textures that tie in the beautiful views of the Ocean. A custom chandelier from John Pomp is the highlight of the family room, particularly at night when it is reminiscent to fireflies in the sky. A new custom designed, custom made sectional, cozy newly added Spark Modern Fires gas fireplace, custom rug by Julie Dasher and Lee Industries chairs create a cozy place to lounge and watch television after a long day at the beach. Guests feel like they are in a luxurious boutique hotel complete with spectacular views, comfortable Ann Gish linens and beautiful and unique lighting fixtures. All three full baths and the powder room received complete facelifts with new glass, marble and ceramic tiles, Decora cabinetry, new lighting fixtures, quartz countertops and unique features that make unique statements in each one. Phillip Jeffries mica wallpaper are used in the entryway and family room fireplace walls to add a sandy texture to each space. Phillip Jeffries grasscloth was added to the master bedroom accent wall to create a delicate feature. New flooring throughout includes gorgeous dark stained hardwood floors, ceramic tile and Karastan carpeting in the bedrooms. The crisp white and grey walls are accentuated throughout the home by beach inspired turquoises, navies and lime greens. Perfectly appointed furnishings, artwork, accessories and custom made window treatments complete the look and feel of this gorgeous vacation home.

The master bedroom includes a deep tray ceiling detail, and bedroom #3 has vaulted ceilings and a plant shelf above the closet. The master suite has a very spacious closet, a garden tub and separate shower, linen storage in the master bath, and other luxury bath options. The dining room is defined by columns and a dropped tray ceiling, but remains otherwise open to the other living areas. A butler's pantry off the kitchen and formal dining room adds a nice luxury touch, as does a bay window in the breakfast area. A nicely-sized utility/mudroom combination includes a built-in folding counter. Several front elevations are available, all with the plan's signature high hip roof and a variety of feature window and porch designs.

Riverside Construction, LLCRiverside started by moving the location of the refrigerator and converting a sliding glass patio door to a single door. This allowed the space needed to extend the kitchen footprint into an eat-in nook area. Unable to tear down the wall where the old fridge and a small closet were located, we utilized the space to maximize storage. A brand new bank of upper and lower Wellborn Select Style cabinets was designed into the space, along with a large center island that provided additional seating and storage options.

It features a warm blend of pebble mosaics on the floor, providing a soothing, earthy feel. The walls were adorned with Pietra Italia Beige tiles in a 12" x 24" format, laid in a ⅓ offset pattern for a subtle, engaging visual texture.
An over sized recessed wall niche was added, utilizing the same elegant beige and white tones of the Pietra Italia tile, enhancing the shower's practicality and visual appeal.

This project was done in 1994 as a major remodel and minor addition to a 1970's two story single gable box style house with bevel siding. The main challange was to get the living room to take avantage of the great view looking to the south and east as well as an exterior living space, which was not utilized in the existing house. Also the plan was all chopped up into small spaces and all bathrooms were re-arranged and replaced on suite.
Revival HouseOur Revival House designer was asked to transform this dated condo living area into a highly functional kitchen, buffet, and dry bar that reflects the homeowners' eclectic taste. To accomplish this, our designer chose distinctly industrial fixtures and hardware but mixed in three different door styles, an array of colors, hardware styles, finishes, and countertops with a nod to the eclectic. This is not your average kitchen, and it is stunning.
This space incorporates three different cabinet finishes on three distinct door styles by Decor. The kitchen perimeter and buffet cabinetry employ a custom door style with an added detail to elevate the look. The dry bar and island utilize a timeless, Shaker-style door. The light cabinets in Willow paint and Mist stain on clear alder and the dark tone of Black Fox paint effortlessly define the to areas within the space - one for meal prep and one for entertainment. Every design decision and choice of material was purposeful in creating this unique kitchen space.
The kitchen cabinetry is adorned with an elegant, polished Cambria Quartz in Inverness Frost, contrasted with the edgy, honed Ebony Granite from the Artisan Group for the buffet and dry bar. The thoughtful mix of cabinet hardware, using Bradbury pulls in Warm Brass by Atlas and several styles from Top Knobs' Aspen collection in Silicon Bronze Light, works together to add the perfect amount of warmth, shine, and aged-industrial appearance to this stunning eclectic kitchen. The brief from our clients was to amalgamate an annex and original house building to create one practical family home. It was important the annex did not feel like an add-on, but rather as part of the original property.
The Solution
The design solution is to feature a series of new openings between the two buildings to provide subtle connections and routes between spaces throughout the house.
The whole footprint was utilised and spaces were carefully arranged to maximise light and provide a more functional family home. Glass doors with steel frames were used in the hallway to open up sight-lines to the large rear garden and provide flexibility to the use of the space.
The dining room features a hidden door into a secret lounge space that plays on the idea of there previously being a sense of separation. The Kitchen was made bespoke by Higham Furniture, a supplier we have worked with many times before and who are in our supplier directory.
All the original external walls and ground floor construction have been insulated to exceed building regulation standards, creating a highly sustainable building. This is great for our clients carbon footprint and for keeping their running costs low.
Externally, corner glazed full height sliding doors were added to provide a seamless transition between the lounge and garden. At roof level, a series of dormers were added to the master suite that help draw breathtaking views towards the London skyline.
The rear garden was landscaped by Patios, Pots and Pergolas.

Olamar InteriorsThese Northern Virginia residents have owned this vacation home for about ten years. With retirement imminent, they decided to give the entire home an over-haul. With it’s great bones and amazing location, this seemed like a very sound investment for their future. Paola McDonald from Olamar Interiors had been working with the clients for the past three years, helping them to renovate their Sterling, VA condominium and their Moorefield, WV weekend home. It seemed fitting that they would also hire her to help them renovate this home as well.
For this project we took the home down to the studs and practically rebuilt it. The renovation includes an addition to the basement level and main floor to create a new fitness room, additional guest bedroom and larger kitchen and dining area. It also included a renovation of the facade of the home. The exterior of the home was completely re-sided and painted, and we added the tall windows at the stairs. The lower entry deck was expanded and an upper deck was added just off the kitchen in order for the homeowner to keep his grill away from the strong ocean winds. A new deck was also added off of the master bedroom. New stainless steel railings were added to all the decks. We opened the homes stairwells, adding custom glass railings and new lighting to create a much more open feel and allow for natural light to flood the entire main living area. The original, tiny kitchen was expanded substantially, adding a large custom eat in bar, wine storage area and plenty of storage. We utilized Decora’s Marquis Cabinetry in an espresso finish to give the kitchen a very clean, contemporary feel. Carrara marble countertops paired with a grey quartz, single slap marble backsplash, and stainless appliances create a clean look. In the new dining area, a simple Modloft dining table was paired with a Regina Andrew bubbles chandelier and Jessica Charles dining chairs for a sophisticated feel accentuated perfectly by beachy colors and textures that tie in the beautiful views of the Ocean. A custom chandelier from John Pomp is the highlight of the family room, particularly at night when it is reminiscent to fireflies in the sky. A new custom designed, custom made sectional, cozy newly added Spark Modern Fires gas fireplace, custom rug by Julie Dasher and Lee Industries chairs create a cozy place to lounge and watch television after a long day at the beach. Guests feel like they are in a luxurious boutique hotel complete with spectacular views, comfortable Ann Gish linens and beautiful and unique lighting fixtures. All three full baths and the powder room received complete facelifts with new glass, marble and ceramic tiles, Decora cabinetry, new lighting fixtures, quartz countertops and unique features that make unique statements in each one. Phillip Jeffries mica wallpaper are used in the entryway and family room fireplace walls to add a sandy texture to each space. Phillip Jeffries grasscloth was added to the master bedroom accent wall to create a delicate feature. New flooring throughout includes gorgeous dark stained hardwood floors, ceramic tile and Karastan carpeting in the bedrooms. The crisp white and grey walls are accentuated throughout the home by beach inspired turquoises, navies and lime greens. Perfectly appointed furnishings, artwork, accessories and custom made window treatments complete the look and feel of this gorgeous vacation home.

Skill Construction & Design, LLCVienna Addition Skill Construction & Design, LLC, Design/Build a two-story addition to include remodeling the kitchen and connecting to the adjoining rooms, creating a great room for this family of four. After removing the side office and back patio, it was replaced with a great room connected to the newly renovated kitchen with an eating area that doubles as a homework area for the children. There was plenty of space left over for a walk-in pantry, powder room, and office/craft room. The second story design was for an Adult’s Only oasis; this was designed for the parents to have a permitted Staycation. This space includes a Grand Master bedroom with three walk-in closets, and a sitting area, with plenty of room for a king size bed. This room was not been completed until we brought the outdoors in; this was created with the three big picture windows allowing the parents to look out at their Zen Patio. The Master Bathroom includes a double size jet tub, his & her walk-in shower, and his & her double vanity with plenty of storage and two hideaway hampers. The exterior was created to bring a modern craftsman style feel, these rich architectural details are displayed around the windows with simple geometric lines and symmetry throughout. Craftsman style is an extension of its natural surroundings. This addition is a reflection of indigenous wood and stone sturdy, defined structure with clean yet prominent lines and exterior details, while utilizing low-maintenance, high-performance materials. We love the artisan style of intricate details and the use of natural materials of this Vienna, VA addition. We especially loved working with the family to Design & Build a space that meets their family’s needs as they grow.
McCabe By Design LLCAn unattractive dysfunctional kitchen has been transformed into a hub for frequent family gatherings. Wall cabinets used to hang from the ceiling where the far right sky light is now cutting the kitchen off from the family room. Isle ways were tight and unsafe. The large new island allowed for more storage, more prep area and a means for concealing the existing water, waste and electrical utilities.
The island size and shape nicely shows off the beautiful veining in the granite countertop.
The prep sink makes for a good hand washing and flooring arrange station while the larger sink can be devoted to meal prep and clean up.
RWH Architect PLLCSet among mature pine and willow trees, the Bow Bog Road Residence transforms a once-neglected property into a refined modern home that feels inseparable from its natural setting. The original structure was removed while the existing foundation was preserved, presenting a unique design challenge: how to create a contemporary residence that respected the site’s constraints while maximizing light, views, and connection to the surrounding landscape.
RWH Architects designed a modern post-and-beam home with a carefully integrated addition that expands the livable footprint while maintaining a modest, single-story profile. The home’s form follows the contours of the land, appearing grounded and intentional—almost as if it has always existed within the wooded setting.
Inside, exposed timber beams and tongue-and-groove ceilings bring warmth and craftsmanship to the open living spaces. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and clerestory glazing flood the interior with natural light while framing views of the ever-changing New England foliage. A dramatic stone fireplace anchors the great room, creating a sense of permanence and balance between natural materials and modern design.
The home is thoughtfully arranged for both comfort and flexibility, featuring a primary suite, guest suite, and two additional bedrooms. A sunroom serves as a transitional space between indoors and out, seamlessly connecting the living areas to the surrounding landscape. The custom kitchen introduces a darker wood palette, offering a rich contrast to the lighter finishes used throughout the home.
Sustainability was a core consideration in the design. The residence operates fully off-grid, utilizing geothermal heating and cooling, solar power, a private septic system, and a 1,000-foot well—delivering modern amenities while minimizing environmental impact.
