Designed by London-based architecture firm Alma-nac, the property, which is called the Split House, replaces a 1950’s bungalow and run-down barn in the village of Fairlight, on the southern coast of England. The owners wanted to create a highly sustainable home which took advantage of its hilltop location. As a result, architect firm Alma-nac designed the property to extend out in three different directions, providing stunning views of the sea and nearby Dungeness headland. The architects specified Accoya to construct the external windows, window reveals and doors for the stylish property. 38 Accoya fixed and opening windows were installed, as well as 22 glazed door leafs. The doors and windows will require little maintenance over their lifetime due to the process in which the wood is made. The acetylation process, which is used to toughen the wood, delivers outstanding levels of performance, stability and durability. Caspar Rodgers from Alma-nac commented: “We chose Accoya because we wanted to build using eco-friendly materials that could withstand the variable weather conditions that are characteristic of England’s southern coast. Located in the Houston Heights, the Waverly Residence is a modern home on an established street of two story homes boasting front porch typologies. The family’s desire for privacy resulted in a porch that rotates to internalize most of its function while still addressing the street. For this active family, yard activity and it’s visibility from within the home emerged as a priority for approaching the building’s relationship to the lot. Justifying the building mass to the Northern half of the site reinforces the scale of the design to the surrounding buildings and creates a large southern yard dedicated to play and brisket (is a Texas house a house without a barbeque?). The ground floor is clad in metal panel and a wood rainscreen that peels away from the structure to become both a fence and an entry threshold, blending the registration between the yard's privacy enclosure and the building skin. Variable width fiber-cement siding clads the second floor as a nod to the neighborhood vernacular. The pool and outdoor kitchen sit at the center of the yard, forming an island that divides the open play from private vehicular access at the alley. Shifted volumes delineate private space from the open public areas. The second floor extends over the public entryway to create a covered procession with cascading steps into the southern yard that traverses the length of the living spaces. The public program expands beyond the building enclosure to encompass the yard and living spaces. A horizontal shift in the ground floor volume produces both a private courtyard away from the lively public spaces and exterior delineation between private vehicular access and public entry. Within the open, ground floor plan, a change in elevation indicates the boundary between private and public space. Custom millwork provides ample storage for the young family. Playful patterns of enclosed storage with contrasting display boxes creates a cohesive millwork language throughout the home.

Built in 1893, this cottage home in Snohomish, WA has survived many changes including the addition of a 1400 sq. ft. basement that was hand dug. While the former owners did a fantastic job with concrete and structural supports, the framing, electrical and plumbing are….well, questionable. Phase 1 of this basement renovation includes the complete modernization of the existing bathroom. Future plans include a kitchenette and laundry room and demolition of existing walls to create an open dining room concept to allow more natural light to flow into the otherwise dark space. The new Ejector Pump Up Systems has a macerator to handle grey water and sewage including the addition of a new kitchenette and laundry room. When we opened the walls we discovered numerous electrical and plumbing issues including leaks behind the walls that where not yet detectable. At the same time, the existing gas heating system is being removed and replaced with a high efficient heat pump with Variable Refrigerant Temperature (VRT) technology. The underground plumbing is complete, the electrical has been cleaned up and its time to start putting this back together. Up next is a Wedi waterproof shower surround and heated tile floors, a new water closet and custom vanity. It’s a big job in a small space but the finished product will be clean, warm and inviting.

Bio wood is a completely chemical free wood flooring made from European larch and crafted in Italy. This wood species is known for its beautiful elongated and dimensional grain. Bio wood is vapor treated, the planks are placed in sealed basins that emit a steam composed of water and other natural elements creating a natural sealer on the finished surface. This vapor treatment and drying creates an extremely durable, non-permeable finish. These planks have a hand-sawn surface, and due to the nature of the finishing system each plank is subtly different. This collection is a variable width floor and contains three different plank widths. *These planks are completely chemical free and certified for use in bio buildings.

Award winning contemporary bathroom for the 2018 Design Awards by Westchester Home Magazine, this master bath project was a collaboration between Scott Hirshson, AIA of Hirshson ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN and Rita Garces, Senior Designer of Bilotta Kitchens of NY. The client had two primary objectives. First and foremost, they wanted a calm, serene environment, balancing clean lines with quiet stone and soft colored cabinets. The design team opted for a washed oak, wood-like laminate in a flat panel with a horizontal grain, a softer palette than plain white yet still just as bright. Secondly, since they have always used the bathtub every day, the most important selection was the soaking tub and positioning it to maximize space and view to the surrounding trees. With the windows surrounding the tub, the peacefulness of the outside really envelops you in to further the spa-like environment. For the sinks and faucetry the team opted for the Sigma Collection from Klaffs. They decided on a brushed finish to not overpower the soft, matte finish of the cabinetry. For the hardware from Du Verre, they selected a dark finish to complement the black iron window frames (which is repeated throughout the house) and then continued that color in the decorative lighting fixtures.
