The Kushners wanted to turn their dysfunctional backyard into an outdoor living space. Landsystems Landscapes developed their yard into four distinctive areas. A dining area, a hang out spot with a fire pit, a Bocci Ball court, and a space for a vegetable garden. The Kushners wanted low maintenance, so we made sure to plant drought tolerant shrubs, and lay down easy to manage hardscaping.

In order to avoid having safety railings around the deck, we added a mid-level vegetable garden halfway between the playing field and the deck. Photos-Chris Jacobson, GardenArt Group

Edibles are added thru the landscape in places where the sun is right. Of course, the color, texture and every other attribute of the plant must look good.

These custom raised beds are made out of red wood to match the houses siding. This area receives all day sun and is a perfect location for a vegetable garden. They sit atop an earth block retaining wall above the pool. The beds flank both sides of a decomposed granite path. The height and depth of are set for easy access.

After living with the original 1980s landscaping for a few years after purchasing their home, these homeowners were ready for an update. We preserved mature plantings where possible, but integrated new material to better suit the homeowners' style and the Northwest setting.
The rural location made deer fencing critical for the vegetable garden. The homeowners commissioned the gate from a local metal artist.

Net Zero Energy Pocket Neighborhood
An urban community of 5 townhouses and 1 loft surrounding a courtyard, this pocket neighborhood is designed to encourage community interaction. The siting of homes maximizes light, energy and construction efficiency while balancing privacy and orientation to the community. Floor plans accommodate aging in place. Ankeny Row is constructed to the Passive House standard and aims to be net-zero energy use. Shared amenities include a community room, a courtyard, a garden shed, and bike parking/workshop.

Summer Street House Remodel in Ojai is a small, three bedroom house tucked away in a quiet corner near downtown Ojai. Two unassuming, white farmhouse cottages are centered around a courtyard with two small cabins in the back. The first cottage contains the living room, dining room, kitchen and a powder room. Connected by a gravel courtyard and stone walkway, the second cottage contains the bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry room. All four structures on the property have recently undergone a full renovation completed in early 2021. The central courtyard has a custom made dining table under a canopy of mature olives and flanked by a stone fire pit.
