Shingle Style Overlooking the Beach
The site is a prominent one, on a corner lot overlooking the popular Pear Tree Point beach, so privacy was key to designing a comfortable residence for this young family: a home that provided private yard-spaces while retaining lovely water views. A Shingle-Style house with front, side and upper porches and interior spaces that invite leisure was a natural choice for this beachside site.
By designing a series of outbuildings – a pool house with guest quarters, a garage and shed – that parallel the road, the pool and backyard entertaining spaces are nicely secluded. Separating the spaces transforms this 5,900 square-foot residence into an intimate and informal home. The buildings are of varying visual textures; the main house is clad in cedar shingle while the vertical board-and-batten of the 900 square-foot garage evokes a barn. The 730 square-foot pool/guest house, constructed of thin ashlar stone layup, matches the stone used throughout the project.

The homeowner selected a horizontal channel rustic profile on the lower section and a vertical shiplap to the upper level to provide a nice character to his home.
AquaFir™ is one of Montana Timber Products' chemical free, kiln dried, alternative milled rough stock wood products.
As an ideal reclaimed lumber alternative, the aesthetically pleasing rustic barn wood AquaFir™ is the result of a environmentally safe texturizing and colorizing process.
Offering uncompromising natural, rustic beauty, AquaFir™ is typically less expensive than antique reclaimed barnwood.
roy-frontThe homeowner selected a horizontal channel rustic profile on the lower section and a vertical shiplap to the upper level to provide a nice character to his home.
Wire Brushed and Circle Sawn are Montana Timber Products typical texturizing options.
Circle Sawn texture seen on Montana Timber Products natural wood siding is created by large circular saw blades used in more traditional milling practices.
Added physical and aesthetic depth to the wood grain is available as the Wire Brushed option.
Greater surface area is added during the texturizing process, allowing Seal-Once, 100% NO VOC waterfproofer to more effectively penetrate the wood.
Seal-Once is guaranteed for ten years from water ingress and is safe for exterior and interior use, pets and children.
roy-garageWire brush channel rustic siding and dark grey trim provides a slight contrast in color and character.
If environmentally friendly and the renewable aspect of natural wood siding is important to you, be sure to do your homework when choosing your siding, flooring, interior accents, trim, beams, timbers, or other wood siding products. Some companies choose to use degenerative chemicals to achieve the desired look and texture of rustic wood siding. This is not the case with Montana Timber Products.
Vintage wood, reclaimed barn wood and reclaimed barn wood alternatives are very popular building materials due to their aesthetic beauty, traditional look, and chemical free finish.

The original small 2 bedroom dwelling was deconstructed piece by piece, with every element recycled/re-used. The larger, newly built home + studio uses much less energy than the original. In fact, the home and office combined are net zero (the home’s blower door test came in at Passive House levels, though certification was not procured). The transformed home boasts a better functioning layout, increased square footage, and bold accent colors to boot. The multiple level patios book-end the home’s front and rear facades. The added outdoor living with the nearly 13’ sliding doors allows ample natural light into the home. The transom windows create an increased openness with the floor to ceiling glazing. The larger tilt-turn windows throughout the home provide ventilation and open views for the 3-level contemporary home. In addition, the larger overhangs provide increased passive thermal protection from the scattered sunny days. The conglomeration of exterior materials is diverse and playful with dark stained wood, concrete, natural wood finish, and teal horizontal siding. A fearless selection of a bright orange window brings a bold accent to the street-side composition. These elements combined create a dynamic modern design to the inclusive Portland backdrop.

Addition is an In-Law suite that can double as a pool house or guest suite. Massing, details and materials match the existing home to make the addition look like it was always here. New cedar siding and accents help to update the facade of the existing home.
The addition was designed to seamlessly marry with the existing house and provide a covered entertaining area off the pool deck and covered spa.
