Lawn replaced with colorful plants such as Orange Sedge, Phormiium, Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark', and Rubus ground cover, along with and contemporary pavers that create a welcoming front entrance in Bel Marin Keys, Novato. The landscape design transformed the tired, water thirsty-lawn into a contemporary setting with dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's entrance. And a new driveway design featuring large concrete slabs and small black pebbles set in a permeable resin in between. A variety of low-water plants for sun and part shade complete this project front yard transformation. Installed in February 2014. The back areas of this transformation is featured in a separate project: Modern Water-Side Landscape Remodel .

I love to use long blooming low maintenance perennials and annuals in my landscapes. The color combinations in this landscape are vibrant and simply gorgeous.

Situated in old Palo Alto, CA, this historic 1905 Craftsman style home now has a stunning landscape to match its custom hand-crafted interior. Our firm had a blank slate with the landscape, and carved out a number of spaces that this young and vibrant family could use for gathering, entertaining, dining, gardening and general relaxation. Mature screen planting, colorful perennials, citrus trees, ornamental grasses, and lots of depth and texture are found throughout the many planting beds. In effort to conserve water, the main open spaces were covered with a foot friendly, decorative gravel. Giving the family a great space for large gatherings, all while saving water.

New construction home designed and built by Hartman Baldwin. The landscape is extensive and was a collaborative effort between HB and NC Design. We created a beautiful drought tolerant landscape that blended in well with the surrounding hillsides. To ensure a healthy, vibrant environment for years to come, many colorful succulents, grasses, yuccas and flowering low-water perennials were used throughout the property, along with non-fruiting Olive trees and Palo Verde.

Elfin Thyme is a perfect ground cover between pavers. This California, Spanish-style bungalow gets a fresh new landscape and garden design that replaces the tired lawn with a creeping thyme ground cover and other low-water plantings. The new flagstone pathway, and a small patio echo the terra-cotta tones of the house and are softened by Elfin Thyme planted between the pavers. Colorful pottery and a Fermob Sixties Low Armchair complete the remodel. Design and Photos: © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

With views of Nantucket Sound and Sampson’s Island, this Oyster Harbors property holds colorful gardens for summer enjoyment. A large kitchen garden surrounded by apple trees provides a bountiful selection of herbs for the home cook. In the adjacent gardens, vegetables, lime and lemon trees, and tropical plants are mixed amongst vibrant perennials and pear and apple trees.

The cobblestone driveway was designed and installed by Neel Reid during the period of his ownership of Mimosa Hall.
The 9-acre Mimosa Hall, built circa 1840, is a landmark of neoclassical design with extensive gardens in the vibrant historic district of Roswell, Georgia, 20 miles north of Atlanta. The 6,000-square-foot temple-style home has heart-of-pine floors throughout, a black-and-white marble hall, soaring ceilings, and 10 fireplaces. Famed architect Neel Reid made Mimosa his home in the 1920s, creating a double parlor and designing a long fieldstone driveway and courtyard. The gardens include century-old trees, imposing boxwood hedges, rare specimen trees, stone walls, paths, parterres, a swimming pool, and a 19th Century grist mill refashioned into a barn. In addition, 21 acres of adjoining woods are for sale, one of the few remaining tracts of developable land of its size within walking distance of Roswell’s old town square.

Lagoon-side property in the Bel Marin Keys, Novato, CA. Entertaining and enjoying the views were a primary design goal for this project. The project includes a large camaru deck with built-in seating. The concrete steps and pavers lead down to the water's edge. I included a sunken patio on one side and a beautiful Buddha statue on the other, surrounded by succulents and other low-water, contemporary plantings. I also used Dymondia ground cover to create a natural pathways within the garden.
This project was just completed. More photos will be included in Spring when the plantings fill in.
