With rooms that are sixteen feet wide with occasional bay window-like extensions, the building is long and narrow to capture views in all directions and to be able to live mostly on the ground. There are deep overhanging porches wherever there are larger areas of glass. The major rooms of the house, living room and dining room, are taller barn-like volumes. The building is elevated 28" on a rough gray/black slate stone base laid up in long random horizontal lengths with walls above clad in horizontal cedar siding. The cedar shingle roof, cedar posts and roof overhangs are all finished in a light gray weathering stain, which resembles the lighter gray tones of weathered cedar and fir. The underside of the sloped porch roofs, invisible from beyond the building, are tinted with a minimal wipe of clear white stain to match the interior ceilings. Lead coated copper, which weathers in a short time to a chalky dull gray similar to the stain color, is used to clad vulnerable trim, to transition at inside and outside corners as well as roof edges and gutters, smaller windows under minimal overhangs and extensions above the roof, such as chimneys and flues. Window frames that are protected by deep porch roofs are hardwood wiped with a transparent black stain. Interior floors and porches are a smooth cut of the same gray/black slate in 16" squares. The landscape is intended to extend the ground to enhance the connection of the rooms to the exterior and the views beyond. The exception to this the great square north green which is to be a sort of hard lawn suitable for grandchildren to plan on and which is intentionally synthetic as a way of distinguishing it from the more “natural” landscape.

The design is focused on de-stigmatization and normalization of HIV testing and treatment. It provides access to a state-of-the-art facility in a beleaguered post-apartheid community. The design is a model for sustainable development that begins with environment and extends to the preservation of life. Funded globally and operated locally, Ubuntu reflects a world defined by unprecedented global connection and the resurgence of local, community based organization. Ubuntu center brings state of the art services to vulnerable children by providing centrally located, free and accessible social services in a single facility. It comprises a multi-purpose hall for education, concerts and shelter when needed; an empowerment wing with career guidance and computer centre, and a fully equipped Pediatric HIV /TB testing and counseling clinic with 47,691 people reached through community HIV prevention outreach. Ubuntu’s organic rooftop garden, together with Ubuntu’s neighborhood gardens feed 2,245 students daily. It provides a timely and practical template for sustainability on a societal as well as an environmental level. Ubuntu has been adopted by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (PEPFAR), and has become a model of success for the Clinton Global initiative, the Kresge foundation, and countless individual supporters.

Native foliage and a Madrone Tree now fill steel raised beds that once held herbs and veggies. As with the Western Redbuds in front, this petite, low growing tree adds needed shade and a vertical ember blocker. Established tree canopy is well maintained and does not connect to the roof or the siding of the office. The vine against the office is a recognized vulnerability. At ground level, it's foliage is uplifted from ground level and the bed is mulched with ember resistant gravel to reduce chances of its ignition.

BEFORE PHOTOS - The fences were rusted to the core as a result of sprinklers hitting them day after day and exposure to the elements. The rusted fences had become both unsightly and unsafe, as they were more vulnerable to being breached by intruders.

While all exterior building materials are susceptible to expansion and contraction due to climatic changes, concrete and stucco are particularly vulnerable.

A Sand Ceremony is a symbol of the union of two individuals, their unique strength, vulnerabilities, histories and families. This sand ceremony box, named Homok Sabbia, was a very special wedding gift for a Hungarian woman and her Italian fiancé. It represents the uniting of their origins, cultures and languages as they combined sand (Homok) from her home garden in Hungary and sand (Sabbia) from the seaside in Italy, during their wedding ceremony. The most beautiful and striking section of the heart wood was selected to create the box; an area with a grain structure that radiated up and out from the bottom, similar to a bouquet of vibrant flowers. The base was created with the natural edge of the walnut sap wood, or new growth, which has a different color and grain structure than the heart wood, the oldest growth. While cut from the same slap of Claro walnut, the two different sections, the base and the box, have their own unique beauty and striking features. The richness of the dark wood and intricate grain patterns were balanced with the addition of pure and striking white Carrara marble from Italy. The central marble heart was hand cut, sanded, polished and then secured in the heart shaped space that had been gently carved out of the glass front. A marble vein was inserted in the base and the narrow lid was also carved out of marble to harmoniously bring the whole piece together. When it arrived in Hungary, the bride to-be wrote us ““It’s sooooo beautiful! Perfect! I’m so happy, I like it more than I imagined!”

The patio, which runs the full length of the yard, is durable acid etched concrete which has the look of limestone but without natural stone’s vulnerability for staining. This client from Highgate in North London, N6 contacted us about their large honed Limestone tiled floor that was installed throughout the ground floor. It had been laid seven years prior and was now grubby and in need of a deep clean and seal including the grout which had turned black with dirt. I visited the property to survey and assess what was required and provided the owner with a quotation for the renovation. The hallway pictured was in the worst condition, it was a busy house with young children and dogs and over the years the sealer had worn down leaving it vulnerable to ingrained dirt. Without a sealer to protect the stone it had become heavily soiled and lost its original polished appearance. Happy with the quote we scheduled a date for the work to go ahead. The quote included deep cleaning and burnishing the stone to bring back the polish, grout cleaning and re-sealing the Limestone to protect it. We arrived on the first day and prepared the area by taping up the skirting and woodwork to protect them from potential splashing. Next step was to burnish the floor using a set of Tile Doctor Diamond Burnishing Pads, specifically the 400, 800 and 1500 grit pads fitted to a rotary machine, these were used in sequence running each pad over the tiles several times with water to lubricate the process. The water turns into a fine slurry as pores in the stone are opened and the dirt is released, the slurry is rinsed off with more water and extracted using an industrial wet vacuum after each pad. The finer 800 and 1500-grit pads slowly close the pores and refine the appearance of the stone building up the polish in the process. A strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean was then applied to the grout lines, leaving it for a short while to soak in and then hand scrubbing with a grout brush. The dirty cleaning solution and were then removed from the floor with the wet vacuum. This process was repeated across the different sections of the Limestone floor until I was satisfied with its appearance. Before leaving for the day, I rinsed the floor again using a buffing machine fitted with a brush fitted to give it a final clean. The floor was dried as much as possible using the wet vacuum and then allowed it to dry off fully overnight. The following day the final 3000-grit pad in the four-pad set was applied to the floor to bring up the polish even further. The pad is applied dry with only a little water sprayed onto the tile. We call this process a “Spray Burnish” and as well as leaving the floor nice and dry ready for sealing it adds a nice subtle shine to the stone. The floor was then sealed with two coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow sealer. This is a colour intensifying impregnating sealer that works by occupying the pores in the stone so dirt cannot become ingrained there. It will provide durable protection and make the floor much easier to keep clean. It worked well on the pale Limestone and beautifully enhanced the colour and features in stone. Once complete the floor looked brand new again. I left a complimentary bottle of Tile Doctor Stone Soap with the client and gave them some information about how best to maintain the floor. This product is pH neutral and cleans whilst maintaining the patina on the stone helping to keep the floor in great condition.
