A small but cozy stone covered outdoor pool patio and wall fountain by Ancient Surfaces. A seating area overlooks a lovely small pool fountain covered with our antique Arcane Limestone surrounded by a lovely flower trough walled in by a basket weaved teak wood ivy wall. At the front end of the pool stands a gorgeous hand carved antique limestone wall fountain that is hundreds of years old.

Bathroom - transitional bathroom idea in Portland

We converted an underused back yard into a modern outdoor living space. The decking is ipe hardwood, the fence is stained cedar, and a stained concrete fountain adds privacy and atmosphere at the dining area. Photos copyright Laurie Black Photography.

Since the house has a view of Puget Sound, we created a dramatic, water inspired Powder room. Sandwiched between a stairwell and exterior wall, the only option to update this narrow space was to replace materials & plumbing. By installing a wall hung toilet and shallow wall hung vanity, we were able to make this narrow space feel larger. Using white modern sleek plumbing we were able to use dark accent colors to create a soothing space. Touched off with cascading amber glass lighting giving warmth to the cool palette.

It’s all in the details. I had such fun designing this courtyard off the Teen Lounge and basement passage at my Waters Edge Project. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to do something different and quirky with the 4m high wall. It is a water feature with wood tile backdrop and a trough below with uplights and that recycles the water via a pump. Just having the wood tiles wall was not enough and so I had an artist sculpture these lady divers for me so that they look like they are jumping out of the water feature. When I presented this idea to my client she loved it and so we ran with it. It is definitely a conversation piece and in real life they look so cute. Wooden cladding on the side wall adds another texture (remember I am all about layering and textures) and adds warmth to this small basement courtyard. This courtyard allows so much natural light into the basement that when you are down there it doesn’t feel like you’re under ground. I chose a soft sea foam colour for the pots and the plants inside them are beautiful faux succulents and bamboo that always looks good year round. Paving slabs with stones in between finish off this courtyard. The tranquil sound of the water running can be heard from anywhere in the basement area as well as in the first floor, and it’s very calming and relaxing. You look down onto this courtyard from the first floor passage, a bedroom and the study.

The cantilevered double sink vanity is clad entirely in Corian providing a water-proof surface on four sides. The mirror-clad wall conceals the toilet area that also enjoys stunning lake and forest views.

The pool area, enclosed on all sides, creates an island so the owner’s small dogs can run freely throughout the large perimeter yard without worry. Proper drainage is assured with rainwater collecting in a central trough of polished black marble river rock, or in the troughs of river cobble and decorative grasses along the fences. It’s all beautifully low maintenance!
