Knowing we wanted to maximize the amount of light and keep the Scandinavian feel, lots of white and blonde woods were used. 6” wide wire-brushed white oak flooring was installed. Farrow & Ball No.2001 Strong White was used on all walls, ceiling and trim. The existing brick fireplace was painted in No.2001 as well to create subtle texture. All interior & exterior doors were then painted out in Farrow & Ball No.31 Railings for a deep inky blue black contrast. The kitchen cabinetry is a combination of natural quarter sawn white oak and matte lacquer maple all done in Astro’s House Brand cabinetry. Simple matte black square knobs complete with back-plate create a crisp graphic quality to warm bright kitchen. The counters are a combination of Caesarstone 1141 Pure White quartz created the low maintenance hardworking surface needed for a young family. Along the stove wall a subtle backsplash was installed. The marble mosaic from Montreal’s very own MUD Tile (sold exclusively via Astro), was used to create depth, elongated hexagon Rock Salt mosaic nods toward the Scandinavian arts and crafts movement. A simple drywall hood fan was used against the mosaic. The fan was painted out in Farrow & Ball’s No.269 Cabbage White to pull the pastel green out of the mosaic.

THEME A passion for sports that never grows up, never grows old and never tires is at the heart of this room. Designed as a den/office for a radio sports talent who’s life work revolves around stats, scores, free agents and athletes, the room ensures that its owner is surrounded by the teams and games he loves, with room for storage, a desk, a computer station and some personal accents. FOCUS Four baseball stadium seats procured from the old Tiger Stadium in Detroit, repainted with a faux wood grain look and personalized with each member of the family’s name give the room a true sports feel. Favorite team jerseys as well as team logos — painted tan to match the overall look of the room — highlight the space. Large wall towers divide the room into three distinct spaces. The central area houses two TV monitors and a hidden computer system, while the other two areas display oversized family photos in sepia tone prints and custom, matching frames. The towers, which provide storage, were purchased at Pottery Barn, and already in the room. To make them more functional, height was added to bring them to the ceiling, and the room’s crown molding is taken around each tower’s top to create a seamless flow. STORAGE The creation of the towers gives the room plenty of useful storage, including display areas, multiple shelves, and a place to hide computer accessories and office supplies. GROWTH The room can easily change over time as new sports memorabilia and family photos are added or switched out. SAFETY All wires for the monitors and computer system are hidden within the wall and inside the storage towers. Power running to digital frames dedicated to particular teams is hidden within the walls.

Dark honed granite tops the island with rustic alder cabinets. Upper cabinets float above the dual-level island that houses the stove and commercial grade ice maker. To give a clean look, the granite continues as a backsplash with outlets located only under the cabinets. The upper cabinets are suspended from the ceiling, which had to be reinforced, by steel pipes that also conceal wiring for the LED under cabinet and in cabinet lighting and under cabinet receptacle power strips. Custom glass shelves and doors in the upper cabinets help to define the dining area from the kitchen while allowing light to filter through. The opposite island contains the sink, dishwasher and an in cabinet microwave drawer. The oversize granite top extends past the cabinets, allowing for casual seating adjacent to the Great Room. Both islands are faced with pre-cast stone that repeats the natural elements of the exterior. Exposed beams with historic warehouse flooring is utilized as the kitchen/dining room ceiling and also the 2nd floor loft/bedroom/bathroom flooring. Since both sides are visible, all planks on the underside had to be individually sanded and hand finished before hidden deck fastener installation. Utilizing the same material as the ceiling, a chase was constructed to allow sub contractors to supply electric, ventilation and the sound system. Cable lighting provides a minimalist look without obstructing any views.

DOWNLOAD NOW   This charming little attic bath was an infrequently used guest bath located on the 3rd floor right above the master bath that we were also remodeling. The beautiful original leaded glass windows open to a view of the park and small lake across the street. A vintage claw foot tub sat directly below the window. This is where the charm ended though as everything was sorely in need of updating. From the pieced-together wall cladding to the exposed electrical wiring and old galvanized plumbing, it was in definite need of a gut job. Plus the hardwood flooring leaked into the bathroom below which was priority one to fix. Once we gutted the space, we got to rebuilding the room. We wanted to keep the cottage-y charm, so we started with simple white herringbone marble tile on the floor and clad all the walls with soft white shiplap paneling. A new clawfoot tub/shower under the original window was added. Next, to allow for a larger vanity with more storage, we moved the toilet over and eliminated a mish mash of storage pieces. We discovered that with separate hot/cold supplies that were the only thing available for a claw foot tub with a shower kit, building codes require a pressure balance valve to prevent scalding, so we had to install a remote valve. We learn something new on every job! There is a view to the park across the street through the home’s original custom shuttered windows. Can’t you just smell the fresh air? We found a vintage dresser and had it lacquered in high gloss black and converted it into a vanity. The clawfoot tub was also painted black. Brass lighting, plumbing and hardware details add warmth to the room, which feels right at home in the attic of this traditional home.
