Located on the second level, Franklin's home office graciously overlooks the front entrance via a massive arched window. The key to successfully transforming the design of the barn into a home, according to Franklin, was to scale windows and doors according to the massive volume that existed. "The majority of windows are 4'x8' in size, and main-level doorways are eight feet tall", he says. Franklin runs his firm, Franklin & Associates, from his office on the main level. Being in plain view of the stairwell calls for a quick means of concealing the trappings of the workday. A formal dining room was proving to be wasted space in this young family’s home. After some discussion, we thought up all of the other ways they would like to use this space and made a room that could do it all. So, we made a dining room that doubles as a game room with soft upholstered chairs ready for cards, triples as a space to catch up on news with your morning coffee, and quadruples as a spot for that old fashioned at the end of the workday. The days of single-use rooms are over!

We honored the building’s history where possible, keeping original bones and character wherever possible, then layered in the clients’ distinct creative identity. On the main floor, we designed spaces that shift seamlessly from workday to reception-ready. Lighting was planned with intention, to preserve the original plaster ceilings and spotlight rotating installations without sacrificing ambient warmth. Custom built-ins maximize functionality while maintaining a distinctly un-officey feel. Upstairs, the artist apartment is a thoughtful retreat: adaptable, light-filled, and comfortable, with just enough quirk to spark inspiration. Even the basement—home to a full photography studio and workroom—balances technical needs with aesthetic ease. Throughout, we used color, texture, and collected pieces to ensure each room feels curated, not staged. Personal, not polished.

Now their favorite spot in the house, the living room evokes a fresh, easy feeling. "The former decor was too dated and fussy," admits Sherri. Knowing what they were after, but unsure of how to get there, the couple enlisted the help of interior designer Ingrid Porter. Pulling from the existing palette in the dining room makes this update a natural progression in the grand scheme of the home. Keeping some pieces, such as John's mother's rocker, was essential. Porter had the chair reupholstered to reflect the new feeling of the space. "With a lot of demands during the workday, they both needed a space that was quiet and calm to refuel their minds," explains the designer. This home had a backyard patio that was cracked and unappealing. The homeowner wanted a place to entertain and escape after a hectic workday. The expansive paver patio has a seating wall around a fire pit at one end and a pergola on the other. There is a built in barbecue with mini fridge near the kitchen door. The plantings have color year round and thrive in the heavy shade from the existing mature trees.
