2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY FINALIST AWARD WINNER This 1970’s split-level single-family home in an upscale Arlington neighborhood had been neglected for years. With his surrounding neighbors all doing major exterior and interior remodeling, however, the owner decided it was time to renovate his property as well. After several consultation meetings with the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, he settled on an exterior layout to create an Art & Craft design for the home. It all got started by excavating the front and left side of the house and attaching a wrap-around stone porch. Key design attributes include a black metal roof, large tapered columns, blue and grey random style flag stone, beaded stain ceiling paneling and an octagonal seating area on the left side of this porch. The front porch has a wide stairway and another set of stairs leads to the back yard. All exterior walls of the home were modified with new headers to allow much larger custom-made windows, new front doors garage doors, and French side and back doors. A custom-designed mahogany front door with leaded glass provides more light and offers a wider entrance into the home’s living area. Design challenges included removing the entire face of the home and then adding new insulation, Tyvek and Hardiplank siding. The use of high-efficiency low-e windows makes the home air tight. The Arts & Crafts design touches include the front gable over the front porch, the prairie-style grill pattern on the windows and doors, the use of tapered columns sitting over stone columns and the leaded glass front door. Decorative exterior lighting provides the finishing touches to this look. Inside, custom woodwork, crown molding, custom glass cabinets and interior pillars carry the design. Upon entering the space, visitors face a large partition that separates the living area from a gourmet Arts & Crafts kitchen and dining room. The home’s signature space, the kitchen offers contrasting dark and light cherry cabinets. Wide plank hard wood floors, exotic granite counters and stainless steel professional-grade appliances make this a kitchen fit for any chef.

My design solutions included a contemporary redwood horizontal fence to help screen the view of the hillside along with arbors for vines that help to break up the long narrow space. I designed a triangular-shaped pergola with decorative panels from "Parasoleil" that serves as an artful focal point while providing interesting shade patterns that casts its delightful shadow along fence and patio and bench below, changing its position as the sun moves throughout the day. The landscape design includes angular planting beds, concrete pavers surrounded by gravel and a small lower-water lawn for the family to enjoy. The gentleman of the home agreed to a pool on one condition, it must be the very best that money can buy. Consequently, Betz recommended a 13’ x 26’ Lautner edge perimeter overflow pool, which was set perfectly flush with the deck to create the appearance of a sheet of glass. Full width walk-in steps extend the minimal look.

We added our glass art into this lighting scene so the client could peer from the kitchen window nearby. Our glassware changes, in this case we chose a wine bottle look.

While these homeowners' 1966 Asian-inspired rancher was built for entertaining, the backyard wasn't living up to its potential. A combination of crumbling composite and wood decks wasn't functional and had become an eyesore, so they were replaced with an expanded single-level PVC deck. A new paver patio features a sunken fire pit and inset bench rocks, providing further space for entertaining. Additionally, a paver path wraps around the existing retaining wall and ramps up to the deck, providing a barrier-free entry to the house that will enable the homeowners to age in place.

David Kopfmann, of Yardscapes Inc., designed this outdoor living space for a home that was in the Artisan Home Tour by Parade of Homes this spring, 2015. Some items that we installed were a custom concrete spa, paver patio, stone retaining walls, and an outdoor kitchen. David also included custom art and custom metal furniture that he designed and fabricated.

Fleur-de-Lis Wind Sculpture - fabricated from copper and steel. Each kinetic Wind Sculpture is secured against theft and rests on a sealed ball bearing at the top of a vertical rod. Sculptures also come with a steel ground mount receptacle for simple installation. Dimensions: 5' 9" H x 2' 7" W.

As a result, it received the name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. When it releases its tail, Ragnarök will begin. Jörmungandr's arch-enemy is the thunder-god, Thor.
