Joe Palimeno has always been inspired by the work of Landscape Architect Robert Royston, a pioneering modernist who helped define landscape architecture in the early 1940s. Palimeno has said about past designs, “it has always been the driving force in my design work, to create functional and usable outdoor spaces, whether in a backyard garden or a regional use plan. The goal is the creation of delight, joy and serenity for the people who inhabit the space.”
In this backyard, where crisp, clean lines run across the lawn to meet a vertical raw wood structure, a space is defined to offer serenity and relaxation.

The inspiration was a Thai inspired retreat that offered comfortable lounging outdoors. The suspended outdoor bed displays an asian aesthetic while giving the lounger a zen floating sensation. This Hardscape offers great entertaining with outdoor lounging around a beautiful custom fire pit and a custom built-in barbecue kitchen.

Inspired by another mid-century modern home the client owned, this new residence represents a much larger 21st-century version built into the gently sloping hillside to take advantage of the sprawling hilltop views of the Sonoma valley. The quiet front facade leads guests into a formal entry that divides the house into private and public spaces. Rounding the corner into the great room, one is immediately hit by the breathtaking view that extends outward beyond the infinity pool and deck through a continuous wall of glass. In the opposite direction, each of the three bedrooms was designed with its own seating area and bathroom, creating private suites for family members and guests alike.
The linear design and open, flowing living spaces provide almost every room with outdoor access to the expansive patio, protected from the Sonoma heat by deep overhangs. Warm woods, clean lines, and a rhythmic post and beam ceiling design create a homey feeling of rest and relaxation, evoking the essence of modern California living.

This fantastic room with a tiger wood ceiling and ipe columns has two built in heaters in the ceiling to take the chill off while watching football on a crisp fall afternoon or dining at night. In the first picture you can see the gas fire feature built into the round circular blue stone area of the deck. A perfect gathering place under the stars. With a recently updated kitchen, these clients had big plans in mind on how to connect their interior living space to the exterior. They wanted a seamless transition that was low maintenance, stylish and large enough to host a party. They got all of that and more! The tiered PVC deck designed to look like exotic wood is flanked with built-in containers, modern cable railings, raised garden beds and a bluestone walkway for driveway access. The clients are thrilled with the new space and how well it integrates with their home.

The Zen Garden Pool Deck is part of a five year project to build Prana Del Mar, a retreat and wellness center located in a remote region on the Pacific Coast of Baja, Mexico.
Set in the breathtaking beauty of the Pacific Ocean on one side, and the desert mountains on the other, the project was entirely off the grid, requiring the use of high efficiency lighting, photo voltaics, and solar hot water system, all integrated with one another.
In 2015 it was named as one of the top six yoga retreat centers in North America.
The layout of the pool and its elements was inspired by the seeming random, yet harmoniously balanced proportions of a Japanese Zen garden. We utilized the Golden Rectangle proportioning systems, circles and arcs to bring balance to the predominantly rectangular structure of the adjacent community building.
We also created axial relationships between the adjacent building and the elements on the pool deck. For example, the stairs off the south west entrance to the pool deck and the pool stairs themselves are aligned with the interior stairs of the circulation tower. The sauna inside the Community building is aligned with the wet deck and the spa, while the outdoor shower is aligned with the changing rooms in one direction and the lap pool in the other direction. There is always a focal point of a statue or planter at the end of the circulation corridors, drawing the people from one place to the next. Black river stones set in the surface continue the Zen garden feel, while generous planters throughout bring the plants of the desert into the hardscaped pool deck.

The inspiration for this Glebe kitchen was the white washed interiors synonymous with Scandinavian design. Planning the spaces of the kitchen was something that was broken into 5 key areas; cooking station, cleaning area, coffee bar, place for casual family dining and lastly a nook to sit with a great book that was still integrated in the kitchen.
